Saw some avy photos in Mineral Basin this weekend that might be useful to y'all. Powderbirds/Snowbird Patrol dropped bombs along the ridge and set of the following.
Elevation is around 10,500-11,000. North facing. The slide lookers left ran down thorough ALL the chutes in the Bookends. Debris ended up roughly 200 yards from the base of the Mineral Chair (large creek bed between the two). Snow safety mentioned that it slid on "the ice layer 6-8 feet down" I'm guessing that's from the rain event a few weeks ago but I'm sure APD or others may chime in with more pertinent info.
Interestingly the south facing slopes must have been pretty stable because they opened some steep south chutes right at 9am but kept the north facing closed all day.

Yeah those slides in Mineral looked crazy...and BIG....surely the MLK rain event they slid on..whats most interesting is how the one past hillary step kind stepped up over the traverse when it slide...skier compaction at work there i'd imagine. Sucks that MLK layer is still pestering us.
Good amount of wind jacked snow in the typical spots.

Creamy fast snow all the way down to 210 on the shady side of the road.

A great weekend. South and west got whacked by the end of the day.

was replaced by windbuff/jacked sensitive wind drifts and variable funk crusts

pretty obvious and managable with ski cuts only entailing new storm and winddrifted snow.
Similiar results off top of west bowl nw into days.
benson & hedges a bit chaulky and widbuffed, apron variable wind jack but
lower held rippled wind waved pretty soft consistent snow
best snow/turns lower dav and nw sheltered trees
also observed an interesting chimney cap

Yeah, even the slopes that escaped yesterdays southwest winds and were skiing well early AM today got jacked by another brief wind event later on, leaving only the more sheltered slopes.
The MLK crust dates back to the middle of January, if so, then maybe some of the reports suggesting that particular threat is diminishing might be premature, although it did require explosives to trigger it. Today's avi report characterized it as breaking 6 feet deep in steep, rocky, unsupported slopes that were loaded by the strong south winds on Friday.
heard about an in bounds slide at alta today. ripped out of baldy shoulder, two people caught, zero buried. i didn't witness it, just heard about it from others. be careful out there sounds like that MLK rain crust is making its presence felt.
oh and this weekend was double D titties all up in yo grill. friday in bear trap=deepest pow i've skied all year. rest of the weekend i was treated to in bounds though i did venture into silly fork for a glory last run on sunday and boy was it glorious!

Between sun, wind and ski tracks it doesn't take long for the Wasatch Etch-a-sketch need a good shake up again.
^Great shots Jim! That Bunnels dranage is gnarley.
SLC mags what up? Im heading from the east coast this sat. Land early and planing to ride that day. How are things looking out there, any suggestions on good spots to hit for the week? Heading out with a few non mag friends and have a 5 day super pass. Hope to get blow away. Any chance of getting a tour of one the mtns while Im out there?
still some good skiing to be had out there. skied the most west, north-facing couloir (but not the perlas) in little cottonwood this morning. booter/skinner is in so get after it, monkey see monkey do. even had two monkeys, drive past us after we were done, stop, turn around, ask my buddy about it and then start to boot up to go ski it. it was a wow moment for me, especially considering the time (11am). but that's just the wasatch, i guess:rolleyes2
Sweet, good news then. Im so stoked to head out there even though the EC is having an epic season. A lil jealous you have all that terrain in your back yard and can hit it whenever you want. Cant wait to get some deep fresh. Not sure if this is kosher but, any local burnouts down to make some turns, maybe help a brother out while Im there? Dont feel like bringing a crazy stash with me, but will have some nice treats with me.
Sum random pov footy from the pen
fish why is that guy always ahead of you on the uphill?? Just kidding, awesome stuff man! Some amazing panoramas on top of those peaks and some amazing snow on the way down!
Any Powder Mtn beta?
i heard they have one with heated seats. i hear winter is closed in utah, everyone head home now. nothing to see here . LH want to check in?
Umm....nothing to see from Sunday thru tuesday at all. No cold trough dropping in with deep unstable airmass and nw winds. Nope. Nothing like that at all. No chance of producing a 24 hour window of very very heavy snows. Should stay in vail. Or maybe Hunter. Yea. Hunter. Much better than the Cottonwoods come tuesday morning. For sure.
I know its a little late, and i really suck at video editing, but here are a few shots from last friday at sundance off of the go pro. really deep day, but it was really flat light so it was pretty much just limited to tree skiing. hope somebody likes it!
