Harry for the win!
Inaugural float on Saturday was eventful. Started with the requisite leave the drain plug out. “Why’s there water coming in?”
Luckily we noticed it pretty quickly and before we left to shuttle.
The water down here was fairly clear this weekend, yesterday you could almost see the rocks you were going to hit.
I hit an invisible one pretty hard and the 11 year old went swimming. There was a fair bit of crying involved but luckily the dry bag full of spare clothes came in handy. Once we had him in some dry clothes we floated on.
Got both kids on the sticks, Taylor to Swallow on Saturday and Indian to Pipeline yesterday. My oldest picked up the casting and streamer stripping really well. The oaring is gonna take some time.
191 from Rock Springs is open. Browns Park road is fine as well, the county ran a grader over it on Friday. My oldest drove it in his Jetta all weekend. It’s dry and dusty out here at Boblandia.
The river is fucked down here today, chocolate. I ran to Trout Creek Flies and grabbed some gas, wood, and ice. Cruised through Dripping Springs, there were a few people camping but not very busy.
I’m going to start cooking some rice here in a bit. Gotta have it chilled for Friday night. There’s about a 90% chance my shit will be botulism free, but ya take your chances…
The droppers on the upper loop are closed and no running water on upper loop. Vault toilet open down by spots 1-4
Swimmy the A is entirely navigable at the lower flows, I have run it a LOT in a hard boat at those flows, just have to be nimble on the stickers.
I am rolling into DJ tomorrow night with a couple buddies, staying at my buddies DJ abode - what can I say Im a pussy, I like a soft bed and a warm shower. I will find you boys for beers and hopefully a few floating laughs! Safe travels everyone

Came down with a nasty head cold Sunday but fighting through and feeling much better today than I did yesterday.
Managed to get everything loaded up today. Just gotta hit the store on the way out and grab some groceries. We'll see how the drive goes but I'm leaning on rolling in midday Thursday.
Let's go!

Roads are so nasty right now in town. Just a thin sheet of ice. Just saw a bad wreck on huffine. Car slid out of control into oncoming traffic. Everyone was ok but really scary.
Shortly thereafter I about jackknifed the trailer even though I have the gain turned off and was only going 20. Decided to pull over and let it warm up a bit.
This is turning into quite the adventure.
Be safe swimmy! Looking forward to seeing you.

Good looking rig swimmy! Safe travels
I’m packed and loaded as well. Hoping to hit the road by 6, roll into DJ late tonight or early tomorrow. Just need i80 to stay open. It’s been on/off closures for light high profiles. Windy as fuck on the east side of divide.
Tele, thanks for chiming in on the A. I just needed someone to tell me to stop
being a pussy! Bringing the hard boat.
Djongo & I departing Jackson in a few minutes. Light flurries in the air but roads look good. Planning to stop at the Mountain Man Museum in Pinedale because history matters. Campground arrival approx 4-5 this afternoon.
Swimmy, once you get here you should be OK.

hope everyone has safe travels!

Day one did not disappoint! I get into the campground at about 8 am. With in 5 min, Lumpy rolls up, ask for change, and tells me to grab the 7wt. It s a streamer day. We roll down to Boblandia to check out the scene and get on the water. It was snowing hard! And we stuck em good! Solid first day and great to meet up with some Mags for the first time!

Got here early Wednesday afternoon, Bob & Lumpy were on the river still, so I cruzed up to Boblandia. My Chevy Cruze with a plastic oil pan made it just fine. Blew off Dripping Spring campground and pitched my tent at Boblandia.
Thursday: Two boats, 5 maggots fished in the snow. Fun times. C-section is absolutely beautiful. Cool history in the area.
Boblandia is awesome.
Pics won’t load, sparse internet out here.

Made it here yesterday. Still fighting this nasty head cold but grinding my way through.
Here's camp for a few days.

I gotta hand it to swimmy. He points at this big rock in the middle of the river and boasts “Watch me catch the big brown that lives behind that rock!”
Bold claim that I thought for sure swimmy would have to eat, but he delivered as promised.

