Maggettes, what are you skiing on this season?

Current line-up minus the requisite geriatric rock skis:

168 Salomon "Race Stock" 10-3Vs with 914s for those fast groomer days-stiff(er) and zippy

165 Salomon Pocket Rockets with 912tis...laugh all you want, these skis are like a pair of comfy pjs...cozy, fun and forgiving

167 K2 Phat Luvs with freerides...just wish I had gone longer here cause with that big shovel, I always feel like I'm about to superman into a face plant...these are my least favs

168 Volkl Gotamas...newest member...will be mounted with 912s

I'm 5'5, average size and generally have strong legs (soccer, running, etc...), but I like to stay on shorter skis because of knee issues... I do pay for it at higher speeds.

I 've been called a ski slut, gotta have a new pair every year. Here is this years quiver and question. All are mounted with Dynafit TLT's- and skied with Garmont mega-rides.

New faves: Dynafit FR 10.0 168cm- for long backcountry trips/ trail-breaking/ guiding- quick, super-light, took a while to get used to- they don't hold a long-radius turn- but like to twitch a bit.

Old faves: K2 Work Stinx 174 cm. I am trying to sell these but no luck yet. They used to be the best in the backcountry, but I upgraded to the FR 10's- lighter and quicker, now ski the Work Stinx deep days at Targhee, etc. They are great to jump on and hold big turns in big terrain.

Rock skis: Atomic TM:X 168cm, with old spinny Dynafits whose heels need rebuilding (it's on the list)

New skis on hold at local ski shop: Karhu Jax BC 173 from 2005 at shop cost- I want, I crave, but can't afford any more new bindings, so the Work Stinx will get stripped. Anyone want them for cheap?

I am 5'6", 140, but ski forward and aggressively, stand up tall and like to go fast. The 168's are a bit short- the 174's perfect for me. I spent a winter on a pair of K2 launchers in 180 and w Fritschis a few years ago- got hooked on the speed but couldn't bring em around in tight trees. I used to be a tele girl but am wellpast 40, like locking em down and doing long runs without stopping, and the releaseability of the AT binding is crucial as most of my time is in the backcountry.

I added a pair of Sugar Daddys to my "quiver" and they are still virgins because I haven't mounted them yet. I will be putting Fritche's on them, but I am wondering about the "forward mount".

Those of you who ride "mens" skis... did you mount them a hair forward like they do for lady's or did you straddle them right down the middle?

BTW, my Sugar Daddys are 153s... I'm 5'4 and under the 120 mark. I haven't ridden them yet, but I have had lots of wet dreams about them.

i have the sugar daddy/freeride setup and mounted them on the suggested mounting point for alpine. I wouldn't move them back, and i definitely would not move them forward. overall i love these skis, but there are times i wish i had gone longer. So shortening up the tip would be terrible, at least for me.

and for skier reference (and also to answer previous question) i am 5'5" with some junk in the trunk and doctors have also told me i have large bones (for some people it's not just an excuse, lol, so some pople just have different frame sizes regardless of height) but have also been skiing since age 3, spent a few years racing in college, and now ski close to 100 days per year in UT. when i was about 13 or 14 i was skiing on 185 K2 KVCs (think glen plake's neon pink and white skis in the 80s) on the east coast, and around 17 or 18 was on a 188 volkl P30 SL (older straight slalom type ski) so initially coming down to anything under 180 was super weird, but these days i find i like a 175-ish the best.

169 K2 Seth Pistols with Look Pivot 120's

The husband says I have too much overlap with my in-bounds skis, but I agree to disagree.

Uphill: 165 Pocket Rockets with Naxos
EC Cruiser: 170 Nordica Ignitions with 997's (super fun ski, btw)
Groomers/Gaping: Rossignol T-Power with eagle-like Talons/ Volkl P30's

I have to admit that I'm still searching for my "Mr. Right" ski even though I do enjoy skiing on every pair in my quiver. I think I may have started off a little too short when I started skiing the gnar with mb about 2.5 years ago. I'd really like to add a pair of 176 Legend Pros to the mix.

These are not my favorite skis, although they are set up as my touring skis...for now. It's probably because I got them too short (167), but they seem really squirrely to me. Not smooth at all. But the funny thing is, all my other skis at that length are a lot more fun and similar width. I think they just have too much sidecut for my taste. But I know others like lhs love theirs. Definitely demo first...a few different lengths! Good luck!

