In theory, yes. But in reality police obstruct evidence, cut & paste audio/video to fit the narrative, and generally just don't act with transparency in matters involving dash/body-cams. Discretion is up to the chief, and corrupt chiefs continue to suppress video that implicates officers. Mayors, DAs and other high ranking officials as well. Regarding civilian video, fuck yes it makes a big difference. State controlled video? I don't think it's worth the fiscal outlay considering how it's manipulated.

What I'm telling you is that the criminal justice system is not so easy to analyze as to read about it in a magazine. Are you involved with the criminal justice system? Can you tell me how many bodycams you have looked at? Do you know how recently bodycams have become "the norm" for many police departments? Do you know how much it costs for a police force to buy bodycams and the hardware to keep that much data? Do you have explicit proof of officers manipulating reports or bodycams?

There is a shift towards transparency. Who do you think is doing this? In many instances its the police departments themselves. They don't want bad cops, they don't want a bad name, they don't want to be shot in dallas because some asshole in ohio killed a guy for no reason. In other cases its the city goverment that's tired of getting sued for cops being assholes.

Have cops killed people and gotten away with it, they must have based on the statistics. What do you want to do? Throw out our criminal justice system that has evolved over 200 years? Or keep the evolution process going in the right direction. I think it is going in the right direction... maybe not fast enough for your liking though.

It is shitty, and it's daily reality for millions of people. It's pretty easy to understand why those people hate cops.

This is the revolution I'm waiting for. I have no sympathy for people who hate Obama for being muslim, hate the senators and representatives they can't name, hate the local government they don't participate in, etc. But cops have become hired racist thugs who operate in a parallel universe in which the customer is always wrong. It's time we stop accepting that shit.

I'm not being a dick, but these stories had no information about how people were being arrested (could only read 1st and 3rd). My guess... and it's only a guess because I have zero to go on, is that the minority kids are smoking in the park and the white kids are doing it at home or in their cars. Doing it out in the open is gonna get you caught.

Has almost nothing to do with the government. Has everything to do with a police force that has gone rogue. Stealing money from citizens who have not been charged with crimes. Harassing, assaulting, raping, and murdering citizens at will. And generally feeling like they have license to humiliate and intimidate the people they are charged with "protecting" and "serving". Turns out, the price of ensuring safety from imaginary criminals is enduring threat of harm from the real criminals - the ones who commit the crimes and don't go to jail. That's why the police hated the mob... They didn't like the competition.

I've never heard this, a quick google showed as a way to control the mexican immigrants first and later adopted to keep an eye on black jazz musicians (and obviously expanded at some point)... thanks for pointing it out.

You're gonna hate this one big steve, another opinion I have as a libertarian is that every federal law should have a sunset clause. I think 10 years is beneficial, it allows EVERY law to be analyzed every 10 years to see if it is still necessary. This is a great example of one that would probably have been struck down (maybe not though since it's been around since the 30's).

Keep reading... prior to several years into the medical marijuana movement, every time it came up for discussion, anti-drug legislation was strengthened and expanded. Funding increased, law enforcement increased, penalties got harsher, and more people went to prison. So many in fact that it spawned incredible growth in the private prison industry, just so we'd have a place to lock up all those dangerous negros and spics we kept protecting and serving.
