ran into ectreeskier today - way cool dood - it is always fun meeting folk on the mountain. big thanks to skifishbum for the bro skis - wow what a huge difference wide matched skis make. talked to a couple of alta trollers today and they sais that so far they have not seen any instabilities - just stumps and rocks. it is always tops talking to these pros and trying to learn a little more.

Ubber quite outside of the pen today. Skied upper elevation N, NE & E today in Cardiff and Mineral. CT 24 Q2 failed a foot down on what appeared to be a density change , near sketchy traverse @ 9100' North facing. Around 14-16'' of new snow up high came in right side up.

No instabilities noted @ 8500', ENE. New/old layer bonded well with several inches of sugar on the ground. 12-15" new, mostly graupel/ rime topped with lower density flakes. , guessing 10-12% density.

Looks like the safe zone maps will not be released. Oh well. I wasn't at the meeting but I understand why people are against it. Drew said he always gets calls from people like scout leaders who just want to know where they can go worry free in the backcountry. If anything, the maps would have saved him some time in responding to all those questions.
As for skiing today: we hit da bird. Folks in the tram seemed to enjoy watching us shred the cirque :) Ditto on everyone else's stability observations.
My grins from yesterday definitely showed a great deal of stability.
I woke up this morning and they were still there.
sonuvabitch i have 3 more weeks of shitty, shitty school before I get out there.
Skool = suffering
Thinking about skiing while at skool = more suffering
Look at the bright side. It will only get better, but try not to think about it.
waited in line to ski the backside yesterday. turns out it was worth it. on one of the more northern facing ribs there was a mini fracture like 10'x10' didnt look too deep and made more of a slough pile.

They can and will close the mountain. It's well within their permit for doing control work or anything else they deem necessary for opening. Alta does it too.
Dug almost an identical pit on top of the Catherine's meadow skips yesterday. We had another 10cm of total snow. New stuff ~fist, older stuff ~4finger and an ice crust separating the rotten snow. If we keep getting some snow maybe this could heal up...
Nothing was moving for us, had someone tell us he had some large sluffing coming out in the chutes above supreme bowl. Not shocking.
When will people learn that when you control the money, guns, courts, and the jails, you can do as you please, close what you please, when you please?
Yeah, I know it was probably for a good safety reason,...and it's a PA statement, ... But, It applies across the board.:rolleyes2
Looks like some nice turns were had up there for some...
Cheers
Wow, my decisions really got a whole lot easier.
They must have blown a lot of man-made onto RJ.
Brighton tomorrow, Snowbird saturday.
Game on!
Poked around Alta this morning. Skiing was great, got a little sluffing in the new snow, but no biggie.
hit up the plasma center then headed up lcc. alta got another 6"-8" or more since yesterday. due to the very cold temps the new snow was very light - lake effect seemed to kick in several times. clicked a rock or two - no damage - unbelievable conditions with pow top to bottom. wow wow wow - stability is solid.

i think my new camera makes capitolp look like a better skier than he is. jk he whooped me today. the skiing is fantastic, especially when you expect to cream rocks on any turn and dont.
The fellow to the left insisted no base and rocky.

Didn't quite gobble me since I'm still here.
Did learn an extra thing or two which will be helpful.
It's on the short list for a history lesson.

Any reports from Alta dawn Patrollers?? I heard there might be a wind crust on some aspects? Any first hand knowledge to drop on me? Thinking of an afternoon assault.
thx.
