The wind finally let up today. Got a late start but made it to Thumb Rock for a 5 mile run. Great skiing on the south side with a stormy weekend ahead. We’re holding on in the so. Cascades

Anyone been up there today/yesterday? Are we dealing with sticky mank at this point or has the corn cycle kicked in action already? Contemplating a trip up to Shasta (maybe tack on Lassen) this weekend but the forecasted winds and questionable snow conditions are giving me some pause. Alternative would be joining the hordes at Sonora pass opening which has warmer temps but is north facing, so again could be in the awkward phase between powder and corn.
So, how long do you have to hike dirt from Bunny Flat to the snow? Not looking too good for a June 9th splitboard trip
Hi Tex!
As of Monday, you walk to horse camp all on foot and can skin from there. by the time most folks read this, you'll walk on that side to almost 9000 ft, I'd guess. The side towards Green Butte has much better coverage and many folks were skiing pretty low still. It's going really fast. Really smooth corn right now, especially off of Casaval.
Brewer is closed due to a wash out. you can't even turn off on pilgrim creek road. Talked to a local guy and he wasn't sure it would even open at all this year in time for skiing, but call the rangers to get the latest.
In other news, Mcloughlin is in prime shape. Outstandingly smooth corn from top to bottom on the s avy gully. I might post pics in the OR thread in a few days.
Shame about brewer creek that's the best side too
Rangers gave an update after I posted:

"Brewer Creek: 2.8 miles to trailhead. Small snow patch, perhaps could bust with 4x4. The washout lower down on the 42N02 road is passable by 4x4, but we scraped the oil pan on our RAM pickup, so at your own risk. Military Pass is open, but 4x4 recommended."
some pics from Monday 5/16. Clouds came in, but still great skiing off of Casaval. North side lookin' icy up high:)

The ranger at the Lassen SW entrance said that the road from Manzanita Lake to the Devastated Area will open tomorrow. The road from the SW is still closed at the visitors center and will not open tomorrow but is plowed to the Peak parking area and open to bicycles.
Can confirm (to my dismay) that the East face of Lassen didn't soften at all yesterday by 12:30.
Winds and temps kept everything really firm on a sunny day -> should be good reset for the corn cycle.
Lassen was $$$ on Saturday, 5/21. No wind and no suncups. About a 20 minute walk to skinning from the Devastation parking lot.
Beautiful! Can you camp there yet? Thanks for the info!
Technically, no "camping" at the Devastation parking area or anywhere along the immediate north or east side of the road/Hyw 89 throughout the park. Uncertain what regs apply to the Van-life/back of the truck bro's, if any.
Couple photos should confirm all you need to know conditions-wise.
Something about a nice telemark turn amongst volcanic landscapes...

Lassen from last Sunday. First pic taken from Cinder Cone later that day. Skiing was excellent - firm, chalky winter snow, with patches of overnight graupel about 3 inches deep. About 30 minutes to snow, but we booted the whole way. Firm consistent nevé for your cramponing pleasure.

New snow that fell on November 1st has blanketed the bare ground of our forecast area with 2-6 inches of juicy, fresh, white, wonderful....SNOW! Will it melt out before winter commences in full...or, is this the beginning layers of our snowpack? We hope the latter. More snow is on the way this weekend. Be patient. Don't blow a hole through your p-tex or patella on that shallow buried rock.
The Mount Shasta Avalanche Center is kicking things into gear and will begin issuing daily avalanche forecasts on December 1st. Until then, expect weekly updates and observations to post as warranted. We are in pre-season start-up mode, training up new staff, going over our systems -- check, check, double-check.
We have another stellar winter line-up of avalanche center fundraisers and events. Direct your daily scroll to our events page for all the latest.
Climbing information can still be found in the overall climbing conditions report and observations page for various routes. If you are out and about, submit your observations.
