What's up with people in Canada going with the wind chill number? My daughter does that. Of course it's always windy in Fredericton and she walks to campus, but still. It's annoying.

And it was in the single digits above zero here in snow Albans last week. Wasn't so bad.
i find single digits to be fine too as long as it was negative the day before. funny how that works
It was 9F this morning on Union Hill, Lower Snoqualmie Valley.
It’s a not subtle humble brag when the windchill numbers gets quoted
Riser that campus being built on a slope is a death trap once it becomes icy
I get the daily Sun Peaks update. It was -35 in the valley today. That is to fuckin cold to even consider for this jong.
We woke to -33C at 450m up the valley from Sun Peaks. A little colder in Blue River and Valemount. Didn't even start the vehicles today, daughter took great humour in my frosted beard after walking the hound. Got to -21C at 13:00. Took all the XC skis in and doubled up the cold blue glide wax - these temps are with us for a couple more days yet. Hound is happy, she doesn't mind the temps, but knows she gets warm meat & bone broth when the mercury dips below -20C. Coldest its been here at this time of year since they started the weather station in 2014; can't remember it being this cold at Yuletime since I moved here in 2008.
Many local social media posts showing the record highs of 47C in June, down to minus mid-30's 6mo later. Crazy times.
Looks like it's going to be a tad chilly in W2 next week.
Welcome winter!Attachment 438755

That be ambient. Lol. We'll see if it actually gets that cold. I think it will depend on how far that arctic front dips to the south.
You guys are projected to be on the southern tip of the front. You could catch a break. Big Sky forecast seems a tad warmer even.
In any case the woodstove is going to get a workout this week.
Hope you are right, I have a new intern starting on Wednesday with us scheduled to walk around outside quite a bit at the Y/C.
What I really would like is for all the folks that moved here in the past 3 years to get a good dose of Montana weather.
That won’t matter.
This cold snap isn’t the impetus but we’re out of here as soon as we can swing it (too many moving pieces to just say fuck it and peace out).

Brutal.
My grandmother homesteaded Conrad Montana in the early 1900s. No Goretex. No thinsulate. Just wool and oiled cloth between them and those cold cold winters.
Here is a pic of her circa 1917.

Cool pic, I know a few families from Conrad. I've been burning way too much wood for this early. Need to go take the chainsaw for a walk, gonna be a long winter.

Yeah cool pick KQ. That Rocky Mountain Front country is not for wimps even today, but back then it was much harder. I really like those Ivan Doig novels about that area around the turn of the century. Those people were hardcore.
into the 2nd arctic outflow cold snap and its not even the new year, the ski hill is shut down
-20 C at Whistler right now.

Cold in Bayport, MN this week as well.
It’s gonna be -22F at my cabin in Fairbanks, MN on Wednesday. Yikes.
-26F at my house in Tabernash last night
I got friends from Conrad and Valier. According to them, the secret is rum and cokes.
I remember back when I was young, Dr. Pepper used to promote hot Dr. Pepper as a holiday drink………. Hot rum and Coke anyone?

spending Christmas on planet Hoth this year
Gram's family came from North Carolina to Conrad. According to Gram most of the families who lived there were Norwegians which seems about right for the weather. Must have seemed like home for them. My family not so much but being stubborn tar heels they weren't going to let it break them.
North of the wall. Among the wildlings and white walkers.
Night gathers, and now my watch begins.
My grandfather ran the grain elevator on Conrad. Dad graduated from high school there. After Vietnam he took his new family (I was born during his tour) to Valier, where we were quarantined for several weeks due to malaria.
Small world...

High of 5ºF here on Thursday. Wonder if the morning low will dip below -20ºF at the house?
Hopefully not, have a couple of cords that have been seasoned. But I'm in MT and have cut and burned plenty of standing dead lodgepole and Doug same year.

I know Seattle is pretty mild compared to most places, but I noticed today we haven't had a single day yet in December where the high temperature got up to the average high for that day. This week is going to be cold with high temps right around freezing through Thursday. Supposed to get a warmup starting Friday and Christmas Day is forecasted to be around 50. People are going to be outside in shorts. :)
-42*F forecast ambient low temp in West Yellowstone Wednesday night. Damn.
