The picture of sliced steak is still showing up for this thread. Which keeps making me think it’s the NSFW thread.

I went to Costco yesterday and for the first time someone asked to see my membership card when I went through the self-checkout.
Correct. You've always needed to scan your card. Now they also seem to be requiring an actual employee to look at it.
And this is probably a more Washington state specific thing, but they are also now scanning your driver's license if you buy alcohol. They used to just come over and enter some arbitrary birth date if it was obvious you were way over 21. When I was in California a couple months ago I learned you're not even allowed to buy alcohol in the self-checkout lanes by law.
I was in Alberta and the booze is thru a seperate set of doors from outside the building and you don't need to show a card
Apparently Costco is cracking down on membership sharing lately, similar to Netflix
Will that lower membership costs? Or at least slow down the rise? Somehow I doubt it.
30 years ago Costco gave me shit when I used someone elses membership. I was getting water and other stuff for a race my running club organized. The owner of the running store we partnered with gave me her membership card and a blank check she signed. I got in the door no problem, but the cashier gave me shit when she saw I wasn't the member. I had a couple flat carts loaded and told her, "I'm just the pick-up person. The member is paying. See here is her check. I don't think you want me to just walk out and leave all this water in the checkout line." The cashier relented and said she would allow this ONE time.
Not Costco but at Grocery Outlet in Idaho scanned my license when buying alcohol/wine. I bought a case for a party and each bottle had to be scanned separately, I still received the case discount but when I asked the clerk why she explained that each bottle was now "tagged" to my license and if for some reason a bottle of wine was found in possession of someone under age I would be getting a call. Not sure if it was BS or not.
Was it Boones Farm? Cause otherwise I doubt you would be handing out bottles of Pinot Noir to a bunch of high school student but I guess ya never know.
I don't know which is dumber, the state stating that or the clerk repeating the statement. The possibility of most states being able to manage that much data even if they had the software would be virtually zero.
In Utah, I have my ID in wallet backwards. They just scan it to get DOB and do not verify photo.
Fresh signs all over saying they need to check the card in addition to scanning. There was a lady bouncing at self checkout. I flashed the back of my pictureless Costco Visa and she waved me through. Probably a matter of time before I need to fix that, though.
I blame Utah. Sharing memberships and subscriptions was way more prevalent there than anywhere else I’ve lived. It was like a shameless point of pride.
Shrug. I like that they check the photo on my credit card and verify that I'm me. Especially since so much has gone to tap to pay without signatures.
And is it really sharing a membership if you're wife #6 and it's your turn to do the grocery run? They're all in the same household.
In the US, different states have laws about whether you can have a “membership” arrangement for alcohol sales. In those states you don’t have to be a member to buy booze from Costco and can just go in through the out door.
“You're in luck if you reside in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Texas, or Vermont. “
I mean, I don’t really care, and we sort of unintentionally share streamer subs among my family. It was just so out in the open there. Staff meetings where department directors were comparing notes with interns and everyone in between. 🤣
Also don’t mind my card being checked, I just don’t want to deal with taking a pic and getting new cards.
