I'm always skeptical of Amazon reviews, but that one sounds legit.

@Swine, My gf surprised me with a ghost bed just a little over a week ago and it's freaking amazing. Firm enough to keep your back straight and it has enough foam cushioning to make the top 3 or so inches the most comfortable form fitting thing that I have ever slept on. She had bought us a new mattress about 7 or 8 months ago but it was a pretty cheap one that basically collapsed on us after 4 months. We both had hot tub like holes we were sleeping in every night and both our backs were suffering.
It's still new so I guess it could break down like the last one but from the reviews that I've read that doesn't happen with these. We also each got a pillow and I highly recommend them. Every pillow I've had before was always too tall or squished to something too small but this thing is perfect. It's been about two weeks and our back and neck problems have disappeared.
I'm not sure if it makes any difference but they also do interest free financing. It's also warrantied for 20 years.
I'm afraid to say much more, we love it but people's opinions probably differ on what constitutes a good mattress.
Yeah for sure. I wouldn't blame you either way. I think it's pretty stupid they created a Groupon that voids a key component of the buying experience/product. But whatever. Last thing that would help us... if you don't mind. Approximate weight and are you guys mostly back, side, or stomach sleepers?
Being a 41 year old college student and a father I'm rocking a sexy AF Dad bod right now that I imagine is weighing in around 175-180. My lady is around 110.
I'm mostly a side sleeper but I have to rotate using all aspects since my body is so beat up. I usually can't get more than an hour or two on my left side because of a severely dislocated AC (class-4) but with this bed it hasn't been much of a thing.
Get the bed, get the pillows. After last nights sleep I'll go ahead and fully endorse their product. You really can't beat good sleep.
Damn. I really want it now; however, I got in a bit of an email exchange with the sales rep about why the hell they'd do Groupon if they were going to void the trial. Their response, conversely, makes me want one less. (This came after the initial inquiry where they were like "you could use the Groupon to get more pillows." What the hell am I going to do with 6 pillows?)
Swine: Ok, thanks for the quick reply -------. Not that your marketing team really cares, but I would suggest in the future to not do Groupon's like that: it kind of sucks and negates any sort of positive, at least from my perspective as a buyer. I realize this is a unique market, and I'm sure on your end it's a negative sum game to even cover returning a bed, but without being able to try it in person there probably isn't any other way; and a return trial is absolutely necessary for something like this.
Reply this morning: Hi Swine,
I understand where you're coming from but in my experience any and all sales on Groupon for any company are final. You have to think of it as big business, because it is. As a large company, we understand people want discounts so that's offered through some promo deals that we have, and I go through hundreds of returns a day just from GhostBed alone and we issue hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of refunds for GhostBed alone each year. If the company as a whole always did refunds and returns due to not liking the bed for every customer that purchased a GhostBed not on GhostBed.com, GhostBed would make no money and the company would go bankrupt.
It's just like a car dealership that tries to sell their old cars that have been on the lot for a few years: the warranty still applies but it can't be returned because you don't like it and want a new car.
Again, I understand where you're coming from and if I were the owner of the company I would at least have a 10 day return policy but unfortunately it can't happen that way and I'm not the owner. Hopefully you can understand the business banter and even if you don't choose GhostBed for yourself, maybe someone you know would love one for the holidays.
Regards,
---------
You issue hundreds of thousands of dollars of refunds and I should go ahead and not get the trial? My new mattress is like an old car? Gee, sign me up.
I believe you RA, but these exchanges make me want to hate on them.... ha.
It's just a risk/reward tradeoff. There's no market in used mattresses (it's even illegal to sell them some places) so the company eats the full cost on returns. So when they sell you a mattress at full price they're taking on a risk that you won't like it - in which case they'll lose money. By buying the groupon you're assuming that risk in return for a discount. They get a lower margin on the sale but they're assured of a profit (assuming they don't put the discounted price below their cost). You can decide for yourself whether it's a good tradeoff. Personally I would pay full price and keep the return option, unless I'd bought a previous bed from the same place and had good assurance that it hadn't changed.
I understand what the rep was getting at, but damn if that is a dumb thing to say.
And besides, even considering that returns cost a shitton, that's obviously built in to the price of the bed. I mean, they have some estimation of how many will get returned, and price accordingly. Sure, if more than expected get returned they may lose money and go out of business, but if less than expected get returned they make more money. If returns were not built into the price, then even the most awesome bed would have a hard time making money, because some people are still going to return it.
Yeah, I totally understand the economics of the situation but jesus, so stupid. I wrote them off (I also read a couple reviews that specifically mentioned their shitty cs).
Pangeabed Classic is on order, I'll report back after a couple weeks. FWIW, the Loom and Leaf was super tempting but for 40% less I'm giving Pangea a shot. From what I've read BigSteve is right, the L&L is a pretty damn amazing mattress. But my roof has a leak and my snowblower won't start. Priorities.
Well, we have 5 days on the Pangeabed Classic - and are both loving it. We're coming from a 5 year old Serta something or other that was about $1500 for mattress and box spring. The pangea is really supportive and kind of splits the difference between full memory foam and coil. It lets you sink some but not a ton. The latex top is quick to react (but not too bouncy because of the memory foam underneath) and you don't feel stuck. The quality of materials appears to be quite high, I'm impressed by the "fit and finish." They make their mattresses to order so it wasn't just sitting in a warehouse for months beforehand - additionally, cutting the plastic there was zero off-gassing and it was good to go about 30 minutes afterwards.
For the money I really don't think you can do better. Based on my research I still would like to check out a Loom & Leaf (Big Steve's choice) and a Nectar (it seems like it might be a more classic memory-foam feel, which I think I like). All things considered though, the pangeabed is great - I look forward to bed every night and it's a great sleep after how bad my body is getting hammered with all this ridiculous skiing we've been having.
A few other things: sometimes it seems they promo bundle the pangea pillows with the mattress. The pillows are really high quality but are much thicker than I like and we ended up not using them (I prefer feather or memory foam as well - pure latex is too bouncy). Also, if you're thinking of putting any bed on a platform it should have slats. I'm building a platform and there are a lot of plans out there that put it on a solid surface. That's no bueno. If a mattress is on a solid surface it greatly increases the chance of mold forming (a mattress pulls quite a bit of moisture from you as you sleep). Put that shit on slats so it can breath. That is true for any mattress.
just get a new girlfriend if I you wana test out matresses
Guess I should update y'all. The Tuft and Needle is a nice bed. It is firm, yet you sink in quite nice. It may be a tad bit bouncy for some because of the top 3 inches of their proprietary foam, but that's what makes it semi-firm. It's very well made and overall I'm happy with it. I'd say if you like the conforming feel of memory foam, but find pure MF beds too soft, this would be a good choice. I'm 220lbs and my SO is 120lbs and we both find it very comfortable.
Nada. I started adult-ing hard and bought a house. We moved the Serta to the guest bedroom. However, it's worth noting that we're sleeping noticeably better on the Pangeabed - and the Serta is potentially towards the end of its life if the normal 7 - 10 year guideline is to be believed. The Pangea is definitely more supportive in a good way; but that may just be the nature of the different foam layers vs. innerspring. I kind of think this industry might be becoming like bikes at this point, is there really a truly terrible design out there anymore?
Anyone recently purchased a futon they like? I need one for a frame like this:

