They were nice young enthusiasts, that don't get a lot of funding.

Does a lift ride for bikes that only gets you like half the way really make that much sense though? bummer east wall never made a comeback this season as it looked nice in the north pole area still but we did have those real warm snaps with days on end of no freeze between more normal weather patterns. might go up for some laps again this weekend if I have nothing else going on, still a pretty fat base up high and Len was skiing real fun last weekend
A halfway lift bump is like having an ebike. You still gotta work for it, but its faster and you get more laps. Oh but theres no motor or weight and its cheaper.
You could also just lower the lower mountain, where they should focus on putting more trails since it melts first.
They could manage a patch on the upper for skiing, and open the bike trails for lift served on the lower. Easy to get a two sport day in at the resort! BML would be jammin.
Whistler does exactly that
My lazy ass would love a bump up to mid mountain and do some bike laps on that lower trail (and hopefully more) and then work for the downhill run from the top, or Lenawee.
The Basin is NOT Whistler haha. But when they put in the KeystoneBasin interconnect gondola they will be getting closer.

This was the scene at killington in the 90's and it was in fact jammin. I would partake.
They kind of have that at Copper in the summer. Park rats in the snow drift park at the base while others are mountain biking or hiking down.
I'll be skiing Abay tomorrow.

Man I miss spring at the Basin. To quote ZZZ, real corn in Utah is as rare as hen’s teeth. Snowbird goes to Memorial Day pretty consistently but the snow just isn’t the same and now they’re shuttling down much of the good terrain here too, like the Cirque Traverse. Also I guess it just doesn’t see the late season traffic it used to, which doesn’t help the skiability.When I lived in Summit, early-mid nineties, Pali was always open late weather permitting, and of course East Wall too. IIRC they even kept it open late season into the early aughts? Spring slushy bumps on the Pali were unbeatable. Sucks they’re shutting everything down except intermediate terrain now. It’s true the weather was more consistent back then but still. Everything is getting dumbed down to the lowest common denominator.
Well, someone died in a wet avalanche on Pali so I can’t exactly blame them for being ultra-conservative about shutting steep terrain down.Quote:

Ah never mind, found it, May of 06, brutal. I was unaware of that one. Not too surprising I guess considering some of the sloppy conditions I remember skiing up there back then. Still seems like they could open it if there are proper freezes at night but I’m not making the call up there.
The first alley slide was 20 years ago. Since then Pali stayed open past Mothers Day, conditions permitting, until about 2019 when something changed. Now it closes pretty much the same time every year, regardless of conditions.
In 2015 Pali chari/terrain closed June 1.
Someone also died on the lower East Wall shorty after the Pali slide. Pretty sure they went over the bars on a hot day, and punched in head first. I remember seeing FFL almost land at the base before being called off. I get that they are being cautious but now they take the easy route of just closing things for good on a set date instead of as the conditions warrant. They also seem to be pushing the party culture and dumbing down the terrain to accommodate.
There definitely seems to be some operational budgeting going on but the terrain off Pali did close by like 11 the day before they shut the lift down for the season so I don’t know. Seems like after a few days of no overnight freeze and warmer days that will just mean the Pali terrain is done. After that point freezes will be more on the surface with wet snow underneath.
Yeah that makes sense. multiple consecutive nights with no freeze is a red flag. Everyone's being more cautious these days too.
Gorgeous morning at the Basin. There is some wet slab slides on the upper East Wall FWIW. But coverage up there looks gooood. So does Pali.
