Sonora Pass 2011

Sorry to have missed you Mike. We rolled in at 9 am groggy as hell. My jong newbie friend had a pretty good fail, bringing his dynafit boots and 14-year-old resort skis and no poles. Good thing the snow held up on sat for post-holing.

Yes, got the Y again and had a mellow day at Blue Canyon on Sunday.

You made your friend boot pack to the Y? Nice.

It was pretty funny, but the dude's a mountaineering bull who knows all those frenchy boot pointing terms. Also, the PCT is about half dirt now. It's actually faster when you don't have to keep loading and unloading your skis every couple hundred feet.

Thinking of heading up to Sonora Pass Sunday. Anybody seen how it's held up over these last warm days? How's the stream crossing where Blue Canyon meets 108? Any recent observations greatly appreciated.

This is a long shot, but did anyone come across an OR Bivy at the Sonora pass top parking area in the past few weeks? I left it out in the sun to dry, and completely lost track of it. Thought a friend may have had it but it turns out they didnt. This was about 4 weeks ago.

Someone has it. There is a 'found bivy sack' note nailed to a tree up there with a phone number on it. The tree is adjacent to the parking spot just west of the pass, eastbound. Now you need someone to get the number (and hope the storm doesn't blow it away). Good luck!

a great lap up and down Sonora Ridge today - snow was surprisingly smooth and good at 1100am - I didn't see anyone else

I'm probably going back up tomorrow - I'll look for the note

on a related note, anyone lose some gloves at the eastbound parking area at the pass on the south side of the road? I found 2 pair in the hanging in a tree

back from another couple of days skiing at SP - I'd been considering going south to Tioga, and was convinced by a PCT hiker who'd had some shipping chaos and needed to get to Yosemite Valley to pick up 2 drops - he filled up my tank and bought me dinner at the MoMart, so all I really lost was time - a conversation with some S. Yosemite Mtn Guides at MoMart who said they slogged into and out of Conness convinced me to head back north to Travertine HS and back to Sonora Pass

the coverage and skiing were excellent - I skied the east side of NoName then climbed back out over the ridge into the main bowl both day - solo Sunday, and with my newbie gaper buddy on Monday - he had fun

Debating a Sonora day on the 24th. Can you still ski down to the river/hair pin? Thinking about the Y, one of the middle shots, then over to deadmans.

you can ski most of the way to the hairpin - maybe a bit of walking before the creek crossing, but not much - thinking about the same thing Sunday

Me'n Vets hit up some lines behind the Marine Mountain Warfare Training Camp on Wednesday the 13th and it was windejo to the max. I actually wore my helmet for our whole endeavor (3 different patches) and even an extra jacket. The wind never really let up from noon until 6.

I hiked out thataway today - decided not to ski Leavitt solo - skied a couple laps off the east side of the PCT, then back out to Sonora Ridge

had a bit of a scary moment when I got strafed by rockfall - managed to avoid most of it, but got knocked off my feet by a soccer ball sized rock that hit my uphill boot and took me out - rock v plastic, so no damage done, except maybe for the poopstain in my pants

Yep. That's still my plan. Leavitt and Deadman are my goals bit if too burned out low maybe just a lap or two on Leavitt and walk back. Any beta on whether Deadman chute is a go?
