Bet that was a nice wake-up call. Glad you're ok. Wonder if any POV footage of this exists...?
I got out for a few hours today. It's real heavy on Andesite; went to within 50' vert of the top of ridge, stopped there on account of snow not seeming super stable, and being solo. Too heavy for hard charging on the slope angles I was sticking to, but great to be out there. Mostly followed another track; breaking trail was brutal when I wasn't.
no footage from my crew in any case.
definitely a wake-up, and very enlightening on how ski patrol scrambles a search.
3 of us ran a beacon search, then patrol showed up & ran another 5ish beacons over it with 2 dogs. last came a single recco & probes. and that was with eyewitnesses who swore nobody was buried.
yea no summit or scott
Kirkwood was good today. You shoulda been here.....
I was lazy this morning after all of yesterday's shoveling and partly regret it because it was extremely good out there.

327 PSF. By my estimates, we should be safely within that . . . for now. I'll probably partially shovel the fucker just to be safe though.
Kirkwood.... They opened everything off 6 by the afternoon, from wagon wheel all the way to palisades.
Not like anybody noticed or cared. Too many acres of snow for the 120 people in the valley to track out.
Photos to come
Sun came out today and revealed wall to wall coverage top to bottom in the entire basin :the_finge

But even with the sun out it was hard to see at times

2017 is in 5th place for snowiest January out of 113 years of data with 135" (legit measurement). The winner? 1916 with 238" at lake level. Imagine that...
You know it is getting silly when you are storm skiing in Galena Forest because you can...Attachment 198180
Saw a pic of snow covered hills in Monterey... Did Mt. Diablo get any snow last night? I was partially expecting a mini-TR from Scrhalph.
I think I'll wait until the moguls firm up...Sunday seems about right. Yeah. Sunday. Why did I have three children? Need a reminder... :)
SB was nice today. Very nice.

Lucky!
Opposite at Alpine.
More like "F* me, a lot of peeps get to take off a Monday to go skiing!"
But still a lovely time!
Roundhouse shut down around 3:25. See above.
I remember Stop signs by Waterfall on traverse out that way.
Summit & Scott turning today, with corral fences up, leading to much excitement, but not loading [emoji19]
It really helps on work days since the Ol Puba Kid Watcher is already arranged. It helps too when Mother Nature delivers like she did again. Limited terrain and limited time was a good mix today. It is hard to work though with all the shoveling going on up here.:wink::wink::wink::rolleyes:My driveway is in better shape than the road. If you were a lucky one at KW today congrats, 3 times in 2 weeks it has been a private resort, wow. We still had a silky 18 inches of delight in Town. Face shots were had for our working brethern.
The actual snowfall might not be more. Depends on where the measurement took place. At my house in Meyers we definitely got more. At my work on the lake in Nevada it's probably accurate. All that matters is that the measurements are from the same place.
A water equivalent comparison would be cool to look at too
The measurements are taken at 24 hour intervals using a snow board. Any compaction/settling that occurs through natural processes is reflected in the measurement, but no human-induced compaction is performed.
The Tahoma station reported 161.3". Bear in mind that these are (near) lake level stations, so they got some serious rain during Jan 7-9, and that these are legitimate, trained observers using proper, standardized measurement techniques (i.e., not ski resorts or wannabe hypsters haha).
That said, as mentioned above the measurements are done at 24 hour increments. This means that if 24" fell after the measurement time on day 1 and then it got warm or rained and that 24" settled to 6" at the next measurement time (day 2), 6" is what is reported for day 2. Objectively measuring snow is not easy! In geology, we would call these measurements robust 'minimum estimates' of snowfall (i.e., at least X amount of snow fell).
The National Weather Service Cooperative Observer (COOP) Network. These are first order weather/climate stations used for long-term monitoring.
Hope this helps, time to shred!
First trip to the Tahoe area next week. This thread is making me super stoked!
Exactly!
We're in 5th place for liquid (includes rain and snowmelt) at Tahoe City.
Here's data from the Rubicon SNOTEL via the Reno NWS (The NRCS site has been down so I couldn't download all the stations yet and make ya'll a gangster plot)...serious recovery from oh shit land into planet fuck yeah:

A Squalpine employee called with a cryptic- "Both mountains closed due to a serious event" at about 8:55.
No other info. Anybody on scene with any further?
That first year or so with kid #3 is brutal. I resorted to drinking a lot. Probably not the best advice. ;-)
Hearing from a friend that a patroller at Squaw might have taken a ride early this morning... hope everyone is okay.
EDIT: hearing someone was killed. :-(
EDIT: confirmed from a reliable source that someone was killed. Damn.
