So the snow guns did their job. Lower mountain skiing suprisingly well. Good to get out and build up some leg for when the snow arrives and see the winter tribe. I also put a real aggressive Edge on my ski and am liking it!

Heh. No! it is the largest ski area in the world. Has decent freeride terrain as I've heard. Never been. Surprisingly under the radar as it somehow does not cater to the core crowd. Map glancing on my side a few years ago showed nice terrain, but i rarely got down that far in the last few years so I've never tested.Quote:

They don't get as much snow as other places. Needs huge storms from the West. Can handle warmth. The upcoming christmas dump should be perfect for it.

Here is how to activate the layers. And you can see most of the area.
So about 12-15km as the crow flies north to south length. And about 6- 8 wide.
So about 70 square kilometers of terrain. That's about a bazillion acres of skiable terrain.

It's huge, lifts going everywhere you wont need to tour. I've not been for a good few years but you'll figure it out easy enough. As for a guide Snoworks will be running something in Meribel that week. I've done guided groups with them in the past. Had some good skiingQuote:

we skied on sunday some okay-ish snow with crusts inside on very Hansi Hinterseer meadows. found lots of alpenrosen and gave them a new sun exposure while turning. official bulletin said level 1, above 2000m 2. but it felt like 3. guess it was just not enough snow. looks like more skigaudi here.

Regarding route selection, obviously look at the avalanche forecast and take decisions accordingly.
Route wise, there are good ski from lift options with a hike (col de Fruit, vallon de Lou). All marked on fatmap. Lou in particular will hold cold powder for a long time after the last snowfall if you are willing to hike the ridgeline for a while.
Lot of good options from the top of la Masse down into the Lou valley and the vallon des Encombres. Also straight back down as well.
Touring wise, the Gebroulaz is nice. Good options down to Pralognan and also over the col de Borgne. Needs glacier gear. Caution re skiing in the nature reserve. Check the map carefully.
In bad weather the trees from Tougnete down towards Meribel offer good tree skiing.
All marked on fatmap. All are potentially dangerous in poor avalanche conditions and there is a serious risk of crevasse fall on the Gebroulaz route.
I'm going to be in Switzerland for new years with a couple days in Zermatt in January. How bad is it? Not worth trying to ski a day or two while I'm there?