It's not going to get a lot of use but I still would like to buy something comfortable.
I was at the Belgrade show, one of the best concerts I've been to

i've basically given up. my body hurts so bad after 2-3 hours laying down on pretty much every mattress i've tried in ages i just get up. modern waterbed, memory foam, the big name mattresses, foam core futons, air mattresses, etc., etc., etc. eventually i get so tired during the day if i can grab a nap it's usually better than my night sleep regardless. my dad has one of the fitbits that tracks sleep so i might borrow it for a while and see the dirty data
^^^ Maybe you need a sensory deprivation tank? Just a pool full of salt water; no pressure points at all.
altered states here we come!
On second thought...

So what I want to know is why, in the 21st century, nobody has built a sofa that holds or disguises a normal, off the shelf, full thickness, comfortable single bed mattress, and converts easily between a bed and a sofa? I am not talking about a futon or any of a bunch of various 'day beds'. Those things are always uncomfortable and do both jobs poorly. I have a picture in my mind of what I want. However I am not anywhere near a competent furniture maker myself or even a carpenter. There are a few points in my proposed design that definitely need a pro to work out. I also don't have the dough to commission a piece.
I picked up a fold out couch that has a 3-4" air mattress on top of the standard sleeper sofa mattress, and while still not the same as an actual mattress it is the best i have come across.
You can't fold a full thickness mattress into a sofa. Not unless you want the sofa to sit 3-4 feet off the floor and destroy the springs.
We have had our Ghost Bed mattress for about a year now and it's as good as when we got it. The thing is amazing. You really can't put a price on getting a regular good nights sleep that doesn't fuck up your back.
