looking like a wind heavy event so good bet that nothing up high will open this weekend

Raised my eyebrows.
Also,
NWS: most intense period of
snow is expected during the day Friday where snowfall rates could
approach 2 inches per hour in the heaviest bands. Up to 3 feet of
additional snow is possible above 7000 feet through Saturday
afternoon with 1-2 feet at lake level...Then, it gets serious for late Saturday night
through Sunday night...
Hoping to jinx in a "trees fall on 80 and 50, blocking them for a week" kind of way.
Apparently this contraption was at Squaw today. Anyone have any idea WTF it is? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8c3ff7f297.jpg
You know for as much of a junk show squaw ops was today, it turned out alright for me. I didn't hit KT, but I also didn't wait in line once, but I did have plenty of fresh on all of squaw creek, red dog, and t-16.
So how likely will it be that I won't be able to make it from Reno to Tahoe City tomorrow? I get in tomorrow night and my flight back east is Monday night. Maybe I'll just spend the weekend drinking and gambling.
I'm not too worried about getting back to Reno once I get to Tahoe. I'm perfectly ok with missing an extra day or two of work.
how much at sugarbowl actually opened today? it looks like it was a sleeper day today.....
Have proof of where you are staying in TC--sometimes when 80 is closed over the summit westbound traffic coming from Reno is held at the state line but people who live east of the summit are allowed through. At least they've done that in the past.
Why do we need nonperishable food? Should be easy enough to keep stuff cold.
what's these rumors I'm hearing about a slide at KW today?

Disney and Lincoln, Sugarbowl and the upper gate off Lincoln. Not many folks there, i did no line laps with no breaks till 2.
x2 on this for me due to the above. As well as me breaking out the wootests which just made the smile on my face bigger.
^^thanks!
Were you skiing with a border buddy wearing orange pants? That is who we got a couple of pictures of (I thought we had more but we only took a couple while we were stopping quickly to drop into the North Trees on our second lap). In any event, here are the shots we got of him coming down:

Tits McGee. One of thos funny days when Carson Pass Closes on you and yet the Spur Opens. Maybe 200 of us had a real good time. Like the kind where you really really dream of. It can happen !
I intended to only ski a couple hours at best and go to Work. It Got DEEP. 6 broke down and that half of the mountain reset itself once it re- opened. Hard to see, it was cold, snowing, & windy. I left at 1 when the road re-opened as I still had the ol JOB to do. Noticed it was just getting slippery on the last run that was 2Xs as deep as the first, big slough.
Also, I did hear tonight that somebody was caught and maybe burried by something sent from someone above in a terrain trap/ chute. All Ok, just shaken was the word.
What happens tomorrow? Where to go? The drive back to SLT was:eek:
I've heard of this but never really understood how it works. Do you just drive around the line of cars waiting to get on 80 and flash an ID like you're someone special? I remember at one point seeing announcements that locals could pick up some sort of card for their vehicle to expedite the process, but that was years ago. Does this work going over Donner in either direction? Curious because I never used to leave Tahoe during storms, but now have to take regular trips down the hill. Also a bit confused because last week when it appeared 80 was closed, at least according to the CalTrans website, I decided to try my luck, drove over a pretty sizable berm the plow left at the 89 roundabout onramp, and cruised through chain control no questions asked. It was around 1 AM and I saw fewer than 10 vehicles between Truckee and Alta, so it seems like traffic was held in NV but allowed to get on in CA.
Oh, and Squaw was sick today, even though the usual late opening shenanigans ensued.
looks like slide in the notch guy said buried 5 to 10 feet! skier triggered.
^ got more details but I nor my source were not there. Probably some more of you local guys will know who was involved once more details float around on text messages etc.
Big picture was, a person was definitely caught carried and buried by a party dropping in above him and releasing a proper slide ... and they were able to get him out.
And that's why I ride with gear when I'm inbounds on storm days ... no guarantees of course, but yeah, at least a bit more chance to receive or provide help.
Or for your body to be found....
^ Not exactly, that's why I also Recco while inbounds.
Kidding.
Because there is no way I would waste my $ on Recco.
Excellent accompaniment choice. Probably my favorite tune to ski to. Was listening to it while making first tracks down Lower Beaver at Alpine a few years back. Probably still remember it due to the song.
Looks like a sick day.
I recall CalTrans giving out a sticker to folks living on the West Slope above Applegate. Had one in my old Explorer. It was blue and yellow, IIRC. You'd put it in the driver's side lower corner of your windshield and they'd wave you through closures. Pretty sweet. But yeah, no idea now.
They're doing a soft closure for locals only a lot more often at the bottom gate of Old 40 to go up to Sugar Bowl. I don't recall them doing that nearly as much a few years back. I strongly suspect it's smartphone proliferation leading to folks who wouldn't otherwise know trying to get around traffic and they don't want to deal with accidents in the windy, narrow stretch. Pretty sure you need a Serene Lakes or Kingvale address to get through. Not sure if they'll actually demand ID or not.