I love my Gotamas (183), and probably skied those most often last year. But I bought the 167 phat luvs to have something "skinny" and easy to ski when my knees aren't feeling their best (but not groomer specific skis). (I'm a 4 knee surgery veteran). I will say it takes a few minutes to remember what I'm skiing on as far as sidecut goes (kindof like that first turn back on alpines after tele where I slam my shin into my boot), but both work well in different situations. It's basically whether I want to carve turns by just tipping the ski on edge or be able to break the ski loose easier.

I'm planning to replace a pair of phat luvs with a pair of 177 Auras this year. But I think they'll be relatively similar - light and pretty big sidecut. And I'm debating maybe making the 167 phat luvs my touring skis and selling the 174s... easier to kick turn, lighter, etc. The phat luvs I have as my touring setup do feel squirrely, but I haven't skied anything mounted with touring bindings that doesn't feel squirrely to me.

Ya...I can definitely see where you're coming from. Wow...I could see myself going there in the future...I'm definitely going to have some knee problems...hoping to avoid this with some good exercises.

Remember to do balance work as well as strength work. And probably most important - learn to listen to your body and know when to quit.

My first knee injury was when I still felt fairly indestructable. I ran a lot, I lifted weights, and am naturally flexible but didn't do any balance work. And I tended to try and make wild recoveries if I was off balance - didn't really realize the consequences at the time. Now - if I'm falling backwards or in a bad position for my knee (unless it's over a cliff band or something), I'll let myself fall and save my knees. And I also learned not to go ski bumps first thing in the morning when I'm stiff and sore and can barely walk from skiing too many early season days in a row... :rolleyes:

I love the Sweet Fat Thangs. Skied on them at Mammoth from late March to mid May. The bindings are Marker with the wide break kit. They are perfect on everything but hard pack/ice.

I bought 167 phat luvs last year and put freerides on em.
(I'm a little girl - 5'2" 125lbs)
I'd heard rumors that they were a good all-around ski, and I definitely don't agree - they're squirrely and no fun when conditions are remotely firm/icy.
BUT in powder they are just perfect - light, quick, easy to turn, great floatation, etc. I just love em in the pow. And I like em for touring cause they're light and short. But definitely a quiver ski, not your all 'round solution.

thanks Lcoyote - I think mine will end up with markers too - handmedowns from SkiingBear - he put them on his BROs last year, and has walked out of them 3 times...so he hates them & is replacing them, with the hopes that i won't walk out of them as easily - i'm obviously lighter & don't ski nearly as hard as he does.

re: the PHat Luvs as touring skis - love the lightness, quick turns in POW, HATE them in chunder (word of the week) and otherwise manky snow... but my lack of technical skills factors in a little....

Bryce Kellogg has now been on my 174's twice, and loves them compared to hers, same Phats in 164 or 167 i think...which she hated because they were so 'squirelly' - so length choice may very well play a factor in how they handle, and of course is going to vary skier to skier.

Apparently I'm weird. I actually think phat luvs carve on icy(*) groomers really well.

*obviously on Alta ice not EC ice... And with alpine bindings, not freerides.

In crud, a bigger longer ski is nice though.

And FWIW, I removed the toe shims on my freerides, which makes the ramp angle somewhat more normal, but I still just feel... unstable compared to alpine bindings. I'm half tempted to try some naxos to see if they're any better, but I just keep switching touring setups and nothing ever feels right. (It can't be the skis, because two of my AT setups were skis that I liked with alpine bindings). On groomed, I'm actually more comfortable on tele gear than AT gear. Unfortunately my tele skills in crud or other non-perfect snow are basically nonexistent.

Also depends on the size of the turn you're wanting to make. You should have seen me trying to carve short radius turns as Gordy requested on a steep icy groomer on Gotamas during last years maggot camp. (mind you I can crank out short radius turns on even somewhat decent snow - on ice - not happening). They're fine on ice as long as your idea of a turn is a weaving straightline. And the phat luvs are great as long as you're really turning. When someone makes a ski that intuitively changes sidecut to match what I feel like doing from moment to moment, I'll be all set.

I doubt if Naxo's would feel any better. I finally quit even skiing my AT setup inbounds because I never felt I had control on the Naxo's when trying to ski anything other than bc powder. It just feels like you are up really high off the ski on Naxos, but not in the way lifters on bindings feel.

Feels great to know those 180 CMHs have gone to a good home. Did they met expectations when viewed in daylight rather than around a bonfire? I hope to get chance to ski with them and you guys some time soon.

Beyond expectations, you must have gotten the pick of the litter from mtnlion.

Only problem is my debate to mount them with freerides or the dynafits. I have found some 180 Snow Rangers, so I am leaning towards freerides on the CMH's and Dynafits on the Rangers.

We will be down to Crystal, have yet to ski there.
