Emily Scott Robinson sings about the death of her Grandfather at 94
Somehow I've missed this thread in the past, and haven't dug through all of it.. so sorry if a repost, but this is the one that always gets me. Lots of personal connections.
EDIT: Just scrolled through the thread and saw MTM posted a Wharf Rat cover in 2016. For me a lot of it is the pain I hear in Jerry's voice, so definitely love the original. Not so much evident in this show, but one of the only live ones I could find on the youtubes. There are much better examples.
Saw a couple posts about Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt. That one always gets me too. Love it.
Another cover that hits the mark and always makes me feel the feelings:
Takes me back to a girl I knew in college. We listened to this one more than a few times. Taken from us many years ago. I cannot skip this song to this day and think back to those days, wondering where she'd be and what she'd be doing today...RIP Carrie.

Asked the wife out of the blue, what song would you pick of I asked you for something "beautifully sad"?
She's not a huge reggae fan, but does have a WIDE variety of music she enjoys.
Her immediate answer was this, although she argued that "that is literally every folk song ever" despite picking Toots.
I see your tribute and raise you....

I forgot how awesome this thread is. Thx to all who post
If you haven't heard it, now you have. Young Jennings has talent.

Gretchen Peters, "The Cure Fort he Pain is the Pain." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t915ab0QOuU
I’d have to assume Nick Drake is in here by now.

Emmylou is the whole package...
Beautiful, voice of an angel, fantastic writer. I've met Bonnie Raitt and Susan Tedeschi but I've never even seen Emmylou live. I need to fix that.
I love Red Dirt Girl. Here's a great cover by First Aid Kit.

In this nape of the woods neck of the well you know, always liked this song.
8/10/82 was my fav version.

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.
I hope you dance... I hope you dance...

There's a live acoustic version--guitar and mandolin--that I like better but it's hard to make out some of the lyrics on it.
I think of this whenever I dip into the Divorce thread.

Weighted down by possessions
Weighted down by the gun
Waited down by the river for you to come
My darling, you're darning my action
Of when three months, I was gone
But whose socks were you darning, darling
While I been gone so long?
Weighted down by possessions
Weighted down by the gun
Waited down by the river for you to come
A best friend to your ear of true said I was guilty of sin
Said my being gone was the best thing for you
But the truth, it all comes through for me and my kin
It wasn't the best thing for me but was the best for him
Weighted down by decision
Weighted down by the gun
Waited down by the river for you to come
Weighted down by possessions
Weighted down by the gun
Waited down by the river for you to come
While I sat there wondering, you thought that eyes were hid
And I had the honor of watching everything you did
So now I come with words of pain to bring you news of life
If you can't find your woman, don't take another's wife
Waiting down by possessions
Waiting down with a gun
Waiting down by the river for you to come
This one gets me every time.

Change, like the wind
Like the water, like skin
Change, like the sky
Like the leaves, like a butterfly
Would you live forever, never die
While everything around passes by?
Would you smile forever, never cry,
While everything you know passes?
Death’s like a door to a place we’ve never been before
Death, like space, the deep sea, a suitcase
Would you stare forever at the sun,
Never watch the moon rising?
Would you walk forever in the light,
To never learn the secret of the quiet night?
Still, like a stone, like a hill, like home
Still, what I find, is you are always on my mind
Could I feel happy for you when I hear you talk with her like we used to?
Could I set everything free when I watch you holding her the way you once held me?
Change, like the sky, like the leaves, like a butterfly.
Death, like a door to a place we’ve never been before.
Would you live forever, never die, while everything around passes?
Would you smile forever, never cry?
One more song about movin' along the highway
Can't say much of anything that's new
If I could only work this life out my way
I'd rather spend it bein' close to you

I don't know if I'd call this beautiful but it is sad. More a cautionary tale.....'
