Patrol is concerned about wet slides, all the exposed rock in there. Late Thursday i saw a few small ones. It should reopen soon with the cooler temps.

Yep. Still didnt open today. Black mountain got the gangbang treatment today. 6+ on SFB and multiple others on dogshit and dogleg.

Still closed today too, wonder if they did have some wet slides go causing some bad conditions into some of the lines? Narrow north skied really well today with an inch and some wind even though light went out when I got to the top and you couldn’t see any definition. Tomorrow is that day of the year for front rangers to go make fun of themselves. Hmm
They look at solar incidence on their pali station, plus snow temps and flow guages. I don't know if north fork guage spiked, but Keystone Gulch did
Seems like My Chute and other inbounds areas would have the same issues. Hopefully this storm and lower temps rectifies the situation because I need me some steep skiing.
Pretty fun day. Really nice this morning then what got scraped off skied real fast and firm between the bumps until a little more snow came and filled it back in. Still no steep gullies, patrol was definitely in there all day. Lots of blasting on east wall but visibility was so in and out I didn’t have much hope for that.
Didn’t make it up until noon today, but was skiing so well. Stashes still to be had. Good to be home for the Spring.
This definitely belongs in the dicks thread. Have some major confusion here. So it costs more money for the parking pass but day rate is same and there are overall 10ish less days that paid parking is required? I didn’t do actual math on that but seems close with Xmas to new years and the weekend before Xmas this season. So sick of this shit honestly. But the parking pass did save me like $500 this season.
So I avoided the Basin this winter on weekends. Do you need a parking pass in order to make a parking reservation? No, right?

And yes, that email was dumb as fuck for not clarifying if it applies to those of us who had a parking pass this season and will be buying full ikon instead of just Basin pass.
I decided to buy Abasin Pass instead of Ikon this season. I was able to apply the one hundred dollar discount. I did the maths and for the fifteen or so days I ski, I am better off even paying for weekend parking. I will see if I get the offer to buy the discounted parking pass earlier than the general public offer on May 20.
Last i checked, I was like $360 up on the parking pass investment. Probably do it again. Bought Ikon pass last night. Ugh. That was a tough pill to swallow. Oh well.

Today was pretty fun. Nothing steep open anymore but plenty of super smooth creamy skiing!

Kinda...no, really lame that they closed the East Wall for good. It's been below freezing for days and the snow above 12k is locked up solid. I get them closing Pali terrain/chair to save a buck but the wall is easily manageable terrain off a lift that will be open til the end. We had some rad late-May days up there back in the day.
Agreed. I used to like to hike out to Chihuahua/marjorie just to get their panties in a bunch this time of year as you basically use the north pole bootpack.

Al has always shot down the idea of lift serviced trails. But who knows now that Alterra is calling the shots?
There's a trail that paralells hwy6 down to Keystone. You combine that with the other trail from the summit you get a pretty legit 3k' decent. Better than Lenawee.
I don't see the basin ever doing lift served biking with Copper making a huge push for a big bike park in the coming years.
Copper has been talking about a bike park for a decade. Much like Keystone, prioritizing biking is mostly talk. They'll always choose anything but. Even after they paid Gravity Logic a large some to come down, walk the mountain, lay out trail, etc, they were like "orrrr we could not do that and build a roller coaster instead." Then in the following years it was "well, maybe lets just build a blue XC trail or two." Oh Copper.... and they have a great mountain for DH trails and some decent soil.
Keystone Bike Park always gets its budget stolen for non-bike stuff, and VR thinks that Vail can be their CO bike park of note despite its location. But the new Keystone COO is a biker and helped make Northstar's park a thing so lets see if they now put their money where their mouth is... starting with being a 7 day a week park instead of the only 5 day a week park.
Rumored Keystone opening June 2! I'll believe it, and be overjoyed, when I see it.

"Yes but they are already there... mostly just sitting there watching hikers and wedding guests so what is the problem?"
"Well, what if USFS gets made about more traffic to Lenawee?"
"OK seriously? We are talking half bumps up BMX, not rides to the top, and you just built a nice climbing trail which is going to make more traffic than mid mountain lift served. Keep bikers in the area by building more frontside trails."
Abasin bike park will always be stymied by the fact that they are higher altitude and run skiing late.
Keystone should build more backside trails since it is south facing and would be dry early... of course now everyone is going to have to compete with the new gondola in Idaho Springs.
As much as the current admin sucks, the USFS not moving forward with the Old Growth amendment just saved ski areas and bike parks on USFS land who would have basically been banned from building new ski/bike trails ever again. But the USFS remarkably restrictive about bike park trails... for Keystone, for Trestle, etc. Keystone has almost always been told to decommission an old trail to build a new one, or just redo an old trail. Winter Park has been told that too. Because elk... or some such BS.
