Seems like I’m a Volvo guy - kids off in the xc70 and I
Just bought this project from customer at an agreeable price….. 05 s60 awd 2.5T auto
Needs work but with only 115k on clock awful lotta miles left in her.
Regards
Swedish chef
I know you can do it better than that dip shit at Torchlight where we got the XC60. Become the NJ Volvo go to guy. Do it!
This is exactly why I couldn’t pass up a 5cyl turbo awd sled….
But gravity you could be onto something - using some version of the swedish chef tag I go on late night local access cable making cheesy commercials dressed like the chef and babbling away in swedish tongue….
Imagine
In Italy now. Seeing a lot of D5 models. What’s keeping people from importing them to The States?

You could specialize in the Bertone Edition(s) because NJ loves Italian named things. For real though, every shop that focuses on used Volvos is anti regular maintenance and they all refuse to change tranny fluid because they're "sealed for life". You can figure what else they choose to ignore.
Nice! Just run through all the typical items you'll want to do at that mileage and it should prove to be a great car. I have two 2.5T's (about to be down to 1 here soon) and it is just such a neat little power plant. I'm bout to sell my 2013 S60 T5 AWD you guys saw my progress on to make room in the garage for the new car. I've really liked it though.
You got that right! Every shop, including the dealer, has fought me on wanting to do trans drain/fill telling me the same thing. I've always had to tell them to just do it anyway. Transmission on my XC70 still shifted like new when I passed it on the next person, even at 230K. I attribute that to ignoring the manufacturer's "lifetime" fluid statements and doing it every 50K or so.
Look up grey market cars. Not worth it for any car really. Also:
The D5 is a great powerplant for the European market. The problem with bringing that engine to the US is with the quality of US deisel fuel. Much of the US consumption is by the trucking industry, which uses a "less refined" deisel. The D5 is designed for a "low sulfate" deisel, which is unavailable in the US. If the oil companies would provide the proper fuel...
This one was registered to drive on the street; not used on the track at all. Not sure what hoops he had to jump through, or lies he had to tell to get that done.
He wasn’t what anyone would consider rich, but not poor obviously. Apparently he’d work for a few years in industry when he needed money and then go back to working in motorsports when he could afford it, since that’s what he actually liked.
After he finished the stint with the team I worked on he went to work at General Dynamics as the engineering manager of a project to develop a mini Hummer type vehicle that would fit in a V-22 Osprey. He took a lot of the team with him to work on that. I was asked to join but didn’t for a few reasons, not least of which being that as a Canadian I probably couldn’t have gotten clearance to work on the project anyway.
(Team owners would be the ones with the cash for grey market track day cars.)
Gave the wife's XC60 Polestar T6 a little love a few days ago. Tranny fluid exchange, both diffs, transfer case, Haldex fluid change, spark plugs, PCV service with new intake gaskets, oil change and that fkn pita cabin filter. Now that it's not trying to spit pressure out the dipstick tube (that PCV must've been nearly clogged) I can get in and clean up some more details but for now it's running and shifting great! Zoom zoom :)
Called local Volvo dealership today about getting a third key fob. They said the fob wold cost $300, and the labor to reprogram it would cost another $500.
Local Indy Volvo repair shop can’t do it. Another indy shop 35min away will do it (no price yet) but they need to keep the car for a day or two because they’re super busy.
Local locksmith that specializes in autos said they don’t have the computer programmer to do Volvos.

Well, that sucks. Surprised your Volvo indie doesn't have VIDA which would allow one to program the fob, but does require a brand new key fob. Dealer price you got quoted is outrageous!
I saw one "life hack" on one of the Volvo forums where dude said he just told his insurance company he ...ahem... "lost" both his keys and ended up getting 2 brand new ones at the dealer, all covered for essentially the price of his deductible. :D

My buddy does keys at his shop and said it's the biggest scam in the biz. The fobs are cheap on eBay and it takes longer to pull the car in and connect the machine than it does to program them. He does em for half the price of the stealership and still cleans up.
It IS a scam for sure. I've ranted about it before here, but the dealer trying to rip me off on a VIN coded part is precisely what inspired me to invest in a VIDA/DICE setup to begin with. I went rounds and rounds with the service department about their supposed "5 hours" needed for labor and a few more for programming. I think they wanted something like $1200 for a part that cost me around $160 AT THE SAME DEALER from their parts department (service advisor said it was like $300) and was like a 5 minute job to install, if that. After I went through like 3 different worthless service advisors, I ended up convincing one to let me do the install with the old one dangling there and all they had to do was swap the connector and do the programming. It was like 10 minutes for them to do the software side of things. Keys are no different. They act like they're performing some sort of scientific wizardry to use their "dealer only" programming services, when it's actually easy AF. The software literally walks you through diagnostics and everything step by step. Now I don't need them anymore for that stuff, thankfully.
Give these guys a shout and see of they can refer you to a locksmith in your area ?

I'm in the market for a modern-ish Volvo and I've sorta been out of the game for a bit. I've owned two red blocks and two white blocks over the last 20 years. Still have one of the red blocks, but looking to add an AWD, sporty-ish DD to the quiver.
My last experience with a Volvo that ticked those boxes went terribly. It was a 98 V70T/AWD (non-XC), and it was a total piece of shit. The PCV and AWD systems on that car required way more maintenance over the 6 years/80k miles I owned it than expected (rebuilt both, twice).
That turbo shitbrick caused me to swear off "new" Volvos forever, but that was 7 years ago and apparently I have the memory of a goldifsh, so here we are.
So, what's the skinny on, say, 04ish-12ish 60/70/80 models? Is there a golden goose year/model/motor in this era-ish?
I'm specifically interested in the mid-size sedan or wagon models (Not coupes, crossovers, or SUVs).
You should cross-post to the Wagon thread as a few mags either own or just bought some new(er) Volvo longroofs.
You need to go to swedespeed.com and read the forum for the year and model you're interested in.
Both Buster and I have high mileage V70Rs. Mine is an 06 and has been the best Volvo I have owned out of 4. Montucky had a newer XC70 he liked too.
Yeah, I'm familiar. Part of the reason for posting here is to find a starting point on which of those platforms to start investigating further. And more importantly, to find out which red one is the best one.
What's high mileage? I found a clean 04 V70R w/Nordkap blue interior that may be the sexiest wagon I've ever seen, but it has 150k on the clock. Barely broken in by "old Volvo" standards...
Our 06 MT V70R has 183k on it. Last big jobs were the struts/shocks ($3k) 2 years ago and then intake manifold/turbo seal/hose replacement $2k last summer.
Thing still pulls like a champ. Rips.
Keep an eye on bringatrailer, good ones pop up there and go for less than $25k.
Here's a 2000 V70R with auto https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2000-volvo-v70r-6/ at $4400 current bid
Nice. I *think* I'm looking for a newer body style, only because I've already owned two on that platform.
I asked this guy about service history/why the title is rebuilt. We'll see.

I had a '14 XC70 T6 that was a joy to own. Rear angle gear started to slip at ~150k and it was time to move onto my prior Audi wagon.
I’d say get something from the teens with the 6 cylinder T6 engine.
