Wasatch Conditions 10-11

June 24th. Skied Pipeline at the crack of 10am. Surprisingly good skiing with attention needed to avoid surface sluffing. An hour earlier would have been ideal. You can still ski to the car.

Derek, did you notice that big crown on the Pfeiff while you were up there? Maybe the rain crust struck again.

Yeah, we did. Appeared to rap around to the apron over Maybird as well. Impressive.

After seeing how much fun Jim, Derek, and Tom had on the North Face of Timp I thought I better get up there and take advantage while this amazing snowpack still lasts. Lots of sluffing from the summit down to 10k but below that the snow was fine.

Actually no, the squeeze is still filled in so no rappel was required. I just forgot to remove the 'rap' note from the reference pic I mooched off Jim who mooched it off marauders :rolleyes2

^^I wonder if the lookers right line would go through the cliffs? Maybe on an 800" year, but probably not in any normal year.

Isnt the lookers right variation the one that McLean and Barlage did? Looks like it might actually go clean in the reference shot but I hear they had to do several raps. Maybe they just hit it in a low snow year?

crack of 10:00 Skied all the way to the ROAD:)
Conditions variable. most of suicide still winter. had to kick steps on upper 1/3rd. Lower 2/3 softened up on decent for fun carvable corn. lower apron was dirty sticky snow. Big old cornice
at the top.

Should mention upper slope was slide for life frozen. I had a whippit but could of used crampons for stability kicking steps when booting. A Slip -Fall would of been very very BAD >> flushed out to the apron.

We had a nice MASS suicide on saturday. should ski nice for awhile as we put 8 people down it. real nice and smooth all the way to the road on saturday. nice supportable summer snow!!!

My brother and I skied in the Uintas last week. The coverage is astounding, and the snow was skiing great! We skied right off the summit block of Ostler Peak down the west face for 3000', a line I have wanted to get for many years. UDOT has made it up and over Bald Mtn. Pass I believe.

I should note, we saw MANY large avalanches. The cornices are not normal, and they have begun to fall off the mountains and in some cases triggering some large deep slides. We came a little too close to seeing one of these monsters peel off.

what are the condition like at alta. trying to get some turns in for my birthday tommorow. would it be a bad idea to hike without a beacon.

I haven't worn one for a couple months............I figure anything coming down now is going to be catastrophic and a beacon will be of no value to my survival.

Went up grizzly to twin lakes pass today at 11. Still a lot of good snow left at alta for you TheLoaf4Life.

lost my camera somewhere between East Castle and the very end of the road yesterday morning (Monday). Retraced my route today but no luck. If anyone found it, I'd happily reward for it.

Beautiful up there (except for the bomb streaks)! Agree beacon is optional - crampons and maybe an ice-axe would be more useful if your heading up anything steep early!

It would be of value to people trying to recover your body. I pretty much view my beacon as a body recovery aid no matter what point it is in the season. If I get buried and happen to be found alive it would be a bonus.

I never wear beacons skiing summer snowpack.

10k at 10 am, NE aspect skied better then expected. Saw this today for the first time. A buddy at the A-lodge said they noticed it about a week ago. Still tons of snow up there.
