Saw Dweezil last night, has anyone ever seen his name on one of those stupid best guitar player lists? I haven’t and he’s easily top ten for me, seen him like six times now. Effortless fucking gangster on the fret board, played Franks SG most of the night and a little bit with his sunburst Les Paul from the Shut Up And Play Your Guitar sessions. Current road band is a 10+, highly recommended show.

I would have loved to see that particular PJ show because their merch poster was done by a kick-ass artist from the area, Cyrus Walker. We have tix to see Jane's is Reno. Had to do it since it's all the guys AND Love and Rockets opening. I haven't seen them LaR since, IDK maybe '87? 88? at Sand Diego State University.
My wife snagged the plague from the Billy Strings show in Berkeley. Either the Vid or general Wook fever...

Buzzworthy and meatdrink9 hanging out with Rob Garza after the Thievery Corporation show last night in Ogden.
Saw Marky Ramone and his band Blitzkrieg playing the Ramones classics last night at the Minnesota State Fair. What a blast! 72 years old and still drums like a young punk.

Black Crowes coming to SLC in October, as is All them Witches. You guys get all the shows.
I've seen the Crowes several times and most of the shows were phenomenal. But I'd kill to see ATW. My BIL and other friend arrive for an elk hunt the day before, else I'd be down there. Anyone planning on going?

BC are coming to SLT in Dec.
Giving the show a serious contemplation…only thing holding me back is that I saw The Chris Robinson Brotherhood several years ago and thought they were weak (they had a really wonky keyboardist whose playing, specifically the tone of his keys, ruined the show for me…)
Also, here’s a newer ATW live on KEXP.

Def adding them to the “need to see live” list.
Hey TRF, you might wanna check out WAND. They deliver some similar psychedelicness:

MDOU MOCTAR is on tour.
Highly recommend seeing him and his band live if they swing through your neck of the woods.

Pantera and Metallica last night. Pretty fun - Anselmo sounds his age, but can still work a crowd. Had a lot of fun in the Pantera set.
Hetfield sounded impressively good, but Metallica as a whole seemed a little sloppy, especially Kirk. They also played a bunch of their new stuff, which pretty clearly no one particularly cared about. Having Metallica marketing their Metallica branded whiskey on the jumbotrons between sets was a bit off putting. But all in all, still a great show.
Mammoth was the first opener. Hadn't really heard them before, but it's Eddie Van Halen's kid. He's a good player and singer - the whole band sounded really good. The music is fairly uninteresting generic nu metal though. Hopefully they can find a more interesting sound, because there's some talent there.

Actually gonna catch All Them Witches at bumbershoot tomorrow. Also King Buffalo, Courtney Barnett, Marc Rebillet, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, and a couple others that should be fun.

Bumbershoot in Seattle yesterday.
All Them Witches were really good. Would love to see them in a better venue. They were the best "traditional" set that I saw.

King Buffalo had sound issues. Another band I'd like to see in a smaller, indoor venue.
Courtney Barnett killed it. She sounded great. She's a fantastic guitarist.
Kurt Vile was meh. I'm not really the biggest fan of his music, but the show was kinda low energy.
Kim Gordon is still banking on being cool from her sonic youth days. It's not enough to make up for her music.
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are entirely entertaining. The Paula Abdul / Straight Up cover was hilarious.

Marc Rebillet closing things down was maybe the highlight of the night. That dude has ridiculous energy. He dragged a couple 11 year olds up on stage and built a whole (pretty good) song around the kids screaming gibberish into the mic. Definitely worth seeing that guy if you get the chance.

If you dig Mdou, you’ll probably dig Bombino (I missed him earlier this year when he swung through the West Coast…
http://www.bombinomusic.com/video
Also Etran De L’air
https://groundcontroltouring.com/artists/etran-de-lair
Both are doing some East Coast shows this month…
Had an interesting concert week. Started with seeing Journey at a Tech conference. Never would have paid to see Journey but brought back a lot of memories from my youth and they crushed it. Close your eyes and you swear its Steve Perry singing.

Got home and went to see X on their farewell tour. This was bucket list for me. Before the show, most of the fans were grey hairs 10+ years older than me. Thought it was going to be super mellow, but a high energy crowd. Mrs Dawg's first punk show and closest she has been to a mosh pit - very entertaining. :D Interesting to watch Billy Zoom totally shred, while sitting and chewing gum the entire show.

9/11/24 @ The Holland Project, Reno, Nevada
(https://hollandreno.org/)
I’ve mentioned The Holland Project before. It’s a small, all ages non-profit venue located at the south end of the Midtown District in Reno. When you attend one of their shows, it’s like seeing a band in your Dad’s converted garage. And since it’s all ages, there’s no alcohol, which means no drunken idiots sloshing beer on your shoes. Also, for some strange reason it’s the only venue I’ve been to in the past 10 years where nobody keeps their phones out for the whole show taking crappy pictures and pointless video or live posting to The Gram. If and when—which is extremely rare—somebody does bring out their phone to snap a picture, they keep it low and out of other people’s sight lines or they move to the side of the venue and take a picture without obstructing anybody else’s view. Heck, I feel dirty just taking a few pics when I am at a show. Bottomline, I really dig this venue.
At any rate, 90% of the shows held here fall into the punk or “experimental rock” pigeonhole. And 99% of the time I have never heard of any of the bands that come through. I’d say about once every 3 months or so I spend a few hours YouTubing the bands on the venue’s site calendar to see if any of them are to my liking.
In the case of Jenny Don’t and the Spurs I did a quick Google, stumbled upon a live Audiotree Session from earlier this year and after three songs I put the video on pause and bought me a ticket. I was not disappointed.
The band is a 4-piece and they are crackerjack en fuego. Drummer Buddy Weeks plays traditional grip with gusto. Lead guitarist Christopher Marks is all about the land-locked surf twang and spaghetti western swirl. Bassist Kelli Halliburton comes from that Old School rock low-end tribe akin to John Entwhistle or Bill Wyman, yet he’s also super animated with plenty of Mick Jagger like swagger. As for front woman Jenny? She shuffles, skitters, and shimmies across the stage, tosses off rock star poses with nonchalance, and has a smile that could melt the moon. In short, she’s charismatic as fuck. And she croons immaculate.
They also are a streamlined machine, beginning their short but blazing set at exactly 9:20 right after the opening act had packed their last piece of gear from the stage. Half the audience was still outside getting snacks and having a smoke break when Jenny strummed her first chord. Speaking of audience, there were only about 45 of us in the crowd, which was nice from my perspective.
Jenny and the boys dished out a non-stop 55-minute set of sizzling western hoo-haa.
Opener Blackstallion are a Reno 5-piece that had a ragged, early Pavement vibe. I liked ‘em.
Definitely recommend Jenny and her posse, though.

Every time I saw Jane’s or Porno For Pyros and they sucked was due to PF chugging red wine during the show. Pretty sure the tannins fuck up his voice; I get hoarse when I drink red wine, fwiw.
