Some dentists (The DPS/Yeti owners on here can speak to this im sure) will bump your ass at the 10minute mark and/or charge you for the visit. You know what i mean, though. Lots of situations where you are in a legitimate rush and being delayed a minute or two is actually a pretty big deal- something i try to remember when people are driving like crazy lunatics.

Nope. Some years ago I found myself behind a horse trailer. For a while. After the guy practically jack-knifed it to get around one hairpin turn, my blood pressure was up. Lots of WTF, why can't he pull over stuff. That's about when I started to estimate how much time I'd spent following bicycles over the years. Finished and checked the clock and it was about half of what I'd spent behind the horse trailer. I think about 20 minutes later there was an oddity in the road and I got around. Something like an interior corner that provided an extra long sightline, maybe, I don't recall now. Anyway, there was plenty of time to let the initial adrenaline surge wear off.

How fast were you intending to essay those hairpin curves tight enough to jack a horse trailer? Were you on your dusty dirt bike?

I was driving a sweet, sweet wagon. Obv. Luckily we were ascending so the horse smell only had to compete with diesel and not brake pads.

Unlike a bike, downshifting a vehicle [or dirtbike] transmission will save a lot of brakes on long descents.
Uphill's same as your bike, except your engine and tranny and driveline are much happier with higher RPMs than with you lugging it.

I've heard that can be critical. Happily, my sweet, sweet wagon outran that trailer before the top and I didn't have a chance to observe the substandard brake pad management of that driver.

Full disclosure: I was being hyperbolic about the extra 20 minutes part. Turns out the whole thing lasted 8 minutes. Funny how the mind plays tricks.

Should I picture a 6-horse slant load gooseneck with a big ol' dressing room? Or one of those stock trailers they used to tow saddled horses behind Pontiacs back in the days when cowboys wore highwater jeans?

Was this in Hurricane? Or the Salt River Canyon? I got behind some spud haulers on Cabbage Leaf one time, but they done a fine job. So many questions...

Tline had a cyclist fatality yesterday too on Timberline Road — collision w/ car somehow
Haven’t seen any news on it. Heard from a friend on the hill & Tline’s FB page confirms the event

There was a killing in Reno a couple of weeks ago too. Driver ran a stop sign and popo are "investigating". I doubt charges will even be filed.

There’s a guy that rides around our village on an adult tricycle while strapped.

As a cyclist who avoids pavement, this thread is a great example of the 1% (maybe 5%) of d-bag entitled cyclists who are perpetually looking for a confrontation with motorists. That said, when your ethically riding on the shoulder, have trucks pass you at 65+mph feet away on an otherwise empty road gets cumulatively frustrating and certainly turns an otherwise mellow person into a defensive rage master. Having your life threatened multiple times per day by motorists too impatient to take a few seconds to slow down and be courteous gets pretty old.

I live in rural Montana and just ride gravel, don’t see anybody typically. If I’m on a shoulder-less rural road sometimes I just stand in the ditch and let trucks go by if the road has more than one car, totally not worth it testing some wanna-be rancher with big tires and aftermarket exhaust.

Sad news out of Timberline/ski bowl. Ski Bowls mtn manager killed descending Timberline Rd. Those that know that turn could question how one could not see a cyclist descending as they make a left turn. There’s a good 1/8-1/4mi line of sight. Comment section of the article indicates the driver may have a history of poor driving skills.

When 99.999% of roadway traffic is car sized, that is what motorists look out for. Its a trick of the brain to only see things you are looking for and to ignore things you arent. Its the reason why no one sees the gorilla when asked to count the number of basketball passes in that one video. Add in old age and all the deficiencies that come with it (reaction time, eyesight, cognitive decline, etc) and tragic things become a lot more likely.

Im not a huge fan of autopilot/assisted driving in cars, but this is one area where it could be hugely beneficial as the software should be able to see and account for different sized roadway obstacles (motorcyclists, cyclists, pedestrians, etc) much, much better than the human brain.

Was just speaking with an acquaintance who is starting to ride on the road and he mentioned if there was a need for lights. I was adamant about the need for them day and night. Why not? It may not save you, but it cannot hurt.

Insistent road bikers live for it, else they wouldn't make a point of riding on 65mph roads, demanding that trucks slow down and express courtesy.

i see people riding on roads here in the people's republic of vermont that I would not ride on - yes you should be able to ride them but why take the risk. it's fucking crazy

Guessing the victim and videographer were riding two abreast, which is legal in OR so long as they aren’t impeding traffic. There was plenty of room and sight line to pass regardless of double yellow, like the pickup did.

Comments in the thread indicate it happened in Tennessee and driver went to jail. Despite driving a Volvo. I thought they were safe cars

The park service has "bike route" signs posted at regular intervals along the entire length of the parkway. These signs encourage motorists to "share the road" with cyclists.