Also huge props to Bob for hosting this. Boblandia is a fucking cool place. Ideal location for fly fishing.
Thanks Bob !

Sorry I had to bail early! When it started nuking again on Friday I worried about getting out of Boblandia and back to coach the kid's hoop game this morning. Looks like fish were caught and shenanigans continued despite the chilly temps. It was really good to put faces to internet characters again for the first time in years for me. Very therapeutic for me. Just wished I could have hung one more day! The weather kind of kept this whole deal on a balance beam.
Bob, thanks for sharing Boblandia again, little slice of heaven on earth! Dibs, thanks for the help with chow on Thursday night. JCPM, pleasure sharing the drift with you on Thursday, great day of fishing. Harry, did you ever catch up with the muskie guys who drifted below us on Wednesday? Thanks to 'Roos for picking up the rubber duck for me (I still have a pack of elk loin steaks for you that came home with me....I'll get them to you this summer). Swimmy, looking forward to logging some river miles with you in the near future. Thanks for making the haul through bad weather. I'll never forget Djongo charging up the South side of Jessie Ewing Hill in the VW, wrap around Oakleys, Sam Elliot stache' pressed up to the glass, blowing through 5-6 inches of fresh snow crushing pow like a possessed Piston-Bully operator mowing through 3-feet of fresh Jackson pow at 30-mph! Wish I could have said hello and spent more time with everyone! Next time!
Pics from the day.
My first time down the A. Spectacular canyon.

This highlight of the day was JCPM's brown. Roos spotted a rising fish tucked in on the bank below a big boulder. Super tight lie and perfect spot for a sneaky brown. I rowed us into position, and on the second cast we got an eat. Fuck yeah.
We left our net so we decided to row over to the bank and try to tail this fish. Hard enough but on 5x this was going to be fun.

Shortly thereafter Roos got on the board with another dry fly eat.

Bite was slow for me but really cool checking out new water and hanging with solid dudes.

Holy fuck this has been too much fun. I’m sitting here in my truck at Boblandia. We went ass backwards through most of the lower rapids, then our journey began.
Brown’s Park road was a joy. We rolled into the bottom of Jesse Ewing hill to find a Subaru axle deep.
He tried to flag us down, yeah, fuck that.
We powered to the top and tried to walk down, I fell twice. Mud head to toe. We heard him sounding like he was heading out the bottom.
After my kid’s karma from the previous night we decided we were good.
That was some fun shit. We’ll probably run a shorty down here tomorrow and then hit the road.
We had every intention of coming down to the campground Friday night for a cocktail but after 2 days of this all I wanted was a hot shower, a cold whiskey and bed. It was good to see a few of you this morning for a cup of coffee.

I sure did, turns out they were part of Ben’s crew. We exchanged digits and will definitely be fishing together this summer.

thanks, as always, for another fantastic gathering of maggots. SO STOKED to meet so many of you in person for the first time - telee, jcpn, swimmy, and harry. y'all are great people. thanks for being so accommodating to an absolute noob

roos and company were nice enough to let us crash their dinner reservation - one of the weirdest, bestest highlights of the trip. question: how many paintings of elk and moose can you have in one room? answer: at least 8
much much better than eating frozen food while shivering in 25 degree weather back at camp

I'm having a ton of trouble getting pictures to upload, so I'm going to reach out to all the mags I know on the trip and send a google link with photos, feel free to add your own
thanks again everyone, so stoked to have gotten out with you all
Harry, are you missing a black soft shell? Found one in the backseat of my truck (along with about a pound of red Boblandia dust).
Yep, great time. One of these years I’ll be able to sync up being there when the rowdy fun/fishing happens.
Who had the aqua colored Adipose skiff? Man, no place to hide from the wind, snow, and weather in that machine. I’d rather be snuggled up to Sheldon in the Hog Mo’ Ship in that weather!
Tgapp- Y Drifter looks great!
If I didn't have responsibility, I'd still be standing knee deep in A picking off rising fish. That shit was so fun.
We also got a tip on how to hike into B. Guy said they did it on Saturday and never saw another person. Fishing was excellent with countless #'s in the net.
Now that I've been, I'll be better prepared next trip.
Yo Lumpy, that'd be mine. Feel free to use it, keep it, whatevs. It was a sam's/Costco cheap buy and worn a few times. NBD...
Back later for my blog entry...
Bummed I didn’t get to hang out with the crew. It was good to see some of you for a cup of coffee though, Tgapp I’m drinking a cup of FKNA as I type this.
The weather wasn’t conducive to hanging out but the fish didn’t seem to care.

