I do, batteries are cheap. Never carried the kit in backpack unless planning to exit the boundaries when open.
small 4-5" crowns triggering easily around squaw today & yesterday. touchy snowpack. they even opened then closed tower 16 due to excessive wind loading today.
What?
US 50
[IN THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA]
NO TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS ARE REPORTED FOR THIS AREA.
^ I'm not getting that
Quote:
US 50
[IN THE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA]
CHAINS ARE REQUIRED ON ALL VEHICLES EXCEPT 4-WHEEL-DRIVE VEHICLES WITH SNOW
TIRES ON ALL 4 WHEELS FROM 4 MI EAST OF PLACERVILLE TO 3 MI EAST OF

CHAINS ARE REQUIRED ON ALL VEHICLES EXCEPT 4-WHEEL-DRIVE VEHICLES WITH SNOW
TIRES ON ALL 4 WHEELS FROM 1.5 MI WEST OF KYBURZ TO MEYERS (EL DORADO CO)
It's fixed. I called too. Said no restrictions. I've seen that before after they clear a closure. Too good to be true. 88 is in a riddle now.
Three chain control checkpoints on 50. The driving was great except for the stop and go crated by the extra points. Oh. And hanging out at twin bridges at midnight for the second round of avalanche control has been awesome.
Apparently they're confuddled too
how exactly does one research chain control locations (since this quote comes from the page where you research said locations).Quote:
PLEASE RESEARCH CHAIN CONTROL LOCATIONS AS CALTRANS IS CURRENTLY WORKING TO
UPDATE CHAIN CONTROL DESCRIPTIONS FOR CONSISTENCY WITH INTERNET MAPPING,
LIKE GOOGLE MAPS & MAPQUEST.
Someone went for a ride near tower 16, hence the closure.

That wasn't a high snow year. The biggest year since I've been here (1976) was 2010-11 and tram face wasn't covered. Seems impossible to me. Bet you were looking at Headwall. Memory plays those kinds of tricks. I can't tell you the number of times I've gone back to someplace I had (what I thought was) a vivid memory of only to find it completely different. There's a trip in the Grouse Ridge area off 80 I did years ago that I've been unsuccessfully searching for for decades.
Gonna be a lower mtn kinda day. Wish i still has dual Homewood alpine pass. Alpine lot pretty full already and squaw
Traffic was backed up at a stop to the alpine light. Gonna be a shit show today.

Fun morning at Rose today. Drive up from Galena was a no hassle 20 minute drive. All parking is at the Rose side due to concerns about the access road to Slide parking lot. Got in line at 8:15 for North West, which was good enough for about 10th chair. After a 30 minute wait, North West opened early at 8:45 a.m. Headed straight to Slide side and got three great runs in the trees, never crossing another track. Snow was 10-14" deep. Dry, light and no wind affect. After a few more runs I did a couple laps outside the ski area boundary in upper Manzanita bowl/Hanks. Super fun, boot deep pow that was very tempting to just keep going. Traverse back in to the ski area is really easy due to the large Manzanita fields you usually have to navigate thru are buried. 3rd day in a row that the snow has re-set overnight and is untracked in the morning. Winds are definitely building with some heavy weather predicted. Would not be surprised to see Rose closed tomorrow as blizzard conditions are forecast.
Today was the best pow day of the year. It was light, consistent, very deep, and it just kept snowing. BTW, these photos from our last run do not capture how rad it was.

Resort/\?
Sweet. This season has been so good already I'm not even suffering from FOMO - just glad to see everyone getting after it. And also hoping for those late March / early April powder days where the resorts aren't even crowded since most of the bay area has gotten it out of their system by then.
3 days of pure greatness ! It be firing ! Irie ! :fuckyou:
sugar bowl is claiming everything but crows nest tomorrow, is that realistic? i thought they bullshitted less than squaw
The local fb amateur weather dude in Nevada county is predicting no resorts opening in the area tomorrow; along with frequent highway closures
Heavenly today (01/21/17)

Kirkwood was deep today. They got 6 open by around 10:45 and then 10 by 11:15 or so. Everything else worthwhile stayed closed. Patrol took a good look at eagle bowl but decided against it.
Route 50 was totally clear coming back, and it looks like they got 88 open now too. With the next system coming in I bet a bunch of people are trapped up there until Tuesday. Oh well ;)
This cycle has been a lot more manageable up north. Kept it mellow in the trees today.
