No tire weighs what it does because someone wants that weight. It's all a compromise. And if a tire is kinda heavy it's because in some way, construction-wise they wanted to make it tough. So, thoughts on 2.3 DHF, 2.3 DHR II, 2.4 HR on the front and Minion SS on the rear vs Butcher Slaughter? 29"
Thinking the smaller Maxxis size will sit squarer and roll faster on my skinny rims and with that, in addition to Exo, will squirm less than 2.3 control, but the differences may be minor.
Hardtail. XC/Trail. Dry. Hardpack. Loose over hardpack. Hardpack over hardpack.
Maybe need new tires mid summer.

The little teddy bear on a flying carpet is correct, for once, about weight being your guide and the irregularity of EXO durability/thickness. So follow that once you actually start logging at least 15 hrs/week on a bike on dirt.
I'm way on the other side of the spectrum, but I don't see myself ever using a DHF type tire for the trails around here. Too heavy and slow to haul thousands of feet uphill, and most stuff is hard-packed enough to not need all that tread. I'd assume on hardpack a small knobbed XC tire has as good or better grip anyhow.
And I'll gladly give up some grip to have less rolling resistance on all day rides with a ton of climbing. I'm considering a rocket ron, or an x-king, or maybe a nobby nic for the front- something with reasonably sized, evenly distributed knobs. Wasn't so thrilled with the ardent race as a front tire since the transition knobs basically do nothing and it is harder to get a tall posted xc bike all the way over on the side knobs. Would rather go back to the ikon than get another one of those, but it might be good as a rear tire.

"But do you ride 15 hours per week?" is a new TGR meme in the making. Damn, the last few years I've averaged around 200k vertical - which I thought was pretty good for a guy with three kids and a full time job - and pretty sure I still didn't average 15 hours a week even during mid summer when I'm out riding 4-5 days a week.
I guess "all-day" is a usually a bit of an exaggeration but I get out for 4-5 hours pretty often. A lot of my rides start with grant creek road to ravine trail because I live in that direction, then I will do a loop somewhere and come back over sometimes, or meet up with the TNR ride. That turns into 40mi pretty easily. I do a lot of road riding too so my legs feel pretty good by the time the trails open up. Late start this year though- didn't ride until mar 12th.
The two longest rides besides the butte 100 I can think of were woods to sheep to mineral and then down the east fork to the corridor. That was around 8 hours with a group that wasn't in a hurry (5hrs moving time), Reservation divide from ninemile road to burnt fork and back was another big one, took about 7 hours.
So for stuff like that the fast tires are nice, but back behind sheep I was pretty worried about tearing a sidewall. A full suspension bike with a little chunkier and more durable tires would have been way better than a hardtail XC bike on race tires for that one.
What about the Minion SS for an XCish, all-day tire? I'm kind of the opposite of jamal, grip > rolling resistance, but I'd like to find a compromise. Something that grips, won't fall apart, but rolls decently well.

I'm not in a hurry. I could give a shit about my speed on climbs. When I'm coming downhill on technical stuff and trying to figure out how to turn better, I really appreciate a grabby tire. If it's light enough to not give me a lot of problems, that's a plus.
I also could give a shit about my mileage. I go out to have fun. If 3 hours gets me 8 miles and I got a smile going; mission accomplished. If I spend 45min at the trashy single track kicked in by the interstate down the road from my house, and pop a couple 10" to flat jumps and maybe a bike length gap or two, and I don't get hurt; mission accomplished.

I love the semi slicks. Huge improvement in rolling resistance and as long as you're comfortable laying the bike over in the turns you still feel locked in. I also like that the back wheel can skip around a little bit and find its home on its own. Definitely a nice pair for a mega chunk front tire where you know you'll never lose traction.Quote:

Ironically, for now I inherited a 27.5 fork and wheel from the wife. The fork is an upgrade. The wheel is an upgrade. No discernible bad changes to geo. All in all the bike feels better, but more because it's got newer shit on it. I like that I'm finally doing what timid people tried 4-6 years ago when Pacenti really started pushing this shit.

At the same time I am moving to tires with larger knobs and even plan to get a dropper. Don't really like getting beat to the bottom of the XC course by a whole minute. Thanks for going up there, it is a long way and a tough trail. We were up there a few weeks after the race/gran fondo and there were already a ton of trees down at the first part. We just parked at the bottom and rode up. yes it's a long way, but it is a gradual climb so not bad. Lot of pushing on the first bit, then a good descent, then it's fairly rolling, then you get into this grass sidehill with hidden rocks.
