Sunday soft and sunny groomer laps w friends and fewer crowds than expected. Guess everyone else went north.

Decided to check out Windham w one kid for quick trip hoping it wasn’t far enough north to find crowds, generally worked out, other than the horrid drive home on I87 South. They had guns blazing on a few trails making for softest manmade I’ve skied in a while.

damn, that's some PA pow...what hill?
i used to ski at a few places in PA in high school...

Bear Creek is my tiny local spot pictured. Pretty close to home w a great youth dev and racing program that has done wonders for my kids skiing. Also have a pretty good crew of skiers whose kids are in the program that definitely helps the sanity.

i used to ski at shawnee, big bear, maybe camelback (it's been a while!) yes, sanity: good!

Really cool to be able to see all the way to Mt. Washington from Mt. Mansfield today.

I was Captain Ahab today hunting white whales at Magique today. So great.

Talked to Jeff with a G in the bar afterward and he said they weren't going to mow them down until tomorrow night. If you can get here tomorrow, do it. So good.

I'll be out early...have to leave at 11:30.

Sad news out of Stowe, sounds like a tree collision accident to me.

My brother (literally) is in residence at Jay this week, and has sent these reports.

Yesterday:

Well, just to provide the real Jay Peak snow report: No three feet of snow in the village but I guess the mountain might have gotten that except that it was on top of a pretty meagre base. It was snowing today and cold. The freshie still on the sides (8-10") was very light and fluffy but the groomers were showing some slick spots. After a few runs with S, who reported some nice turns on Deer Run (better than Interstate or Queens Hwy), I was feeling adventurous so went up the Flyer. After my buddy on the lift reported that Beaver Pond was skied-out, I decided on the old standby of River Kwai or Powerline. On my way towards the top of the Bonnie I figured Powerline -- oops 601 to Mickey -- was a better bet. Packed snow with lots of rock and scrapey moguls. Hard work but in the end the masochist in me enjoyed it. But I am glad I was alone because there were many breaks! Mickey was a 5 out of 10. Anyhoo, it was nice to see the mountain finally 99.9% open (mid Northwest passage closed).

Tomorrow I will venture off-piste and provide a glade report.

The second installment, as promised:

Bluebird day at Jay today with sunshine and temps above zero. Hit Beaver Pond this morning as promised and it was bumps in the trees with the moguls having a scrapey downside and powder on the other. Another challenge! Andre's was better and managed a few proper turns in a bit of powder from time to time. Ullr's was pretty good except for the pitch which was a cluster---- of people who weren't too familiar with HARD surface skiing. Met up with S again who reported good conditions on Village Chair and again her favourite Deer Run, and then I went to Stateside.

Timbuktu into Corona thinking there might be more snow. Pretty good but again skied-out overall and you had to be on your guard for the occasional icy patch. Derrick after that which was slick and fun. Montrealer to home. It is Presidents Week with half the state of Massachussetts here because the schools have the week off.

Going to live it up and have a drink at the Black Lantern!

Few trails have some decent pitch and interesting terrain, but it doesn't last long. Maybe 200' of that pitch then mostly flat run-outs. Scratches the itch though.

definitely sad news out of Stowe and big ups to the rescue team that responded to the scene.

heading up to SoVT with the fam this weekend; Okemo Friday, Bromley Saturday, K-Mart Sunday. Last little stretch of east coast skiing for a bit; heading out west for a big road trip starting Monday.

Couple days in the Upstates with the fam; then out to Montana, BC, Washington, Oregon, Cali, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico - lotta skiing lined up, we'll see if my body keeps up with the travel and shredding. Since I'm leaving New England it'll probably snow a shitload here in March.

The forecast is discouraging. At least it will be sunny this weekend.

It’s heartening to see that lift carrying passengers. Congrats to the Magic locals.

It’s pretty comical how small Red feels after a few laps on this thing.

I have to say it feels pretty right. Same speed. 136 chairs. 19 towers.

^ in today's Alpine Update, Jeff with a G said it's an 11 minute ride. When I was riding Red on Wednesday and they were running it empty, I definitely saw black chairs zooming past me. Can definitely go faster but I doubt they will run it at full speed with beginners X 4 trying to onload and offload. Could be Warren Miller material.

^^ shouldn't the beginners really be riding the *green*?
in any case glad the chair is finally online!
