One more data point on the tuning:
I got the my R dimes and could definitely see the potential but didn't immediately click with them. Posted in here something to that effect.
Marshal (unsolicited) called me and offered for me to ship the skis back (at his expense) and he'd re-tune them with his butter tune. This was just ridiculously above and beyond customer service. I declined, because really I just needed to fiddle around with detuning them a bit more (I'd already detuned a bit, but was being cautious to not overshoot).
Somewhere in a non heritage lab thread, Marshall commented about his personal tuning preferences. The short version is that he likes his fatter, rockered skis to be quite sharp. That lined up with how my R's were, but didn't line up with my personal preferences. I like my fatter skis to match my personality; kinda dull. So I detuned the shit out of them and now they're awesome.
TLDR: my R110's arrived quite sharp - sharper than any of my praxis. The tune was great (i.e. consistent, polished, bases flat, etc.), just not my personal preference. But it's easier to make a sharp ski dull than a dull ski sharp, so I'm happy. It just took a little experimenting to get them dialed to my liking.

Glad he changed to free factory tune or pay the man for human precision.
Initially his idea seemed to be every ski needs to be perfect. But that’s unpossible as production ramps up
That’s three hundred thirty seven point five hours of tuning at forty-five minutes per pair.
Damn. Now I feel like we robbed him. Definitely gonna pay for his tune on my next ski. Was gonna already, but still…

Maybe I've just been lucky, but every ski I have received from HL has had a stellar tune out of the wrapper. Top shelf. Haven't had to touch a single one.
Yup HL skis cost a bit more. Ya they may need a tune.
But they are worth it.
I’ll just add here that Marshal was epic in his customer service when I got my tune done at Profile in Whistler. Ya that tune changed the FR One Ten ski to ski way better. And by way better I mean better than my Hojis and Ravens which I frickin loved.
Just re-read all of Gaijin’s posts about the R One Ten. He gets it.

I wish I could post pics because I just skied dirty, wild, fresh snow on my favorite local forest line. And then I mingled with the GS race course, laying trenches next to their gates on fairly firm, but smooth groomers.
You guys, this ski absolutely shreds. I’m 20-30 days in. My legs are awake. I found myself absolutely maching today to the point that I had to shut it down because I couldn’t see that far ahead of me.
You heard it here first. Cue the cult. Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new cult ski.
I’m claiming it. The ROneTen is a cult ski.
You’re gonna regret missing out on this one.

Well - Fulfilled one of the use cases for the FR110 today.
A couple inches of fresh with my son. Mostly tracked out, but a few untouched turns. Popping in and out of the woods. Mostly chasing him around.
They were perfect. Exactly what I was looking for.
Turn when, where, and how you want.
Milk a few turns in the trees, let them run straight when it gets too tight, hit a ramp - pretend you can fly, then slash the tails out to check your speed before rolling your ankles and locking them on edge.
Smooth, stable, and calm - yet ultra-maneuverable. Quite the rare combination.
I'm thoroughly impressed.
^this sums it up. Plus, it smooths out inconsistent variable snow. And all while taking minimal input and little effort. This ski can be finessed.Quote:

Again - I want to express my apology to MO on starting a debate on tuning. I did not mean for me being tired of tuning skis to become a topic on HL skis tuning in general - the two are not the same. As for their price - MO is not responsible for the shipping and taxes making very affordable skis slightly more expensive - the value for money proposition is still through the roof. As for MO tuning lots of skis by hand - well, good on him for doing so and for tweaking the model so that it is an optional upgrade to make it worth his time. Figuring out what parts of the job that one needs to do and what is extra is part of the gig I guess. Re FR110s ( to bring things back on topic) - I had them out for a couple of runs today in what can best be described as prime FR110 conditions. My god how they just make tracked out pow so easy to ski. I am still not quite sure if an AM110 + FR110 combo, am AM110 or a SF110 one ski daily is the more appropriate option. And yes, I bought the FR110 back from the mag I sold them to a while back - riding the FR120STs made me ponder if I had done a terrible mistake in selling them. ;)
Kid-Kapow: go back a page and reread what you have typed up. You stated you were irritated that you needed to do some tuning to your new HL bc110 despite the fact YOU ordered them without the butter tune that Marshal offers. Then you complain about the new graphics. Then you go on to complain about the cost of HL skis despite the fact you are fully aware of the import fees/duties/taxes your home country charges for imports. Marshal can’t win with you in terms of making you happy.
I’ve spent a shit ton on skis.
In my mind, when HL skis are compared to any other ski brand (and I’ve owned a few) the cost seems cheap once you’ve skied them.
Why? cause they feel so good when you ski them and that is what we are buying. Do the math….even when you consider the ski price, the potential extra tune, andany duties/taxes they are a bargain. Cause four - five HL skis will easily replace your ten ski quiver.

It’s normal for manufacturers to measure straight tape, the material length on them is one nine two. Ktwo is an exception, maybe that changed. Yes the R-Dimes delete the Mfree for me. The Mfree is still a great ski tho and it will still be in my quiver.

upinsmoke - damned if I do, damned if I don't I guess. A ski should not require an added tune up service to ski well. So yeah, I FULLY STAND BY my expression that I would be pissed if my pair would need to be completely retuned to ski well. If you think that level of tune is ok - fine by me - you do you. If you (or anybody else) makes the leap from my statement to being a general criticism of HL's tunes, well - that is your interpretation. And yes, it was that magical leap of faith caused by seemingly poor reading skills on here that I was apologizing for - not my actual take. As for the graphics - if your reading comprehension kicks in you would understand that I am saying that my first take on the graphic might have been mistaken. And yeah, when MO sent me the graphic a while back (after I mentioned that the original BC110 graphic was fucking atrocious in the thread - which it was from my point of view) my initial take was to provide an alternative take on it. You know, voiced an opinion and made a suggestion. Alas - I did not buy them for their graphic - I bought them for their shape and construction. And so what if anybody dislikes the graphics - aren't we allowed to? Must every HL thread only mention adoration and positives? Are we so shrill that nuance and alternative takes is not allowed? As for the price - the customs fees, exchange rates and shipping fees add up. And yeah, I was aware of the up front. They still ended up being more than I thought they would be. Oh well. I invested in the skis over buying two pairs of most major manufactures skis on sale locally. And yeah - AM110 187s are sold out.
so yeah upinsmoke - having bought AM100s, FR110s, FR120ST and BC110s - there is no winning for MO with me... Not when I actually try to provide both positives and negtives, and am willing to admit it when my takes/opinions change. (sorry on TGR's behalf that my posts have no paragraphs - it is due to the forum)
