The part that annoys me about the whole unlimited pass thing is that it seems to me like meadows management is simply using the crowds as an excuse to charge more without offering anything more or taking any real action to address the crowding. I seriously doubt that the new price is going to do anything but pad Meadow's bottom line.
By making half of December and EVERY weekend throughout all of January and February "Peak Days" they're going to force any regular skiier to pay for the upgrade. What it really means is if you want to ski the bulk of the season/have a real season pass you gotta pay more. Meadows is a weekend warrior resort and they know it - hard to be a destination with no lodging and is a ghost town every weekday. I understand they want to encourage more mid week skiing but I think that's a nonstarter for most of their current customer base.
I'd be curious to see the breakdown of the crowd on those peak days to see how many are season pass holders vs day tickets.
I think ideas like forcing/incentives to/encouraging carpooling and lifties actually doing their job to direct crowds/set up effective mazes would go WAY further for alleviating the crowding issues but that wouldn't help make them anymore money so we're going to get the same shit service at a higher price. Right now the current carpooling effort is posting "please carpool" on the snow report, reserving spaces - hell maybe even a lot for carpool would go a long way in people actually doing it.
The worst part is Meadows has the PDX market by the balls (myself included) if you want reliable snow and decent terrain so I'm going to keep shelling out for it. IF there were another decent option - i.e. skibowl with reliable snow I'd be taking my business elsewhere but unfortunately that's not an option so I'm just gonna keep bitching.
End Rant
Similar situation in WA with Mt Adams East side and the Yakimas. Something there could be interesting, but the Yakimas have said "no thanks" so far.
MHM has cultivated a long term relationship Warm Springs. It wouldn't surprise me to see something happen there.
only two current development applications relating to MHM:
expanded lodge

land swap

It is. MHM owns it.
Or are you talking expansion past Tilly Jane and Cloudcap?
with the land swap specifically, it's clear MHM wants to be creating lodging properties
Riding at T-Line today was unreal. 14+ inches of soft powder. Got out on the Goats again for the first time since I hurt my shoulder. Paintbrush/Spraypaint were “closed” but offered some of the fastest fresh lines (lower Floodo was skied out early). The throat of the 1/2 pipe was deep, soft and FUN! One of my best hookie-days from work yet!

Spied dat. Other less important commitments have developed. Looks less than stellar for the rest of the week.
I don’t know how much greasing of palms went on behind the locked door but that land swap deal has to be the BIGGEST score EVER for Meadows. Have you checked the real estate price in Govy lately? That land-swap deal is analogous to exchanging 10 acres of Pearl district in downtown Portland with 100 acres of farmland in Canby. Score – Chaching chaching.
Glad it broke for you!
i also wanted to add that it was so much fun trying to keep up with people on saturday. i usually ride with the family or alone so it's a new experience whenever i get the chance. i had a blast bombing down groomers at the end of the day with q, bobby and shralph. earlier in the day it felt good to hear "hey, spook! you weren't last down this time!"
i swear though, following q is not really "following" but going in the general direction he was last seen. take your eyes off and boom! he's gone!
in other good news for me, i rode 3 days last week and 20k vert at bachelor on a 1.5 year old partial replacement knee managed with nothing but ice.
Nice bobby. Good skiing with you guys again. Safe trip home.
Any Southern O people been up HWY140 lately? Any beta you feel like sharing with the Orygun JONGs?
Given the current near lack of snow below 5K at Central O pass elevations, and also given the incoming high-temperature rain event ...
I'm trying to figure out when the timing could be good for East aspect of Mt McLoughlin. I bet the roads to the eastside TH's melt out by end of April, if they're not already dry .... So it comes down to being able to ski from the road (near the highway) during a good corn cycle before it's all melted out, or driving and sawing my way up the road to snowline.
Just thinking out loud ...
The skies today were thick and moist today to commemorate your visit Bobby.
Always fun to ski you and the clan
Not quite ski related, but good news for Hood
