thanks for the reminder on Forty Creek. Even the basic stuff is pretty damn good at a great price point.

Or you could try and find a bottle of this ish...Attachment 173551
If you like it smokey and peaty, this stuff is pretty good:

To the OP; optimal progression of the palate for distilled spirits are based on the complements to the food and lifestyle around each particular drink, the world over. This is my own notion, but I also believe it is the correct answer.
I'll not assume anything about you personally, but I will say if your palate at the moment cannot partake in whiskey, the progression might be a fun road wrought with lots and lots of BBQ, bitches and beer......FYI.
If one needs to learn to like whiskey they are not ready for it. A palate needs to age, just like the whiskey.
Milk
Apple juice
Coke
Beer
Wine
Whiskey
Prune juice.
I'm about ready for the prune juice.
Mmm... love me some Stranahan's. It ain't cheap, but damn is it good. Amazingly, I could find it Bozeman, haven't yet been able to locate it here in Portland.
I'm ahead of the curve then. My palate only just on board with whiskey and quickly, Scotch. The latest offender in Balvenie 12 year.

Dam stuff is still sold out everywhere. I am really interested to try it now, just to see how it compares. Worst case, I can trickle it over some Cappuccino ice cream as a desert.
And then there was this recent interview with a skeptic on CBC radio. They have a 'listen' feed and it is a very enjoyable interview.
Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye 'far from' best in world, says Calgary whisky expert

OK - so anyone actually tried it apart from wicked_sick? Is it worth trying to get somewhere?
As for blended Whisky, I really found this comment interesting:

Buy CC dark horse, "high end" cheap Canadian whiskey but actually very good.
Forty creek is killer, funny that's it's from my home town, found it in really good bars across the us and Canada. Winery went whiskey and good product sealed the deal. Great boost to a town of 20k in bf no where southern onterrible

Whoa. It doesn't seem to be that popular in New Mexico. I took this today in ABQ:

Picked up a fifth to see what all the noise is about.

My go to is Monkey Shoulder, blend of 3 single malts, easy drinking on its own. Has some sweeter notes vs peat or smoke. Mixes well too.
Darn Canuckers buying all this up. There is not a single bottle in all of BC as of this moment.
Holiday Hope? Yes. Buy a better whisky at a better price!

Apparently, the best he has ever tasted and virtually unknown in the high-nose swish-swallow circles.
In an ugly bottle, no less!
The hype is a funny thing. It's frustrating when you don't get to try a whiskey that interests you, especially when you suspect that it's because of collector geeks.
FWIW, IMO the CR Northern Harvest rye is good, and a definite good buy at $26, but not worth the hype prices at all.
My holiday self-treat bottle this year is Masterson's Rye. That rum howler guy didn't seem to like it as much as the CR NH, but I think it's much, much better. I'm going to wait until noon.
Sniped a couple bottles of the Northern Harvest Rye,,, not bad for a $30 whiskey, But Nikko (sp) Japanese whiskeys are great as well especially if peat is not your thing. CC 100% rye is also a fine rye at at cheap price point
This thread is fucking stupid, I know 18 year old girls that drink warm bourbon out of the flask in my back pocket.
Appreciating good stuff is all well and fine but the title is saying you're too fucking dainty to drink whiskey? wtf.
I love whiskey. Mostly protestant Irish on the shelf, but scotch and bourbon are always welcome. But for some reason, a single sip of Canadian rye will give me the worst hangover. Like the taste, but the after effect kills any favourable memory. FWIW the crown royal is too sweet for me; Wisers seemed more balanced for a production whiskey. So I guess I am lucky to miss the CR hype.
First time trying this:
It is very nice.Quote:
1 serving:
2 oz bourbon whiskey (I used Rye)
1 oz triple sec
1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
Pour the whiskey, triple sec and lemon juice into a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes. Shake well, strain into a chilled cocktail glass, and serve.
Tried Johny Walker Swing last night. Smoother than the Knob Creek I had earlier, but also not quite as flavorful.
