You are mistaken. Not only was he a skiffle player, prior to his fame he was a studio player who was known for his ability to play anything on demand in a session.

I worked for Page for a time in the '80's. One night I took him to the NYC club where The Les Paul Trio played every week. The short version of the story is that JP was invited to jam with LP and I watched him get up on stage and proceed to play jazz. Yes, real be-bop style jazz guitar. He had a pretty rough-hewn style when playing rock & roll, but he really could play anything well.

I said Page should be known as a producer. The reason LZ sounded so thin live is because JP couldn't layer 6 or 8 Telecaster tracks like he did in the studio. IOW, JP had a studio sound he couldn't replicate outside a studio.

And being 'sought-after in the studio' has more to do with being pals with the right producer or studio owner than chops or tone. Context counts more than content. JP was the man for his time and place.

Composer?Producer? Bandleader? Yes
But Jimmy Page couldn't go to Nashville, LA, Muscle Shoals as an unknown right now and expect to feed himself on his sloppy guitar skills.

Molly's a badass and I love that song but your premise is based on some pretty big presumptions that JP can't do certain things, which you really have no way of knowing. You've only heard what you've heard.

I watched him play a lot of live shows, warm up in the dressing room, and was as surprised as anyone could be when he played legit jazz guitar that night. I wasn't his biggest fan then and am not now, but as a player myself watching him play that night completely changed what I thought of his abilities.

Lots of guitar 'gods' suffer the same lack of studio layering when they play live. That doesn't mean they can't play or shouldn't be known as players. Are there better players? Yup. Were there better players then? Yup. Could he show up in Nashville as unknown and get studio work? Who the hell knows! Does that mean he shouldn't be known as a player? Nope. To suggest that someone isn't a good player because they couldn't show up in those environments and get studio work is a pretty big stretch.

If you had been there I would be happy to consider your opinion about that particular performance, but I'm pretty sure you weren't. And he was more of a Les Paul guy.

Personally I think most Zeppelin albums sound like shit compared to other big budget studio albums of the same era. If anything I think Page producing the band was a detriment.

Right. In 45 years of listening to JP, I've never heard him Travis pick, for example. Keef could pinch out a few bars of 32-20 or Cocaine Blues, but JP never had the interest, apparently. He doesn't have to be Scotty Moore, but he's supposed to be a bluesman of sorts who popularized a lot of the easier licks, no? This definitely applies to EC though...

I didn't say he was bad. I will say he's 'not all that' as a guitarist, compared to the regard he gets. His other talents and skills, and his context, made him the monument he is.
I still lack evidence he's much of a sight reader, or has strong legatos, or even play scales fast without skipping a lot of notes and reinventing his pace as he goes. He didn't have super pitch either, back in them days before pedal tuners...

You might want to give JP a call about that. He used a Tele extensively in the studio (and quite a bit on the road), layering the single-coil sound in multiple tracks to produce a thick sound. This after Black Beauty with the Bigsby bender was kyped, and while he owned and performed and recorded with the famous sunburst LP he got from Joe Walsh.
