Ohh yeah, April usually delivers. And May is for touring.
It's far from over yet. ;-)
Think Snow.
I'm guessing the line is around 2000m at the moment.
Location = Leysin.
And be careful out there. I am seeing slides all over the place!
Snow line in Chamonix was 1700 this morning. It must have been much lower in italy until this afternoon - just driven to La Thule and back, so much snow by the roadside, but raining now.
True, we had a mega storm on the 10th April last year and were skiing woodland in the Chartroose mountains down to 1000m... but that was pretty much it. A little bit of pow above 2000m in May then it was incredibly hot again.Quote:

Now it's dumping down rain here in Chamonix town so just hoping the skies clear it should be SWEET up high tomorrow.
Hmm surprisingly silent on this side of the Atlantic these last few days.
Mini TR 3/25 ---
Skiied Les Grands Montets against my better judgement. Thought it might be good up top but shocked to get heavy, slushy snow up at the top of the Bochard (2800m)! Somehow managed to really have a good time even though the snow was absolutely horrible.
Tried to get a partner to try out the Midi in the afternoon - I think it may be nice up high there - but Idris is in a van driving some tourists around the alps and nobody else was free or wanted to make the move. So we ended up drinking beers on the town square at noon and oogling at the exposed Springtime flesh now on display - to the hottie British chick wearing the T-shit, merci beaucoup.
great conditions and a great day at SSB today...pics moved to thread:

Flew into Graz at 10am this morning with no sleep and then toured Zirbitzkogel (2376m) with the parents.
It was baking hot but there is a lot of snow out here in the East so it looks like I am going on a ski touring bonanza for the next week. On the list are Dachstein, Großvenediger and maybe Großglockner.
Also skied a nice line of the flank of Zirbitzkogel, photos to follow.
Should say yterday morning.Quote:

But I am open to suggestion.
Getting the train from Geneve to Chamonix is pretty awkward. The train does not leave from the main train station in the centre of town, but a smaller one. It's also slow - over 2 hours if I remember correctly with at least 1 and maybe 2 stops.Quote:

.....but well doable, with changes at Lausanne and Martigny. From ther direct access into Cham. Did it once and it wasn't too bad.Quote:

See you all in Engelberg (or somewhere else!).
Maggots,
It's this time of year when moisture falling out of the sky means SNOW somewhere.
That being said, it is wet as out there.
Leysin, Altitude = 1264m is the line today.
The trick is to be out there the first day the weather breaks.
Not sure when the storm plans to break, but when it does, find some.
Get it while you can, because by about 14h00, after the sun gets on it,
it might be done until the next dump.
E-berg mini might be a good place to be when this opens up.
Courage to all the maggots there now!!! Patience, you are well placed.
No shit it just changed to snow outside my window (1000m, Chamonix, 7:40 PM). Rain all day and then gradual temperature raise and snow means to me good bonding with the current layer and could be a LOT of fun even in the mid-level forests tomorrow...
What Al said about hitting things quick is dead on for this time of year.
Good news+ Hev and I would be in Cham right now except for the French train strike. After tonight in Martingy, we$ll be there mid day.
if stuck, take St Bernard Express from Martigny up to Verbier (La Chable)... ~ 20 min ride.Quote:

Let's do this AKPM style.
Dear Diary,
What a GREAT day. 50cm of light fluffy goodness. All the crowds stormed Les Grands Montets and skiied the Bochard in white-out conditions. We were more than happy to get less vertical but perfect tree skiing at another undisclosed location, with ZERO lift lines, and untracked until we were tired at 3 PM.
The sun came up later in the day though and within an hour it made a noticable difference on the snow quality... tomorrow will probably be good too, but get it quick before it turns to slop.
PS - Don't expect powder at Les Grands tomorrow. Bochard and Herse were open all day and the entire village has already been there done that.Quote:

bbirtle - Hev and I are in Cham. If you'd like any company get in touch with us through Tom. We are up at the Belvidiere in Argentierre.
Other peeps, how's thinks in La Grave, Stanton etc.? What zones are favored with theese warm temps? I'm around until the 14th looking for ideas.
pees
i'm off to La Grave this evening until 3rd. Freezing level is 2000m+, but it does go up to 3600m and is north facing so i'm hoping to find some good stuff. will post an update when i get back
3800m at Kliene Matterhorn, from which 30 min of combined effort gets you a 1500 vertical meter steep glacier descent. Or ski the West Face (500m), lift accessible, with routes from 35-55 degrees including the "Dreiselwand", and mind-blowing ambiance. Bring your skins and overnight gear and knock off the 4000m ski touring peaks which have Zermatt (or Saas Fee) as their starting point: Breithorn, Castor, Pollux, Liskamm, Monte Rosa, Stahlhorn, Rimpfishorn, Alpubel, Allalinhorn.Quote:
