When I worked for the Scripps Research Institute, their policy was you were charged two (2) vacation days before sick leave kicked in. Lot's of people showed up for work with colds, and sometimes a flu. One year, 2010, I had four (4) colds. Never went in whilst contagious and lost at least eight (8) vacation days that year.

Scripps was a fucked up place from a senior administration level. Best fucking science I was ever associated with, but run like a third world shithole.

I've never been vaccinated against influenza, BTW. Never. Nor shall I ever be.

Not necessarily, but one thing is certain: the vaccination is guaranteed NOT to work if you don't get it.

I guess I just don't get why people who aren't anti-vax wouldn't get a flu shot.

There's evidence that seasonal vaccination can lessen the severity of symptoms if you are infected with influenza, especially this season with H3N2 being the nastiest strain.

So many vaccinations do us good - Polio, MMR, chicken pox, just to name a few why is the flu shot so vilified? Would anyone here refuse a polio vac?

Perhaps it's because the flu itself isn't what kills anybody. It's always secondary/terciary illnesses that do them in. Their body's immune system is working overtime to take care of the virus so it opens the door to something else. You'll always see the headlines say "flu-related" and such. Never the flu itself. Sometimes a person already has an underlying issue. The flu just puts them over the edge like a heart that's already having a tough time.

That's why it's so tough on babies and the elderly. For the vast majority of people who seem fine and healthy, the flu's really not that big of a deal so many just don't bother with the shot. Especially with its abysmal efficacy rates. Always seems that each year the rates are patheticly low. The flu's a tough one to nail I'm sure since it's always "on the move." I'm sure it's like playing whack-a-mole for the vaccine makers.

Now when they come out with an effective catch-all vaccine (or please God, a cold vaccine), then I'd be willing to bet that participation rates would skyrocket.
