The Dynastar Thread

Have 4 days on new-to-me- but used 184cm 2012 LP105 and gotta say I love this ski! It knifes wind buff and then rails groomers on the run out. No speed limit that I have found. Gotta be charging. They don't want to lolligag and I have found you do have to drive the tips or they wander just a touch, but for me it's a perfect everyday ski. Just an awesome Mammoth ski.

Those wood sidewalls don't look like they are gonna last unfortunately Didn't manufacturers learn that lesson yet? I think it was the old Sanouk that also had them and didn't hold up either.

Agreed with all of that (especially the delicate wood sidewalls). The more time I spend on that ski, the more I love it.

I wish someone still made a ski like that in a sub 190 length.

So far my problem has been that relatively minor impacts near the edge will completely explode the sidewall. The wood doesn't offer much structural support.

They are pretty though. And that's a good call - I'll start oiling them. Should at least keep them from drying out and cracking.

Same here: I have a spot that doesn't look like it hit anything, but the sidewall seems to be blowing up :(

A but of surgery and a bunch of epoxy seems to be holding up on mine. It's not as pretty though.

Looks like the MFree 99 would be very similar to the 108 in taper/rocker and construction with similar dimensions to the MPro 99. A hair more sidecut though(17m in the 179cm-maybe around 19m in the 185?) and assuming more forward mount like the MFree 108.
Heard from a couple smaller skis who have been on the 179cm that it’s a fun as you’d assume in bumps and trees. Guess it comes in 171, 179 and 185cm with 128/99/120 dimensions.

I tried the MFree 108 in 182/192cm in late February of 2020 at Alta so if they follow the same trend maybe the MFree 99 out soon?

Mounted a set of mfree108 for the wife to accompany her cham 107hm that she raked through the rocks last week. She's stoked. Something that releases in the tails but still skiis like a dstar should be just the ticket.

I think the 99 should be a great hangover/ski with the wife ski. Looking forward to getting on a pair.

Just been out once for a quick couple of laps with the LP pros. Hard to compare the two, my xxls are so knackered they don't really have any camber anymore. Lps feel a lot turnier, with an actual radius, whereas the xxls just used to carry on going straight if I tipped them over onto the edges. But that's down to shape difference and rocker. Lps need to be driven pushed right into the tips, the xxls are just super slarvey when kicking out the heels. But I reckon that's just down to how beat they are. This was on my experience from the lp 105 when it came out in 2012. It is stable, gets on plane faster than a xxl. Likes to turn easier. You can be lazier on it. A xxl likes to dive in over a foot of pow. The 105 gets on planes like a cham minus the super stiff tail. Like above my xxls have seen a ton od use and are still one of my favorite skis for the Rockies

That's about my take as well. Lp105 has 95% of the xxl's dampness and crud busting abilities, but is easier to ski and is considerably better in deep snow.

LP 105. Best. Ski. Evar.

The 105’s radius is 27M and wasn’t the XXL like 34/41 depending on length? The XXL was awesome in deep snow IMO...had both the 186 and 194 and currently have the 105 in a 184 and 192. Two distinct personalities but the one thing they share is no speed limit.

My first time on Dynastar since 4x4 Bigs circa 2000ish. I was impressed, could not believe the performance in hard conditions. Must be fun in the pow!

They are fun in the pow. They're fun in just about anything.

I usually ski charger type skis in 186-196 lengths. Renegades for pow (186 and 96 depending on day), Cochise, QST 106 and devestators are my more every day ski, have some msp 99 I almost never ski. Plus some other random shit. Quiver is absurdly huge, but I’ve been thinking about the 182 mfree 108 for an easy skiing ski. There’s just some days when I’m feeling a little beat up that a softer ski with camber might really help out. I can get them pretty cheap. Will I be disappointed in the shorter length?
