Haven't check in on TGR in a while as life got busy, but this thread continues to deliver. Thanks all!
That Margo cover of Sermon is chilling. I'm excited to hear that album in full. I love Stereolab, and lots of other great female vocals on that. Hopefully they don't butcher anything like (in my opinion The National did to the Day of the Dead album).
Johnson just released a show date in SLC, gotta try to check that one out. Missing Whitey Morgan as i'll be in Steamboat that weekend, but Bingham is also coming in March which should be a great show. Been waiting on him to come through for a while.
Houndmouth!
If you are a deer tick fan check out middle brother (side project )
I was about to post these guys up in this thread. They have definitely blownup since opening for whoever it was last summer, maybe summer before (Miranda Lambert?) but they still bring it. We saw them at Belly Up here in town last summer and Charlie Crockett opened. One of the best concerts I've ever been too.
That’s not the Issue

Maybe old hat but still a good one
Turnpike is good stuff - catchy songs - love it. Hayes carll , Ryan Bingham , Cody jinks , uncle lucious, reckless kelly, whiskey Myers , the wild feathers , Tyler Childers , wood brothers - all good !!
Don't know if they've been mentioned, but The Steel Woods are the shit. More southern rock, but I've been digging it.
Let me introduce y'all to Slaid Cleaves
The pride of South Berwick Maine, now of Austin Texas. His Pandora is pretty much a summation of this thread.

Good stuff, but seems especially up Foggy Goggles street
Too bad they don't have a YouTube video of the actual performance. Probably find it on NBC.com. From The Voice a covert of an old Charlie Daniels song:

This thread became irrelevant at "Keith Urban" and should've been locked and/or purged. But Hell, there was probably a "Toby Keith" in there at some point before that I didn't catch due to selective blindness.
But I guess that's ok as very little of this thread has been country.... In general, whenever someone uses the word "GOOD" in front of "country music", what they invariably mean is "I asked my Redneck buddy for some recommendations but I can't stand this twangy-George Strait shit" and are really looking for Americana or at most, country rock. In which case, just stick to Lady Antebellum and Wilco, or Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bruce Springsteen for the classics.

so how do you feel about Texas Country Music?
Texas Country Music (more popularly known just as Texas Country or Texas Music) is a rapidly growing subgenre of American country music. Texas Country is known for fusing traditionalist root sounds (similar to neotraditional country) with the outspoken, care-free views of outlaw country. Texas Country blends these sub-genres by featuring a "take it or leave it" approach, a "common working man" theme, and witty undertones. These often combine with stripped down music sound. Texas Country Music can also be called "Red Dirt" Country Music. Sounds from Texas and Oklahoma have influenced the scene of this particular genre.
Neither the location of birth nor the location of upbringing seems to calculate in the definition of a Texas Country artist, as long as the origin is not in the corporate Nashville scene as the genre tends to be anti-Nashville. For example, Chris Knight is considered by some to be a Texas Country musician, despite his Kentucky ties. Adam Hood, an Alabama native, also has had success in the genre. Even international musicians, such as Alberta, Canada native Corb Lund, have been successful in the Texas Country scene. This just shows how many musicians all over the world have adopted the Texas sound.
I agree that there are some crap country songs here, and some examples that just aren't country, and that there are plenty of folks who like country music only when it isn't very country, but think the genre is pretty darn expansive.
Americana isn't so much a genre, as a catch-all phrase for music that isn't being sold within any more mainstream format. It's similar to the way the term "Folk Music" was used 50 years ago. There is plenty of "Americana" that is more "Country" than much of the right-wing-pop-music-with-cowboy-boots that is played on most country radio stations. There is also plenty of "Americana" that is nothing more than excessively strummy pop music with folksy outfits. Country represents both an ever-broadening genre, like Rock 'N Roll, and a marketing track that only represents a far more narrow section of that genre.
Example:
This was on a country album back in 2000. Today it would be classified as Americana because of who will buy it. I still call it country. Emmylou Harris was country now she is Americana. Hell, they might even call Johnny Cash "Americana" today. Fuck that noise.
On an unrelated note, here is the original version of "Why Baby Why" before it was shortened to fit more songs on a 45:
