Marriage, along with a move to Bozeman and recent purchase of a house have cramped my old ski buying habits. I've been holding out on the whole shaped revolution for far too long. My whole deal was that I thought that shaped skis would make average skiers appear better than they are, and it would bring less legitamacy to the elite skiers.
Not that I think I am elite, actually I am far from it. But in my opinion, the old skool, that worked so hard to bring the sport to where it is today, worked so much harder on the old straights and I was worried that it would flood the playing field...kinda like if the MLB would expand or even if they allowed steroids or corked bats. Kinda of warped, I know! On the contrary...the new skis have taken the sport to a whole new level again and again...not to mention breathing new life into it after some (mainly snowboarders) were righting it off. Thanx to innovators like yourself we all have something to talk about!
But anyway, I'm happy to help your cause and you'll be recieving my order within the next few days!
I joined this site mainly b/c of a torn ACL and too much time on my hands while everybody I know is out riding, but the real reason was to find a pair of skis.
And just to start allittle who-ha before I leave, I'm going to put a pair of markers on my knew BROS.
What you think of that TGR
... ???  :nonono2: :frown:Quote:

I'm not cunting up a thread about BRO's. Just don't be a dick and try to piss people off by trolling.
Thanks for supporting pmgear.
AStar - Every pair sold from now forward counts toward that 20.
beb - you can order off the website.
Thanks.
Bro 179 Report: Day 2
N. Facing shots with the 179 Bro's and my 195lb carcass: Pow was deep, skis are super fun and float just fine. I skied some sluff debris to mix it up, and they floated well on that too. My Dyanfit FR10's would tip dive in the debris. Super easy turn initiation. Visibility was slim, so slower speeds were in order, and the Bro's were super fun in these conditions. Float well at slow speeds, easy to turn.
Exit snow on S. facing. Foot of snow over frozen, hard snow: Again, low vis and slow skiing required. Skis were again great. Intentionally slabbed of some snow to expose steeper, hard snow. Did some short swing jump turns on steep hard snow. Seemed to hold an edge fine. Again, hard to say how they do on these conditions, because I didn't have a bunch of these turns in a row.
Impression: Great pow ski. They definitely have their sweet spot. For someone lighter than me, they would absolutely kick ass. But for my type of skiing, (all touring), they are a kick ass ski. And I still really like the shorter length for skinning, and for easy jump turns on steeper terrain.
I don't see skiing hardpack any time soon:D , but when I do, I'll report.
Again, the tails are soft, but they don't feel too soft. And damn, they are truly a light ski.
The only thing they need is a tail groove to keep your skins on. But I will mod something on to them.
what do you me, again xtrpickles. This is the first real knee injury of my life. I literally just placed my order and I hope you guys make your quota so I can buy next years too!
trackhead, at 195 lbs i'm really liking the brostiffs at 188 for all kinds of BC goodness. the edgehold is very good on the firm stuff.
from what i've read here the 179 stiff is quite a bit softer than the 188 stiff. surprised the shortie is working so well for you since we weigh the same.
anyway, regarding skin attachment, after some thinking, i eventually decided to mount a small piece of rubber (cut from a road bike tire) on the topsheet of the tail, with two small screws and some epoxy. this works extremely well with my G3 tail clamp, and would prolly work fine with most skin tail clamps.
the square piece of rubber is a little wider than the clamp.
on most skis, i simply file a tail groove, but for pseudo twins with a continuous edge (like the bros), the piece of tire approach is the way to go.
Never really had a problem with the STS kit on my Ascensions. Sometimes the clip would move a little to either side towards the end of a moderate hike (involving traverses), but it never comes close to coming off.
just looked up the word, "trolling"
definately not my intention...just trying to make light of the marker hatred around here! Maybe I was looking for a reaction, and I am guilty of that, but I was trying to be sarcastic. Sorry if I offended.
Wow. We're getting a lot of reviews by email that aren't getting posted here and I am blown away by the feedback. Hate to toot the PM Gear horn so loudly, but this guy's letter blew me away. I am just glowing at his review. Three days on them in Switzerland and he ordered another pair:
Hi Pat,
Either you or the group of guys who put this ski
together are the stuff of genius.
Best ski I've ever had on my feet. Skied everything
from windblow powder, avalanche debris, corn, groomed
and boilerplate the last three days. It does
everything I asked it to do and more. What is so
freaky is its stability at warp speed and the ability
to drive through crud and at the same time pop off
short turns on the steep. It also carves and drifts
without a hiccup. I just can't figure out how you got
it to do all of this and be as light as it is. It
absolutely blows skis like the Volkl Mantra off the
hill.
I got them mounted at 993 mm. Should I go a bit more?
I'm going to order another pair and have them sent to
my US address. I'm also interested in a pair of 188s.
Would you recommend the stiffs knowing that I weigh
185? My wife will also have a pair as soon as you come
out with a 170?
Just got mine.:FIREdevil They look great. Everything right on point.

