Has anyone tried the Big Sky Mountain Products mohair mix skins?
A bit cheaper than others. I had some of their nylon skins years ago and the glue was great. It looks like they use a Contour tail hook which I really like. The tip hook being attached by just fold index over skin and rivets is a touch old school compared to some like G3 but probably fine.

the SS loop with the skin folded over & stuck to itself is the best IME becuz it gives any skin a huge range of adjustment SO with a simple tip loop I can make a set of skins fit a 190 or a 159 cm ski IMEQuote:

G3s are on sale for like $70 US right now, kinda hard to pass up. I need to order some for the wife, but have only ever used Pomocas. $70 worth it?
You couldn't pay me to use G3 skins anymore. They've got everyone beat on attachment systems, but holy fuck that glue is still hot garbage. Let us know how they do if you go for the $70 ones.
get a tube of gold label with the 70 $ skins, my G3 skins were redone with gold label so they have BD glue
i hear this about g3 skins all the time and my partner had issues with a very old set of splitboard skins. i really liked the three sets of g3s ive had. and i also have three sets of pomoca pinks and another three race skins. i find the glue on the g3 minimists stickier than pomoca, which i dont love for a single day out but theyre totally fine. i really find they shine in colder temps and longer days/multiple days where the pomocas start to not stick as well and the g3s are less maintenance on the skintrack. just thought id add that to balance the perspectives a bit. also, as said before, attachments i much prefer to pomoca plastic tail clips.

It's fashionable to hate on G3 skins but I've had Pomoca and BD skin glue fail prematurely on me in the last couple years (both warrantied in under a year of use). If it's "buy the G3 or don't tour" definitely buy the G3.Quote:

I'm using a pair on my widest skis, 118mm waist. It was troublesome getting them off so I used the paper sack-iron to remove just a little glue. Then ironed with parchment paper to smooth out.
Easier release and I have another 10 days on um. The glue is patterned on the base, not full coverage, interesting concept that seems to work without adding tape down the middle.
Tail hook is a plus. Good grip and glide. No glue migration after a season.
btw this is a good time to re-glue before ski season when you wana ski
cuz its a job best done out side when it not too cold as opposed to the minus a bunch temps
you can probably source the glue before the season so buy a couple of tubes
end of season it will be out of stock so forget it
On a hut trip this weekend, and looking at all the new skins that others were using, I realized that my maybe 10 year old skins (BD glidelight? the orange ones), though they still work, might be ready for replacement. Seemed like new skins might weigh half as much AND glide better. But I know nothing about what is good out there, the last time I bought skins it was pretty much just BD (and G3 but everyone said those sucked).
So, what are the brands/models/styles? Are some to be avoided? How are the tip/tail attachments?
Even though everyone hates g3 skins and have their own horror stories about glue failures, I've had very good experiences with their momix "glide" skins over the past 4 seasons. Haven't had any glue failures (unlike my partners' pomoca skins leaving glue all over their bases), tail clips never fall off, and snow creep at the tips is minimal when I use the alpinist+ model with the plastic tips. well the climbing skin is a product you use by walking on so IMO as of late skin makers may have gone as light as they can until shit starts to break
G3 glue and actualy every glue will suck so I just reglue with goldlabel and I always stock a couple tubes, I'm
not a glueless fan cuz what do you do when it fails, i've tried regluing over it which didnt work, I abandoned the idea ??
the G3 tip hooks can really limit what a skin will fit on IME and they are not all that light
pomocas were pretty light when i was weighing all this stuff
I do like the G3 or BD tail leashes with a simple SS tip loop
I just replaced my 10 year old BD nylons with G3 Craft Glides. IMO they’re everything a skin should be, simple tip attachment, no rip strip in the middle, simple tail attachment, and cheap. I switched to a mix skin because of glide and packability over the nylons. We’ll see what the glue does, but I always have a tube on hand and will bring one on trips just in case. I don’t have a lot of trust in G3 yet but have been impressed with limited time on the new Craft skins so far
Can confirm, new G3 stuff is pretty hard to beat. The substrate is not as flexible as pomoca, so its harder to fold, but its about as thin.Quote:

Just bought a pair of Pomoca Climb Pro S Glide skins (turquoise ones). In the box were the skins with tip and tail hardware attached, trim tool, storage bag. Also in the box is what seems to be an extra tip loop that is unfinished metal, and a white cloth that looks like something you would get with sunglasses. There is no explanation for how you are supposed to use these last two items or what they are for, and nothing I can find on the website. Anyone know?

It's a washable bum wipe with holder.
The Pomoca cloth is to wipe your ski base dry because moisture is known to ruin the glue. By ruin, meaning, glue residue sticks on your bases.
After regluing 4 sets of Pomocas in fall 2023, set 1 started leaving residue on bases after day 4. Set 2 is leaving residue on bases after day 11. This happens near tip and/or tail where snow works in, wets glue, then glue residue occurs on bases (usually do 3-6 ski/skin transitions per day). Sets 3 and 4 haven't been used yet.
I think I'm going to back to try BD. Anyone have reports of glue working, in recent years, for a full season without leaving residue on base and if so, which brand?

The more skins I try, and the more I read, the more I think glide depends a lot on snow conditions, and perhaps skis too.
What is fast in one type of snow, might not be in another. Kind of makes sense. Glide wax comes in many different kinds for different snow too.
The old bd get fast as they age and wear out. Mine are in their prime right now.
I had a pair of the old solid orange BD's that would glide like a champ and grip as well. Trouble was that they weighed about 100g per skin more than my Colltex's (and the glue finally shit the bed) so they went down the road. I'll be trying out some Contour Guide mohairs as soon as it snows. Will report
I had the same experience with my solid orange BD skins. They broke in so nice and had great glide but they were bulky and heavy. I've generally stuck with BD skins, mostly GlideLite mixed skins. One pair had bad glue that left a film on my base (about 5 years ago) but the rest have been consistently average and generally reliable.
I took a chance on a nice deal on some Montana montamix adrenaline skins and have had them out a couple times this season. They are nylon/mohair mix and have a glueless adhesive. The glueless adhesive is more sticky than other glueless I've used (contour, high trails), but still less sticky than BD or G3. Sticky enough that I'm surprised they are glueless. Glide is fine, not as good as pure mohair. In terms of grip and glide they are comparable to the contour hybrid mix skins. Pretty light and packable, more so than the contours. I'll put them on the scale later. They came with skin savers/screens for storage. I refuse to use those while touring, and the skins still separate easily enough.
I haven't seen much chatter out there on these, so here's a data point. So far, so good!
