“We have to adapt,” says John Rice, general manager of Sierra-at-Tahoe for the past 30 years. “We have a whole new landscape.”
Rediscovering Sierra-at-Tahoe - Tahoe Quarterly
I think the real action got kicked down the road closer to the Dec 5th or so, but there is some good things going on so far. But so far this year, storms have had a tough time getting past the cutoff low season.
TLC to mid mountain opens tomorrow.
Fingers crossed for the forecast toward the end of next week. We need that first big storm to break through.
On the upside, I'm way ahead of my normal chores for winter. Very little is getting abandoned and buried this year.
Off to Boreal with my minions today. Kiddos are dying to ski.
TLC today was not as bad as expected. I put in 7 laps before the line got long. It's a narrow WROD and all off piste terrain is marked closed...or should be. Still, it was lift served skiing at my home mountain.
You shut yer dirty hoar mouth. the off piste is bomber, and loud

^^That looks like an injury waiting to happen. To the dog.
We had fun lapping TLC yesterday with the groms. A few near misses, but that just added to the excitement. I skied a lot of defense for my 6 year old.
Skied Boreal on Friday and I acted like I was 30 years younger. A couple of decent falls on the rails and I've been icing my knee for 3 days. Probably wasn't the smartest way to start the year, but it was fun.
Mid season more terrain open. Reserve one spot at Alpine and one spot at Palisades, then pick wherever you want to go last minute and screw the other spot reservation? Are people allowed to do this?
How will they enforce no shows?
I can’t wait
I would assume they won't accept the same plate at both locations, but if you have two cars to choose from you'd be okay
What is the verification process of license plates, names, etc?
Can people make troll accounts to spam reserve spaces?
I’m way overthinking this
the answers to your questions...https://www.palisadestahoe.com/mount...arking-program
I am just going to pretend this reservation system never existed.
Resorts midweek or roll in late with the kids on weekends like I always have.
F U palisades
What kind of shitshow is gonna happen when people make reservations for alpine, and then a storm rolls through on the weekend, or maybe just some wind which is not as easy to forecast several days out, and now the only skiing is at Palisades? Or Palisades upper mountain is closed but Alpine is fully open? They keep trying to market the place as one ski area, connected by the gondola, but the gondola doesn't run if there's so much as a sneeze in the area. Choose wisely 😌
On another note https://www.tahoedailytribune.com/ne...-plan-opinion/
Makes sense to me. Some important people that make decisions that are supposed to represent the people that live here are trying to get reelected. It's a little ways off, but vote.
Same. When kid-free my backup plan on weekends was to ride with friends who have kids on ski teams (a few are in this thread) and then buy the beers later or whatever but it turns out they don’t even have guaranteed parking, which is incredibly fucked up considering how much the ski teams cost. Gotta love dropping several grand and then still having to make parking reservations.
Let it snow so we can stop bitching about the parking.
I hate to bring more bad news but the whole parking fiasco is just a result of supply and demand resulting in inflation. Remember when season passes were cheaper, parking was free and no reservations were needed? A unlimited $2,000 Squaw or Alpine pass (one pass not both) with only holiday traffic and no other bullshit sounds like a steal now. With climate change, more people getting into skiing (remember when 4wd/AWD vehicles were rare?) and the population growth in the Bay Area and Sacramento valley plus no new roads or ski resorts I can only see the ski inflation rising. To make matters worse the large and growing inequality of wealth will incentives resorts to raise prices and make skiing even more expensive. Mark my words, the time will come when resorts will charge more for powder days (economists call this price discrimination).
Now let it snow so we can stop bitching!!!
Absolutely, it is greed. Price setting is a closely studied subject since every business would love to maximize their profits by charging everyone the maximum they are willing to pay for a good or service (i.e. price discrimination). The problem with price discrimination is that when not done correctly it pisses of the consumer (see the title of this year's Tahoe thread for an example) and can cost profits. The trick therefore is to "boil the frog" and move slowly enough to price discrimination as not to piss off the consumer to a point that it costs profits. It seems to me that is what Squaw/Alpine are doing.
Perhaps they can add frogs to water park. It would be a nice touch ;)