Thanks Splat!
Still haven't been able to find anything but powder to ski the Bro's in. When I do, I'll report.
I finally dropped them off for the much needed grind and wax, haven't had time to do so until now. Been skiing too much.
Still like 'em in the deep. Good float, etc.

Yeah. I have a special paw friendly camera.Quote:

Eh...go with the stiffs, flip.
Love that this mini-review has turned into a full on report. TH - is that pic from yesterday? Sorry I missed you up here, i passed out early without the help of a beer...

We haven't gotten the softs to ship yet, so the only reviews are on the stiffs.Quote:

Will their then be a 3rd option for ordering on the website? Or will there be a way of knowing if you're getting a "regular" stiff or "stiffer" stiff?Quote:

With so few of the maple stringer pairs getting made, it will probably just be announced here when we get them.
Finally got the 179 Stiff Bro out on steeper terrain. Skied a relatively firm 53 degree slope on them today. They felt fine. Again, very easy to get the ski around due to weight and lenght.
It wasn't quite as icy or firm as I could have liked, but I think they will work on those conditions. But until I get them on truly steep, firm snow, I can't say for sure.
Otherwise, the couly we skied today was 40-45 degrees, narrow in places, and the 179's were a blast. The twin tip is nice for the 'couloir shuffle' that takes place in narrow coulies.
Still having fun on 'em.
Dear splat,
I've had the 179 stiff Bros mounted up for a couple weeks now with Dynafit Comforts and had a chance to ski them in a few different conditions. The first several trips were up Snow King, the local hill in Jackson that is now closed for the season but a great place to skin 1500' and make some turns at lunch. Since I am new to dynafits, I wanted to get everything dialed in a controlled environment but it basically all worked perfectly and intuitively right from the start.
The Bros/Comforts are pure skinning bliss - so light and not much sidecut to screw things up on firm side hills. I also installed some 110 mm ski crampons that were made semi-custom by B&D Ski Gear which are light, easy to use, and a perfect match with the bros. For the way down, I couldn't believe how nimble yet powerful the Bros were. Super light and quick but able to carve big arcs and cut through crud when needed. My Megarides provided all the boot I needed and I just couldn't believe how much fun these skis were. I've skied a lot of different sticks but it's rare that I connect this strongly with new boards so quickly.
This morning I took them up to Teton Pass for a couple runs in 5" of new snow on top of crust and slop. Again, the Bros wildly exceeded my expectations as they handled the variable conditions beautifully. In the soft stuff, they floated effortlessly and just powered through the slop, crud, and crust. I couldn't believe that I was on skis this short and narrow as I'm used to skis a bit longer and fatter in the BC. I even entertained the idea of having the 179 Bros be my only BC ski and not getting new powder boards next year. Of course, that's crazy talk.
The flex of the 179 stiff bros is perfect for me at 6', 160 lbs. Despite your sage advice, I mounted 1000 mm from the tip (about 1 cm behind the line) and I couldn't be happier. I like having a little extra ski up front since 179 is a bit short for me and I've had no trouble arcing them on groomers, even in AT boots. I'm convinced that the 188 softs that I briefly owned last spring were an anomaly or mislabeled - they were WAY too stiff for me.
Anyhow, just wanted to let you know how stoked I am with the Bros. Despite financial troubles, you guys are killing it with your product and I'm going to hype the Bros to everyone I know in Jackson and Tahoe. And feel free to use any of my comments for self-promotion.
BTW, if you ever make a ski that is 185-190 cm and 105-115 underfoot with the same light weight, characteristics, and flex of the 179 stiffs, you can pretty much put me on the pre-order list.
Good luck with everything this summer and best wishes for a rosy financial future. The ski world would be a much worse place without PM Gear.
Thanks, 3p, that's a freakin rave review if ever we've gotten one.
As for any new 179 or 188 soft orders - we're asking people to hold off right now until we ship what just came in today.
Except for 188 stiffs, which we have an abundance of at this time.
At the same time ,we are finalizing everything to set up our own shop, including getting the press, a CNC, and a Wintersteiger.
Thanks again to everyone who has supported PM Gear.
Next year will rock!
