dude - there will be snow - if you are coming this way you'd damn well better get ahold of me - I'll be itching to ski - family friendly compound here - easy camping at KM or on the Pass - bring the wives
Mike, still looking good for Sonora Pass to open this Wed? Probably won't happen early enough to hit Leavitt Peak? Wondering if there's a snowbridge stil at the hairpin Blue Canyon pullout.
As far as I know Wed is the day. Usually noon, but we hit it at 0900 a few years back. Unknown about Leavitt and snowbridge. Have not seen any pics or heard 1st hand from folks on the road lately. I'll likely be waiting at the gate Wed. Maybe ski Thu? Planning to ski with the family Sat Sun Mon. Krystal might be ready for s mellow tour. Owen needs to try out his new skinz
Thanks, Mike, doubt I'll make it Wed, but maybe this weekend. If so, I'll look for you. PT Cruiser, right?
Still saying closed for 108. I really want to try to get a day trip up to Leavitt etc maybe mid-week since I'll have childcare. Any interest soon? I may go for the easy ski at Alpine this Sunday. Just ideas...I probably should just go back to work now.
Edit: just got verbal confirmation that they opened the gate at noon.
Game on.
is the access to leavitt portal from the very top of the pass?
i' ve never skied it, and I'm thinking of hitting it tomorrow?
anyone knows how long out takes from the car to the peak?
I'm in average condition (skin about 1200 ft per hour over the long haul).
thanks

I want to say it took us around 3-3.5 hours to get to the top of the peak from the pass, we weren't moving particularly quickly and one person in our group was on skins for only the 2nd time in their life. There also wasn't much dirt hiking on the PCT on the backside of the first saddle, probably a little more would be necessary this year with the low snow levels.
Any beta on how the Blue Canyon exit looks and how filled in the Y is would be much appreciated.
OK, so....
Looks like Krystal Kartwright is up for a mellow tour off the pass tomorrow. We need to drop the kiddo at school at 0800, so we won't be up there until after 10.
Probably later than you'd want, but if anyone wanted to drop a vehicle at Blue Canyon and ride up to the pass with us we could do that.
Also, I'm willing to shuttle you up the hill if you leave a vehicle at the pass and need a ride back up. Timing could be tough, but I'm willing to try.
I'm always on the lookout for folks with packs. PCT hikers might get a ride to Bridgeport.
Traded in the PT Cruiser for a crazy looking pop-up on a Ford pickemuptruck.
Friday solo so far.
Sat and Sun should be family 1 day, solo another. MTW next week look good.
PM for rides or a place to crash.
The skis are crying to get out, If only! Make sure to post pictures!
I'm planning on a recon dusk patrol tomorrow. I'll post any photos that turn out if there is enough light. (There should be with the full moon.)
Let's try to get together in the next couple weeks Vets.
Leavitt Lake?
Saddlebaggery?
Ebbetts opened today.
Sonora Pass was great. Coverage is good. Should be in play for a while. Y looked pretty good from the road. Snowbridge looks a bit sketchy but plenty doable for now. Pics later.
Sounds like a snomo crew I know will be camping and bwaaping west of the Pass all weekend. I'm always down for some towmo laps. Bridgeport winter rec area closed, so it should be quieter on the east side.

I'll be up there tomorrow. I think I was just sorta given permission to spend the night and ski Saturday, too! Maybe I heard her wrong... Family touring and jump building day Sunday.
tried to ski the y couloir yesterday. pretty frozen.
parked at the first hairpin west of the summit, skinned up the drainage, skis on all the way

That was me rolling by you.
Skiing was good on all aspects off NoName today.
Binding worries sent me home this afternoon. Weekend plans are a fart in a windstorm at the moment.
Sled crew well established in meadow pullout just west of the pass. Mucho bwaap bwaap this weekend. Be warned.
LL road gate closed. Everything looks good back there.
I thought you were the scruffy looking fellow with a pretty woman driving by.
what's good and steep there that's south or east facing.

Thanks for all the reports. Sounds like the Y on Leavitt isn't quite good to go. Anybody ski the bowl? Is it softening up?
Lots of folks at Blue Canyon and the Pass. We found solitude.

Krystal Kartwright is feeling better
Looking at GPS track... 1.5 miles 850' up and down - not bad for a six year old
My Otter Box is filthy and Krystal Kartwright's phone has a better camera...

Mike, you're a lucky dad and Owens a lucky boy, very cool to see the whole family out. From the scree walking photo, looks like the west side of the ridge (PCT toward Leavitt) is pretty fried. Is that indeed the case? Did you hear any reports of the snow quality on Leavitt and down Blue Canyon. I'd imagine the canyon snow was corned up nicely, but the report about the Y being frozen on Leavitt has me wondering about the bowl. Must have warmed nicely today.
Got no beta on that. I'm sure folks were out thataway. It's gotta be good. Warmer today than yesterday. Should be warm all week. Start times should be earlier. I was surprised to see so many folks gearing up along the road as late as we rolled by. East aspects are ready early.
here is some Sonora Pass stoke I found on the intertoob

I was down at Sonora pass on Friday. Went out to ski lake on Leavitt lake road. It was the best snow I had this weekend. Coverage seems good, or at least how it should look in may.

I did a Solo Dusk Patrol recon mission up at Sonora Pass last Thursday.
Here is a link to a TR
Sonora Pass currently offers many good options.
Anyone lose these? Tell me the initials on the back to ID.

Close...
I got the photag and sled crew on the alert, but these might be up for grabs.
Another excellent day on Sonora Pass. Krystal Kartwright had a nice long tour. Seems to be fully recovered from concussion. Wind and clouds and sun fighting for control of the snow. We poked around on the north side of the road.
Any rowdy mutha fuckers wanna go look at something with me next week? I got something worth keeping an eye on. Maybe too much for me to ski but I'll go along.
If you can't be an athlete, be an athletic supporter.
So, I'm coming back to California in about a week to work this summer, and planning to ski shasta, maybe lassen, sonora, and hopefully some stuff on the Dana plateau as well. I originally planned to start at Shasta and head south, but how is the snow holding up on Sonora? Maybe it would be better to start there and end at Shasta? If anyone would like to get out and do some touring, that would rock too
^^^
Start south, work north. Dana and Sonora won't last long this year.
Mike, glad you and the fam are getting out.
I'm in re-landscaping my back yard hell. Have to have it finished by the 25th for a double grad party (daughter HS, son JH). Might sneak away the 17th...
