Sweet, westside rd action. Big quiet country on that side.
You're on Aurora there?
Yep, good eye. The road is in amazing shape. Any vehicle could drive it if it was open. But I believe the park service has decided to keep it closed indefinitely and just keep it in pristine shape so they can do repairs to the bridges and culverts as needed. Good news for gravel grinders.
It was 16 bike miles round trip to the trailhead I used. It's 18 miles round trip to the end of the road where bikes are not allowed any further. I believe its a little over 2,000 ft elevation gain round trip (up on the out and back). It's not enough biking miles to make it a great bike ride alone so pick a trail to hike as well. Carbon River is similar (14 miles round trip of biking allowed) and Dosewallips (13 miles round trip) in the Olympics .

started in whitehorse where we found that it is possible to pack 4 bikes and passengers in a pa-31 navajo if all the occupants (and pilot) are of reasonable size.

the weather was a bit mixed when we took off so much of it was spent at 3,500 m to stay above the clouds, occasionally we had some views of the area we would be cycling.

the upper canol is still very much a pioneer road, some of the hills were long, loose, and steep so occasionally we had to hike-a-bike

the road was closed earlier in the season for fires and then flooding, we got into a burn section right about the time my throat started to hurt. turns out what felt like horrible strep throat was covid. i felt like crap but managed to bike 75+ km each day - so long as i kept going things were good. whenever i stopped i wanted to collapse.

Lovely, except for the bugs. I wonder if I can convince my very popular with mosquitoes GF to join me on a trip to the Arctic...
Sad news coming out of Vermont this morning
https://www.velonews.com/news/gravel...ly-dies-at-33/
Certainly put a damper on the weekend. New course was much more brutal than the '19 one with more pave' riding and every bit was damp to wet from overnight rain.
RIP Sule
Noice.
cramming for cx season, opener next week!
