Every single pair of skis I've had mounted by a shop or bought from someone who had them mounted at a shop has had holes drilled off center by 1-2 millimeters and/or crooked. Jigs are far from precise in that regard.

Paper templates are way more precise imo, if you're patient. On top of that I make my own templates so that the binding adjustment range is useful for me (i.e I ski 25.5 boots, and I want my skis To be able to fit 25.5-27.5 boots, not 24.5-26.5 boots) for sharing and resale purposes.

Shop mounted skis often come back without the heels centered in their adjustment range anyways. I also use a drill press, good glue/epoxy, and triple check everything.

That's not even for inserts. There's no shop I'd trust doing those.

Done and done. But mounting the Gaurdians over Fritschi Freerides was a challenge. There was a sweet spot to get the desired distance from previous mounts. Next bindings will likely not be frame bindings.

Question: Just did a remount on a pair of Deathwish with Solly 916...over the past 5 years or so that I have been mounting 916's, I seem to always get a spinner on the last heel screws near tail. Workflow is 3.6 x 9mm, waterproof wood glue, drill mostly then end with posidrive by hand. All other screws and mounts for my kids skis are perfectly tight. I was thinking that maybe I need heel screws in better condition? Thoughts, ideas, help?

Left over glue on the screw threads? Not allowing a proper purchase.

Are you pushing down hard when using the screw gun to get the screw's threads to cut on the first few turns?
The heel housing sometimes forces you to drive the screws in at a slight angle because you can't get the screwdriver plumb - maybe a longer driver tip would help with driving them in straighter and eliminate spinners?

Good tip. The heel housing definitely gets in the way a bit. Next pair, I use my long posidriver by hand and focus on straightdown with MIGHT. In the meantime I just added some waterproof glue around the heel to avoid moisture penetration. Luckily, the extra middle screw on heel keeps the heel on the ski if those last two rip out...speaking from experience. :)

You could try tapping the holes first to help guide them straight in. I've also found that tapping helps prevent spinners.

I have some Look Team 4 QS jr bindings I'm about to mount on 76cm skis. The recommended jig setting for these bindings, "R", is at the 250mm bsl mark allowing the bindings to cover bsls from 205-304mm. That seems like an unnecessarily large spread for a binding setup that will likely never be accommodating a bsl over 230mm, probably less (thinking boots anywhere from 14.5 to 18.5 mondo size).

Would it be better for my little tyke's skis to use a smaller bsl length even though these are quickset bindings? I can't think why it would hurt but I'm also open to correction. thanks for any help you can offer

I was pleasantly surprised that the company selling me the bindings had an inventory mix up and had to send me the orange Atomic version instead of the Solly ones. The redish orange in the old "Great Scott" skis by Scott Andrus and Co was a near match to these Atomics! I wish they had been mounted one back.

That depends on if the ski has a metal topsheet or not. Don't tap for metal all the way down.

I have always used a larger bit for the metal versus the binding screw itself. Caveat, I have only mounted tele bindings.

However, I never tap all the way down. Curious about why you should tap all the way down?

^Most skis with metal require a 4.1mm bit. Tapping is necessary for all skis with a metal layer, and is advisable for all skis regardless of construction.
