Just came over echo. Snow lvl 7k. 2" on the groung and puking. 1"/ hr big fat flakes. Rock skis + grassy slope above 8 k will be doable tomorrow.
The crest is looking pretty white from down here at Donner Lake. If anyone was thinking of going into the ski repair business this might be the time.

I scoped out both AM and Donner Pass last evening around 6. There wasn't much that looked skiable, except for maybe the very top of Lincoln @ SB. Castle Peak was holding at that time, but again, nothing looked that skiable.

Tried to go up heavy gondola with the FAM but it was closed due to power outage and snow. Guy at the bottom said a foot+ up top above 9000.
I shall not be joining the downers. We pretty much always get at least one snowfall in late September and it us usually never lasts. It's happened every year since we moved to T - Town. I am also not alarmed that October looks to start out a bit dry, as the seasons with the very wet falls most often result in disappointing winters.Quote:

Speaking of jonesing, I decided snowboarding looked too much fun after watching Higher and got a split setup. Today on Rose, I saw an army of boarders hiking out to some stash with a rail. This one was already tracked out.

Hey folks - I've organized a ski lease in South Lake Tahoe for the past 12 years - have a few open spots this year. Long-time lurker on the boards, but first time poster, so won't let me post the Craigslist Ad, so I've just copied it in here:
We have a few open spots for our 2015 Winter Ski Lease, and are looking for interesting folks to fill in! We are a mix of skiers & boarders, guys & gals, who like to spend time together on the mountain, as well as relax back at the house, cook meals or go out together, play games or hit the casinos. I think we're a very laid-back and friendly group. We've had this ski lease going for 12+ years, and its a great house, and a great deal! In the past, everyone has gotten the Tahoe Local pass (for Heavenly, Kirkwood, Northstar), and the skiing options are almost unlimited.
The house is in South Lake Tahoe, minutes from Heavenly, and close to Kirkwood (40 mins), Sierra (20 mins). It has four bedrooms, a nice kitchen and dining room, and a large living room. Sleeps 8-10 comfortably, and we're aiming for a total of 12 members for the season. There's a garage and additional parking outside, a hot tub in the big back yard, and Ski Run Blvd is a 5-minute walk away.
The lease runs Jan 02 through April 26, and it will be $800 for the entire season. Lease members are allowed to use the house whenever they want. Guests are welcome and pay a fee (space permitting, and not to be abused with recurring guests). If there's any money left over at the end of the season, we'll get a refund back. Unfortunately, no pets allowed.

2014/15 season officially started for me today with a jaunt down to Dunderberg for three runs on three separate snowfields/patches/glaciers. New fluff on old scruff was the style of the day.
Can't wait for it to start dumping, so I can try my new Amperages + Vipecs, also to log my first season snowkiting.

Off the cuff, legally they don't have to honor the purchase because it was so obvious a mistake that the mythical "reasonable person" would understand that it was a mistake. These things happen often enough that there's caselaw on it but I'm too lazy to go find it right now.
All that being said, I'm curious what they do because PR and legal issues are wholly separate and in tension. There may have been few enough sales that they'll just say fuck it and not fight people on it. Actually... I think the most likely thing, and what they should do, is offer to either refund Arcsim's $2 or allow him to purchase the passes at a substantial discount, say Gold Passes for $350 or something like that.
Curious to see what happens.
^^ Yeah, I shouldn't have said legally but more so the policy of most credit card companies (their official stance is tough shit and maybe you should be more careful in the future).
The discounted pass alternative is a reasonable thing to do, so surely KSL will do otherwise. ;-)

HOMEWOOD- A new species of cat has recently been identified on the slopes of Homewood Mountain Resort — this one a Bombardier snowcat complete with a 12-person carrier, designed to ferry powderhounds and adventurous skiers and snowboarders to the top of Ellis Peak this winter.
Homewood Snowcat Adventures will debut this winter on 750-plus acres of backcountry terrain on the flanks of Ellis Peak, pending U.S. Forest Service permits to operate on public lands above the resort’s traditional ski area boundary.
Once transported to the peak, groups of up to 10 skiers and riders will enjoy guided access to a wide variety of terrain options — from perfectly-spaced tree runs to steeps, powder bowls and intermediate-level glades — all leading guests back to the in-bounds terrain at the resort.
“Backcountry skiers and our resort staff have long known that the terrain behind the resort off Ellis Peak offers truly amazing skiing and riding,” said Kevin Mitchell, general manager of Homewood Mountain Resort. “We are very excited to be able to offer our customers guided snowcat access to this new mountain playground during the upcoming winter.”
All-day packages with Homewood Snowcat Adventures will feature small group sizes (10 skier/rider max) and a fully guided experience — with guides trained by the North American Ski Training Center — in the out-of-bounds terrain accessed by the snowcat.
Participants will enjoy laps of up to 1,828 vertical feet from the 8,740-foot summit of Ellis Peak — where panoramic views of Lake Tahoe and the Desolation Wilderness await — to the bottom of the Old Homewood Express chairlift.
“Getting out into the backcountry has always been a rite of passage for powder-seeking Tahoe skiers and snowboarders,” Mitchell said. “Our new guided snowcat operation will make that adventure more attainable for those who may not have the proper gear or training to explore the backcountry on their own.”
Getting in on the fun
Reservations are currently being accepted for guided snowcat skiing/snowboarding packages on select days throughout the 2014-15 season.
All-day packages with Homewood Snowcat Adventures will start at $399 per person per day for the snowcat and lift access. Homewood season pass holders receive $100 off the price of all-day snowcat tours for themselves and any friends they choose to share the adventure with, when all members of the party are booked together.
Groups or companies wishing to enjoy a day of private guided snowcat touring are encouraged to call or email Homewood’s Group Sales department at 530-584-6840 or sales@skihomewood.com for availability and group pricing options.
All participants must be advanced skiers or snowboarders during normal operations; however, private group tours for intermediate-level skiers/riders can be arranged with full buyout.

Just here to say that after a decade away from California, I'll be back at Kirkwood for the season with a ski house and way too much free time. I have probably forgotten most of my Kirkwood inbounds knowledge, and I know for sure I have misplaced my slackcountry/backcountry navigation markers, so I'll be hoping to hook up with some competent, fast, safe, and all around fun groups to get after it. I will happily provide credentials/references from SLC maggots, but I'm confident that I can keep up with and ski safely with any crew.
And for SF folks, i'm getting some people together in the next few weeks at Crissy field to bury beacons (in ziplocs of course) at the beach to practice single and multiple burials. I know i'll be rusty after not practicing all summer, so if anyone else wants to shake the dust off let me know and i'll get you the info!
