191 PM Gear Lhasa Fat

Picked up my all carbon, slightly softer, fats Sunday. First impression; everything I was looking for.

What was it I was looking for? A replacement for my chainsaw Megawatts, a ski that was better than the watts on hardpack and in crud, while still having the ability to float and slarve. To get this I was prepared to have a narrower ski with less rocker and a bit stiffer flex.

The flex is somewhat stiffer than the watts in the tip and pretty much the same underfoot and in the tail. They seem much "poppier", probably the carbon, and the tip rocker is lower and shorter, but also seem more natural compared to the clownshoes on the watts. They semi-twin on the watts has been replaced by a slight upturn on the fats.
Overall, far from the big mountain beast I was worried they would be. Compared to some other skis I've skied the last few years I would say they are slightly stiffer than 186 EHP and Rossi Ravyns. Stiffer than C&Ds in the tip and tail, but softer underfoot.

As others have stated, the skis seem to be of great quality. My only problem now is of course the tele-mount-voodoo. Going to mount these with NTNs, probably at Pats suggested or -1/-1,5. The mounting point is a bit forward compared to the 'watts, but due to less rocker that makes sense.

There is only one pair of 191 Fats left out of what was quite a bunch a month ago. They are hybrids.

the line appears to be @ 104.5cm from the tip.
this mount point seems a bit forward to me; it's about 2cm farther forward than my 191 Goliath (and the Lhasa Fat has more tip rocker).

who has mounted where, and did you like it?

I have mine mounted almost 1cm forward and they're perfect for touring. That puts the mount well behind my 192's mounted on the line

At zero and it rips.

The 192's definitely charge, I'm at 1055mm from the tip on those. I'll have to pull a binding to measure the Lhasa mount but the line should be the same on all of the 191 fats. And just for fun a couple scenic shots from yesterday on Lhasa fats.

Pretty sure that 104.5 is incorrect.

Reg 186 Lhasa is 104 pulled from tip, and so 191 is 106.5 pow, 105.5 resort.

Mine looks like 41 1/8" to the line. Sorry can't find my metric tape.

i'm sure all the lines are marked at the skunk works and trust that the lines are at the same distance from the tip (hand marking is the way to go).

but i just want to get some opinions prior to drilling and haven't seen too much mention of mounting points on this board.

i'll probably just trust the wisdom of the builder and go with Splat's mark.


FWIW in re: to the difference in mounting points between the 191 Fat and the 191 Goliath: the Goliath does have a square tail while the Fat has a rounded, slightly raised tail (i can see this pushing the effective edge forward, and thus the boot center mark as well).

104.5 has been the mark since we got reports it made them much quicker for tree skiing and that the tips won't dive. That's tape pulled straight, no bends. People have gone even further forward than that, but I say that's as far forward as I'd go. Pull from the tips.

I ski mine almost exclusively in titans and being a huge fatass being a little forward makes them super easy to ski neutral without driving the tips too much. If they were my resort sticks if be on the line.

Just got a mail from the GSA. He's rockin his 191 Fats at JH lately and rather ecstatic about the performance. He sent me a vid of him rippin on them but I can't get it to open. edit: Got it open. He's rippin them 191 Fats just the way they should be!

Still got a pair of dual rocker 191 Fats for sale cheap for feedback on them.

after much debate regarding what and where to mount i finally decided to mount my 191 Lhasa Fats with sollyfits for a 302BSL @ -1.2cm.

that puts my alpine boots @ -1.5 and my touring boots @ -0.9.


skied them in boot top wind blown leftovers today and that mounting point seems like money.

on a side note: i'm not selling these skis.

short review: poppy, chargey, slarvy; don't get in the back seat.

I would very much like to snag a pair of these said beasts, at $1099 their a little bit more pricey than the next competitor, any maggot deals?

I'm only half sure that I'll sell my Lhasa fats. I love them, maybe more than I don't want to hear my wife complain about too many skis.

They have replaced two skis in my quiver, both of which I thought were keepers:

Movement Goliath @ 108mm waist, and the
Lotus 120 Pure Flex 3 @ 120 (duh)

When people ask me about them I say they're made by "some mad scientist in Utah".

I thought the gearswap ninja had hoarded multiple pairs of each.

unfortunately i haven't had the pleasure of meeting him in person.
however. i did chat with a random dude on the bus today at breck who agreed with the mad scientist (sans utah) description and had apparently crashed on his couch.

recently i've been trying to simplify (a bit); down to 4 pairs with strict seperation of purpose, no overlap!

but i have been thinking about buying jed's pair as a back-up.

just read this whole thread instead of working today but can't focus because chugachjed's fats are on the way to my house and i can't wait to see them. we will see how they like the terrain at Magic over presidents day hopefully

Wax them before you ski on them, I gave them a mild base grind etc, I think I forgot the wax though. Just FYI

First day on my goliaths in a while i have the biggest grin in my face in the jh tramline right now. If the lhasas are better than these, look out

i loved the Goliath, great crud ski / quiver of one.

but i was very surprised that the much wider lhasa fat was more fun on the groomers / crud than the venerable Goliath.
(more energy and pop inbetween turns, but still somewhat damp; and it was faster edge to edge with a super reliable "drive-me tip").

and the fat is clearly better in the pow, probably just by virtue of the greater surface area.


RE: Lhasa Fat vs 120, i would say that the fat has ~95% of the pow performance, so close enough considering the fat does everything else better.

I will pressing a pure carbon pair for myself so my hybrids could be considered up for sale.
About 25 days, one repaired core shot, super awesome aeronautic carbon on top.

Came back from lunch today in Tignes, France, to a crowd of people looking at my skis and wanting to know all about them :-) love my 191 Fats... they have been great in all this snow we've had lately in Europe ! Will post pics after tomorrow as its meant to clear and most of the upper mountain closed or not being visited the last 3 days snow.

Mellow day from yesterday in Tignes shows off how great the 191 Fats are ! Mine are what Pat described as i-beam stiff, full trippy carbon jobbies. Bit of meadow skipping early before more opened and then a couple of good runs down the Grande Balm face. Still amazed how I have ended up using this ski every day this season so far !!!

My 191 lhasa fat hybrid is my new favorite ski.

Tomorrow I plan to ski them back to back with the new pair of full carbons that I picked up from ottoparts
The hybrids are stiff and weigh about 4# 12oz.
The pures are mediumsoft and weigh roughly 4# 3oz.

In the end I might mount the hybrids dedicated alpine and the pures dedicated tech.

They are currently both mounted with sth14s.
