Haha, oh im aware. you should see the safety factors involved in the guessing game known as geotechnical engineering lol.
My point was that a big reason for why we made such quick progress on the initial space program is because we had an unlimited budget, and significantly lower safety standards. If the budgetary/resource and risk factor constraints are removed from the decision/design/testing process and dont need to be optimized, things can be simplified and fast-tracked considerably... at the cost of money and lives. Imagine how quick nuclear reasearch and testing would have progressed if we had a tight budget and were concerned with health and environmental safety....
I entertained a few JFK conspiracies when I was young and my mom was certain that LBJ had a part in it. But Oliver Stone’s JFK conspiracy theory extravaganza was so ridiculous that I realized that they were all flawed and Lee just acted alone cause he was a kook
Well now it is. But at the time, TWA being shot down was entirely plausible. KAL007 was shot down a little more than a decade earlier. And it's not like there was/is peace in the Middle East or anything. A Libyan Airlines 727 was intentionally shot down by the Israeli Air Force, and an Alitalia DC8 was hit by a ground to air missile over Damascus. Even the US Navy mistakenly shot down an Iran Air A300.
As for the 747, there were two completely unpalatable options: well armed terrorists on American soil, or every single 747 was inherently unsafe.
There were apparently eyewitness on the ground who thought they saw a ground-to-air flash, and airline pilots in the vicinity (that's pretty dense airspace) who witnessed the explosion and/or the four mile long lake of fire floating on the ocean.
An aircraft that crashes due to a mechanical failure tends to hit the ground/water (mostly) intact. It was obvious to everyone that this airplane exploded.
From the Wikipedia article:
More about the possibility of a missile or bomb: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TWA_Fl...omb_detonationQuote:
Although considerable discrepancies existed among the many witness accounts, most had seen a "streak of light," described by 38 of 258 witnesses as ascending,[1]: 232 moving to a point where a large fireball appeared. Several witnesses reported that the fireball divided into two parts as it descended toward the water.[1]: 3 Intense public interest arose regarding the witness reports, as did much speculation that the reported streak of light was a missile that had struck TWA 800, causing the airplane to explode.[1]: 262 These witness accounts were a major reason for the initiation and duration of the FBI's criminal investigation.[46]: 5
There's actually an entire Wikipedia entry just on the conspiracy theories: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TWA_Fl...iracy_theories
Wow, there's a lot in there. I knew everything down to the "explosive residues" and the chief pilot being a proponent of the accidental/intentional shoot down/bomb theory, but it was like the energizer bunny of conspiracy theories. Bet that documentary is "interesting".
edit: oh, and this "As of 1998, only about half of Americans accepted the NTSB's conclusion that the crash was the result of a mechanical malfunction." That's the year I got my first "airline" job (i.e. regional airline)
So, who is suspected to be behind a missile or bomb on the plane? And why would that need to be covered up?
There's also the "Secretary Rice, please read the CIA memo titled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike USA" angle.
And the "if the public loses confidence in the FAA, NTSB, Boeing, and all the airlines" angle.
But really, some people just like to believe they have the red pill. Like all the red hatters.
Is there a grass that only grows 2 inches tall?
Has Big Lawn Care silenced the technology?
Shower thoughts.
It's called Astroturf. You don't even need to water it or mow it!
Has that wormhole Malaysian Airline letter Coreshot or Puregravity or whoever commented on this week been posted here?
Cause that one is a new level.
The PUD in Truckee has an ecofriendly display garden, including a grass that doesn't have to be watered and only grows so high and then stops growing. It won't make a nice fairway or a place to toss the old ball with your kids but it is grass.
Plastic grass is getting more and more popular these days and looks pretty good.
Yea. Let’s coat the ground in plastic.
Fuck that shit.
One of my neighbors in TC replaced grass w turf in his front yard several years ago and was mocked by a couple of other neighbors. Both of which have now have switched to turf as well. Turf is contagious. The government is suppressing turf vaccination rates
Turf is really common in JP. I’d rather just have a garden but I do admit that it looks very clean and natural. If there is such thing as any natural looking lawn.
I grew up in suburban MN and still can’t wrap my head around why people have lawns. It’s show of grandeur. “Look! I have so much land, I don’t even need to farm it.”
I blame big government’s push for the nuclear family.

A lawn has certain advantages--you can walk on it barefoot, it's easy to get the leaves off--if you think you need to get the leaves off--and it's easier to maintain than a lot of the alternatives, especially if you don't mind a lawn that's a mix of various grasses and weeds as long as they're green. A lot of folks in Sacramento are replacing their lawns with xeriscapes, rocks, and the like. But the tree doesn't get enough water and while those alternative landscapes look good at first they tend to require more maintenance than people want so they look pretty ragged after a few years.. I haven't seen a lot of people just letting their yards go native--mainly because there aren't much in the way of native plants other than the oaks in the Central Valley. It's all invasive species brought by white settlers and pretty unpleasant to live with and look at.
Do you remember the bar code conspiracy? Had do google it to remember what it was about. Certain numbers were bad : ) of corse 666 the worst numbers in the bar code!
Did not google the QR code conspiracy. I knew where it will go.
I can't imagine trying to maintain a yard of any kind in California or any arid area. I get away with a lot living in VT. I'm fine with the mix of weeds and grass in my lawn. I do put down grass seed occasionally if I end up opening a bare spot for whatever reason. I keep forgetting to buy and spread clover seed in the mix. We do mow when we get around to it but our lawn is easily the most ragged looking on the block. I let most of the leaves rot in place. They are from the neighbors trees so they can come rake them if they don't like it.
The thing that makes Sacramento semi tolerant in the summer--not that I spend any time there--is the trees, which reduce the temp by a good 10 degrees. So the question becomes what to put under the trees. Xeriscape needs a lot of sun, not shade. Bark and gravel turn into a mess pretty quickly. You've got to water the tree anyway and the lawn does fine with infrequent watering. There may come a time when we can no longer water at all but without the trees we'd be using a lot more AC. Our house doesn't have it, yet.
I bet riser5 gets Astroturf. And a Lambo.
I played baseball/football growing up and there is something really great about a nice grass field to play on. I still get that same warm fuzzy feeling from a nicely manicured fairway at a golf course. I have about 2500sf of pretty well manicured lawn in my backyard that is currently used and is intended to be used as a play area for my kid and dog- fetch, baseball, football, soccer, frisbee, running in circles till you fall down, wrestling, etc.
basically lawns are nice because they are big open areas that allow "activities". A nice lawn is nice because it feels better to play on- as soon as they invent field turf product that is durable enough for sports and doesnt give you turf burn im gonna save up and install that.
And is approved by the dog for elimination purposes. (And if you have a dog you still have to water it.)
Well, I will say that if I can afford a Lambo, I will have hit the mega jillions. Which means riser4 will become a ghost. And I'll be hiding on my private island having spent the Lambo money on said property. No AstroTurf though. A friend of my wife put down some in CA. It made sense in that specific situation, but a patio might have been a better idea. The friend lamented that it got hot. And you have to wash it. Among other things.
Grass is nice to have but I’ll never have more grass than what is reasonable to mow with mechanical push mower.

I’ve got no problem if people want to lay turf. What cracks me up are those families that only buy organic non-gmo foods, care about the environment, recycle religiously, maybe drive a Prius etc.
“hey babe, you know the only piece of earth we own and are responsible for? - yea, I was thinking we cover it in a giant carpet of petroleum product.”
“Great idea babe! That way Greyson and Brooklyn can practice lacrosse when it’s wet and not get muddy!!”
