After the 1st or 2nd time skiing with U, I emailed or SMS'd Ripz and always referred to you as "teleal" (my spelling) from that point on.
Perhaps Ripz was using that handle for U before I arrived on the scene? But, he never told me to hook-up with TeleAl. I always thought I gave you that handle, but never to your face.
My handle refers to my love for backpacking and hiking in the hills and mountains. Nothing finer than to be lost (both spiritually and mentally) in the trees.
Go out and get yourself lost and find yourself.
I have had it since the internet came on strong (about 15 years ago). I used it instead of my real name because of my concerns about security (or, the lack of it).
I created this name because I got tried of all the political discussions on this site.

Now, I am not sure who named me.
I just know, I did not name me.
I should have gone with BigGayAl.
SuperFlyPhil (aka BigHairyPhil) named me that.
On our second outing out w/ Ripz I heard him refer to you with that handle. Never understood why or the history behind it. But after hearing that, I never took the middle seat in a triple chair w/ you and always followed you down the pistes! :wink:Quote:

Too stupid to explain, although it has always been a part of my online presence since 1991.
I was The Arch Druid over on powdermag, so I just shortened it to The AD here. The Arch Druid is a reference to one of my favorite musicians, Julian Cope, who calls himself "The Arch Drude" sort of a combination of Arch Druid and Dude. OK, he's kind of a weird guy and he's into paganism.
Anyway, I thought the name would seem kind of cryptic and cool. Actually it sounds dorky, but it's too late to change now! My wife always complains about how lame my name is, but her great suggestion is "SnowKat" and that isn't exactly masculine.
Like the AD, I am using shortened version of my old name from Powder, Viva El Caballo. The origin of that name lies herein:

Truthfully, an Austrian ski legend, abbreviated, many times over, by my friends who found it easier than saying my name.

"Nugget" is slang in some military units for "New Guy." I also tend to think of it as something raw and unrefined but still very valuable, much like my skiing ability (don't misinterpret this: I suck but love to ski).
While the "New Guy" aspect certainly applies, I guess I wasn't looking to far forward at the time I chose it.
I'd never change my name though unless the board got moved again. Too much value in join date and post count around here. They are the foundation of maggot-trust, and I wouldn't want to compromise my investment in that in any way.
Sitting around cutting up kirkwood stickers trying to make words because I felt guilty just throwing them away.
My friends started calling me train because i had a habit of skiing towards them while they were standing....and i wouldn't stop.....thus the "don't get caught standing" line...

Oh, and I learned how to snowboard at Mt. High in SoCal. They have a terrain park called Boarderline. :)
It's mildly ironic that I have a handle based on a terrain park since I'm more of a freerider than jibber, and more mellow than borderline anything, but I digress. :D
It was a warm night. My crew was spike camped next to a fireline outside of Red River NM. It was just before dawn and the smoke was hanging around. It was warm enough that everyone was just sleeping out on the ground. I headed out into the trees to take a leak. On the way back I stumbled over some branches or brush or something and my buddy woke up from a deep sleep, looked up from about 20 or 30 yards away to see this dark figure stumbling out of the woods headed toward him. He said with my long ratty hair, my black face in the hanging smoke from that distance he woke up from a dream and honestly thought I was bigfoot coming to eat him :biggrin: . From then on I was YetiMan on the fire crew. The fact that I'm basicly a large, dirty, foul animal sort of reinforced the whole thing, as did the fact that I had a coyote who went with me everywhere for a while.
I'm a whore for props. After finishing a rad run down the Roman Wall (the name for the top 1500' of the C-D route on Mt. Baker), I pulled up to a small party of cliimbers. The 14 year old girl, responding properly, turned to her dad and said, "well, is that extreme skiing, or what?". Her dad gave me a wave of dismissal and explained, "Nah, that's just a Baker Bunny!" :tdo13:
