holy hell those were some awesome lines all around.
can't believe reine is still getting it done.
Aymer had me yelling at my screen (again). So sick. Turdell is just too damn smooth.
Thought that Gorek was over scored. Great run, but seemed a bit more out of control through most of his run. I would've dropped him down a spot or two. Which potentially would've affected the overall standings. But whatever. Still a super fun comp to watch.
Baby Bec was a bit of a disappointment to me. 30 second venue. Thing #2 called it a junior venue with bigger airs. That entrance off the real top - which I watched in person in 2018 - is such a test of real big mt. skiing.
Watched yesterday with Thing #2 and there was some head-shaking about the judging. Still appears to be pretty much about who they want to keep around, and social media presence. Of course you have to ski to stay, but everyone there knows the FWT game is what it is.
YEWWWW!
Aymar opening up that double was the ski stoke of the year imho. YES! Reine too of course, but like someone said earlier, Aymar opened it up and went a bit bigger. Loved Turdell's flowing steep skiing and shows when you compare to some of the other competitors. Drew's lap was again different and fun to watch. All in all, I was pleasantly entertained.
I was hollering at the screen for him to hold it together and just get through the gate after he landed that double!
I'll post this here if anyone is interested in some behind the scenes stuff of the riders. It's kind of cool seeing how the riders interact around the comps, esp in this crazy year. FWT comps stuff starts ep 11

Reine definitely wins if he sticks that backflip. He went nearly as big on the double he was just more in control.
So would this be like the sick bird award?

Call me biased :fuckyou: but I still think Thing #2's giant 360 air near the top of the Bec in '19 was a sickbird move that went undervalued and underappreciated. I was there and that shit was gnarly. Terrible viz, high-consequence, etc.

You have to stand at the top to fully appreciate the Bec. It’s not so much about skiing skills but about ones mental ability to drop into abyss. The upper part is survival for us recreational skiers. Chicken turn - sliding - chicken turn is the name of the game.
The top’s a bit [emoji892] this year

^^ Dude.
It certainly is, and is also very much about social media presence. New arrivals learn that very quickly and veterans play the game to stay visible and on the tour. Once you figure that out you get to decide if you want to play or not.
That said, if you're absolutely killing it you can't be denied whether or not you play their game.
I learned over time and pretty early that while he is willing to take risks he ain't reckless, so I learned to trust his judgement. I've seen him walk away from moves that landed others in heli-lifts in spite of his attempts to talk them out of it and refusal to do them himself.
It is for sure scary to see your kid do that stuff, but you gotta let go a little if you want to be there without shitting yourself every time and knowing they're not stupid is a big piece of that.
He makes occasional noise about requalifying. Griffen M heading back to the tour is a little bit motivating as they were good pals. I think he probably could get back on it, but he's always been conflicted about playing the popularity game vs. just being a great skier/competitor. He hates that social shit and doesn't want to do it. We'll see...
Your kids are pretty cool. Thing #2 has always said just wants his skiing to speak for him and has never been willing to do the shit that sponsors and the tour have demanded. Sometimes there's been some cost to that, but that's who he is. Makes me proud too, so I get it.
I was super stoked to see Aymar on the podium. This is why the FWT wanted him on the podium

Scandinavian Big Mountain Champs - watch to see the next FWT champion at 2:30 in. Max Palm, 18yo ahead of Turdell and Reine after the first 2 days pulls off a big backie at the top followed by a double at the bottom

Thought this was cool. From MSP's 2017 flick drop everything. Includes a comparison of old school skwa rippers to Ross Tester, with a few side by sides

2022 schedule:
1. (NEW) Baqueira Beret, Spain: 22 – 28 January 2022
2. Ordino Arcalis, Andorra: 30 January – 5 February 2022
3. Kicking Horse Golden BC, Canada: 12 – 17 February 2022
4. Saalbach Fieberbrunn, Austria: 15 – 20 March 2022
5. Verbier, Switzerland: 26 March – 3 April 2022
No more Hakuba.
New thread....when we get closer?
I think the no Hakuba could have been COVID as much as wanting to get out of the venue. It was certainly a very different venue from the typical FWT competition arena. It will be interesting to learn more about the new format they are teasing.
I vote to keep this thread going.
Bummer Japan just never really clicked. Logistically and snowpack. Stoked to see a new venue, though!

To be fair, the Hakuba venue that was proposed to FWT was never actually used. It was much bigger and more open than what was used. The avi hazard was too much. Japan never should have been a January stop. February is still iffy.
But Europe-Japan-Europe all in March? No way.

Bummer there's still only one venue in North America, but I get that it's difficult to arrange currently. I'm hoping to make it to the Kicking Horse event this year - would love to watch in person.

I missed it before but the video says athlete cut after third stop (KH), then Fieberbrunn will be best of two runs. Rad
fwt finals in fieberbrunn with 2 runs (crowning of the worldchampions)
extreme verbier as a separate event? did i get it right?
and the big question will the SKIBOSS be back?

I hope so.
And—
I hope not.
Funny how both statements feel right.
