Xenforo is ultimately the way to go...but it is not free and not necessarily a smooth and easy transition over from vbulletin.
I think most of the larger forums that migrated hired a company to do it and now have ongoing support costs (but...they work great now...so that's the tradeoff).
Subforum loads seem slower than page loads.
But overall, a slight improvement.
This feels like such a sad ending for TGR forums. It should at least go out in flames of glory, not closing the tab after 5 minutes of a spinning wheel.