I still don’t have all my shit put away. I arrived home last Sunday completely spent, it took me at least three days to recover from that trip.
I loaded up our shit and headed out on the Friday, 11yo and dog in the truck. The whole ride I was worried about the road to Boblandia. That fear wasn’t assuaged by the woman at Trout Creek Flies that pretty much told me I was insane to go that way.
We rolled onto a freshly graded Jesse Ewing hill, cruised right up it.

I always love coming around the corner and seeing this view of Boblandia.
Attachment 457337
Unfortunately we found brown water, but, we were still camping!
Attachment 457338
Attachment 457339
Luckily the water wasn’t too bad the next morning and we floated bridge to Swallow. Both kids were flinging flies, and both got on the sticks.
Attachment 457340
Attachment 457341
We had the requisite fried chicken lunch.
Attachment 457342
The next day we got up and the river was even a bit clearer, we floated Indian to Pipeline.
The locals had been doing well.
Attachment 457343
Dogs love boats.
Attachment 457344
Kids love boats, we had the longest cumulative hair on the river.
Attachment 457345
The boys left that afternoon and I made do with a hot dog.
Attachment 457346
^^ Doing it right. a/k/a #winning
I got up the next morning and went down to the bridge, sure enough, the warmer weather had fucked the river.
Attachment 457347
I went to “town” and grabbed some firewood, ice, and gas for the generator. Spent the rest of the day fucking around camp while watching the weather forecast get worse.
The next day I got up and started cooking batches of rice. Lumpy called after arriving at Dripping Springs, I took the call while watching it sleet sideways from inside my trailer. My enthusiasm for sleeping in a tent was dimming. I told Lumpy I’d think about it and would come there after my current batch of rice was done.
I drove there and lured him to Boblandia with tales of clearing water and delicious food!
The food was mediocre, but serviceable. I cobbled together some chicken and bbq sauce with a side of microwave rice.
Attachment 457349
The digs at Boblandia aren’t posh, but they beat 20 degrees and windy. (In a tent)
Attachment 457350
We got up the next morning and on the shitter visit were excited to see somewhat clear water. The benefit of the cold temps were less run off from Red Creek.
Attachment 457351
We had a somewhat pleasant but cold float, Lumpy stuck one and christened the new boat and net.
Attachment 457352
We even saw some BWO’s far downstream.
Attachment 457353
We were headed back to Boblandia when we came up behind two white vehicles, Harry and Djongo joined the festivities!
We arrived and Lumpy filled the Trout bugle.
Attachment 457354
We settled in and I think one of the highlights of the week was watching Django with Djongo.
Attachment 457355
4/20 we got up and floated Bridge to Pipeline. I don’t really have any pictures as it was COLD AS FUCK! We got snowed on soon after the put in, there was at least two inches of snow in the boat with us. That was the first day I noticed my left foot was wet, which became a constant from then out.
Djongo and Harry were troopers, we soldiered on down the river.
Attachment 457358
Lumpy and JCPM headed to Dripping Springs and we couldn’t be pried from Boblandia.
Gotta thank Lumpy for taking over the cooking, I failed on that.
The next morning we all met at the bridge, it had snowed overnight.
Attachment 457362
Swimmy floated with us and stuck one.
Attachment 457363
The weather was decent.
We switched up boats, floated on.
Attachment 457364
Attachment 457365
More fish were caught.
Attachment 457366
Harry and I kept Boblandia secured.
Attachment 457367
UPDATE: we are going fishing tomorrow on a river I have not been on since Boy Scouts. Targeting smallmouths. Should be fun.
