[QUOTE=AlpenChronicHabitual;4681999]For just about all the reasons you mention I am considering the L.
For what I want to do the air cooled is fine, I like the way it makes power and it's very easy to service.
I will be making a few minor tweaks that are more in line with the "R" air cooled model however.
As far as the suspension is concerned, for gravel forest service roads, there is plenty to work with both from a stock and a donor perspective.
I know what you mean though...
I roll an XC-W and it's heads and tails better on dirt than any XR variant.
My current bike is an 07 300 XC-W, which I plated. It gets me by for riding into some town for gas, but all I have is a non DOT head light and a rear brake light. No horn, signals or DOT tires. basically a full on dirt bike which I squeaked by inspections
I had an XR-400, which is about the only bike I regret selling. That thing was indestructible and had no radiators to bend or rupture. It wore you out kickstarting it if you laid it down though. If it wasn't for the hard starting when flooded, it would be the perfect loaner/beginner bike. The same bike with electric start would be pretty sweet.
