The big issue will be charging infrastructure. Still not enough to go around. Talking to my BIL last weekend who bought a Ford Lighting a few months ago. He says it's a great truck, handles amazing. Has a nice semi-luxury feel to it for a truck. Great for hauling loads short distances. The real problem is when they take it from CT. down to DE. Range is about 230 miles. They have to stop along the way, and it's usually a 15 minute wait to get an open charging outlet. Then another 15 minutes to get enough charge for the rest of the trip.

Tesla just dropped prices on in-stock Tesla Model 3 RWD. $25,330 ($37,830-$12,500) in CO after 7/1 after the fed+state tax credits (assuming you qualify). Personally not a buyer (need AWD) but seems like a solid deal if you have another car for snowy days.

I've mentioned this before, but right now a huge target demographic for EVs are completely SOL.

See: people who live in apartments who are commuters. I've lived in a few different apartment scenarios over the last 5 years and 3 out of 4 of them had no access to plug in whatsoever. If you're lucky enough to have a garage you usually have access to a standard 120V plug at least.

Yep, EV's are for rich people in the suburbs and in Aspen. Don't work for the masses. We can't build functioning mass transit so I have no faith we can build the required amount of public charging in our cities.

Right NOW it is, because it's a newer tech. Longer term it's where things are going. Carmakers wouldn't be chasing it so hard if it didn't make their entire operation better in every dimension.

Methinks there's a solid business opportunity here. If I were able to work, I'd have started this business, or at least given it a hard look. And if the numbers don't work, I'd look/lobby for a subsidy to make it work. Seems like easy money and guaranteed growth for a decade or more. Apartment renters want charging, owners probably want to offer charging, and happy to let someone else (my company) manage the installing/charging/billing/etc.

It's the best crackpot idea I have.

I would also think that gas stations would want to install a plug or two to start attracting the EV crowd. IMO you would drive some extra concession sales while people are waiting for the battery to charge. Assuming you have some parking spaces for that type of situation.

Seattle is starting to install curbside chargers, but I can't say how successful that will be. I imagine a lot of frustrations with the chargers being blocked by gas cars.

Driving down I80 and saw a load of the Rivian SUV, I didn't know those existed. Fairly sharp vehicle.

I hung out with a biking bud who owns a Rivian we loaded up the E-bikes and went riding, dirt road or highway that truck could get up and rally, he said it does 175 kph. then he sez he has 4 more on order cuz they take so long to be delivered, why not order 4 right ? Rivian is not a kit car so I was impressed with the fit and finish

and buddy has 10 teslas he bought them wrecked from the insurance co and has become a wrecked/ used Tesla business

I know he also has at least 2 E-bikes, multiple chargers in his home and so buddy is all in on the EV

I like this guy doing reviews a lot.

We just jumped in. I did not want to buy a Tesla but after driving a BUNCH, they are just really damn good deals. Red model Y extended range arrives Sat.

I worked for a few years with a former Ford Motor company engineer. He said what most people probably already know. "Never buy the first year model of a new vehicle." And take that one step further with a new vehicle manufacturer.

I am reading reports that people who made reservations for Rivians have been canceling and there are quite a few available now.

Review guy talks a lot about the viability of the company, and frankly I hadn’t really considered that, (especially after watching “Long Way Up” where they had 2 Rivians drive from bottom of South America to LA). I just figured all these guys are like Daddy Warbucks and will just keep throwing money at their ego trip, but…he’s prolly right.

I think I mentioned this earlier in this thread. The rivian layoffs earlier this year included most of the engineering team recently built-up for designing manufacturing facilities and processes.

Nice ride!

Rented a Model Y for 7 days during a recent vacation to really test it out. While Tesla vision is still a bit buggy (esp. parking in tight spaces), we were so impressed that we ordered a Model Y Performance before we returned it. $12,500 in tax credits got the price down to what we were looking to spend on a less powerful (and considerably higher maintenance cost) used Audi or Volvo wagon.

Three WalMarts by me have spent months tearing up pavement to install gas pumps at a cost of who knows how much.

Zero EV chargers added.
