You also have to remember that their hunting and tactical lines are going to differ. I have leupolds on my hunting rifles and they are still considered the best value in hunting optics by most hunters and I've never had a problem and have sold some used ones with almost no depreciation. But the military is always going to be rougher on stuff and I've heard other places that the QC on their tactical line has started to suffer.

Even if you spent every week at the range and 20-30 days afield each fall you can't duplicate the wear and tear that training and tours through Iraq or Afghanistan produce.

That isn't even the problem. This is stuff straight out of the box that fails. I am talking about tactical stuff, so don't know if any of their hunting stuff has had problems.

That sucks. I've never heard of that in their hunting stuff but had heard rumors of QC slipping, particularly with their tactical stuff.

I shot another 80 rounds through the gun over labor day weekend. It shoots FMJ's perfectly, cycles them flawlessly. Any soft point I try to put through fails to feed.

I picked up a new 19 round DPMS mag, which was what I was shooting with on labor day. I was hoping the new mag would solve my problems (I hadn't smoothed it out.).

I ran two boxes of the German DAG FMJ's and they all worked well. I ran a box of Wolf brass soft points and I had to rack the handle after every shot, bang, click, it failed to feed every round. I ran a box of the steel Bear FMJ's with only one failure to fire, dimpled primer. I ran a box of steel Bear soft points and same thing, failure to feed.

Last night I dremeled the crap out of both of my mags, hopefully this fixes the problem. I've read the C Products mags work well in this platform, I may pick up a few of them (They're cheap!). I'm still somewhat disappointed in the fact I spent what I thought was a lot of money on a rifle that seems to be somewhat finicky. (I've since started reading some other forums and have realized what NICE AR's are and cost.) Of course my wife would've never let me get an LMT, OBR, or KAC.

Regardless, I hope my mag smoothing will work out this weekend. I'm headed out to the West Desert and plan on putting a couple hundred rounds through it. I may even work up a rest and see what kind of groups it will shoot. I bequeathed my Marlin .22 semi to my boy, he's looking forward to shooting it as well.

Hopefully I can catch some pics of jugs exploding, we'll see...

The closest I've come to shooting soft-points in my AR-10 were Nosler Ballistic Tips and Hornady A-Max, both of which did fine as far as feeding. Never shot an actual lead soft point - I've been shooting SMK's for the past year or so (they group about half the size of anything else I've tried). When I used to get failures I'd end up with a cartridge with a large dent in the shoulder. Is the cartridge actually getting jammed or is the bolt not completely cycling?

Although I've heard bad things about C Products mags, I have absolutely no experience with them. Hopefully the failure thing is just a matter of getting a few hundred rounds though the rifle. You can always send it in to the factory, but that is a pain in the ass.



Shot at an IHMSA matsch last weekend and discovered how to hold the Creedmore position the correct way. Shooting steel is rad.

Do you guys have any idea what I should ask for a 1st or 2nd gen (no tac rails for the light) glock 17? Three 17 round mags and cheap nylon holster included.

Shot another 100 rounds through it this weekend. The polishing seemed to help a little bit. The only ammo I had difficulty with was that steel crap I bought earlier, it wouldn't cycle or hold the bolt open after the last round. The German DAG stuff once again shot like a dream.

I didn't bust out any targets but we had a hell of a good time shooting water jugs, clays and cans. Next time we camp out in the West desert I'm going to bring a coyote call, they were all around us but we couldn't get them in close enough.

There's a Tikka 595 chambered in .308 on Gunbroker right now with less than a day left. For the past year I've been telling myself that if I ever see another Tikka 595 in good shape I buy it. Gunbroker rifle has the national match stock and is (according to the seller) 95%. Right now it's at $870 no reserve. I've never bought a gun over the internet because there's no way of actually checking it out before hand. And I really don't need another .308. But I love these rifles. And $870 is not a bad price. And Tikka doesn't make them anymore. And they are very few and far between.

Jer, I bought a sporterized 1903 Rock Island Arsenal 30-06 and a Browning 1885 falling block in 7mm mag from gunbroker. I was pleased with both purchases. It is just like ebay but for guns.

Do it. If you can get it for under $1k, its a steal.

Question of course is how many rounds down the pipe, and what does the bolt face look like.

Ask if you can get a 3 day inspection. Most reputable people offer this.

Anyone have any suggestions for a CCW class in Colorado? I am going to get this for my wife for her Birthday. I have a few names already, but would like some opinions if there are any out there. My only requirement is that it include range time, as well as class time.

Anyone ever buy from the auctions on Proxibid? The auctions are actually held by different companies but Proxibid...well the name says it all. I want to pick up a Mauser 98 and am exploring my options.

You can never have enough guns, they seem to retain value, it would be a good deal. How can you go wrong?

Close enough would've been around 20-30 yards. It was dark when they manifested themselves. (I'm fixing on changing tactics this weekend.)

The boys shot over 600 rounds of .22 shells. I was quite proud of my boy, it took him all day but he worked up the courage to shoot my 20 gauge and my .308. That .308 is heavy and packs quite a punch to a 13 year old kid.

A buddy of mine came out that weekend, (that's his dark haired kid in the pics.) he brought a .17 hmr lever action rifle, a Ruger .22 pistol, a .357 mag wheel gun, a bolt .243, a bolt .270, a .22 marlin, and a bolt .300 win mag. It was quite a fun day of shooting.

After shooting most of those I'm thinking of getting the boy a .243 for the deer hunt next season. It seems a great cartridge for deer sized game on down. It's light and should be easy for a 14 year old to carry around in the field. (bolt gun of course)

fired some 1400 fps .357 mag through my 6" 686p yesterday. What a wallop. Love that gun.

I'm beginning to have thoughts of acquiring a pistol. I've been wavering between getting a .22lr such as a Ruger Mark 3 or going all in and getting a 1911.

I like the .22 for the sheer cheapness and fun of shooting. A 1911 would be more for home defense and also some plinking fun. I figured I'd need to spend at least $700 for a 1911 versus $250ish for a Mark 3.

Then I started reading about Rock Island Armory, they have a 1911 for right around $400. Although I'm sure they're crafted in sweatshops in the Philippines, from what I've read they seem to be a decent piece and fairly reliable.

Anyone have any experience? Or other suggestions to a different variant of a .45 acp around that price point?

You could get the 1911, and then get a .22 conversion like the Ciener. It allows you to shoot .22s in your .45. Or you could get two guns for about the same price.

Can "plinking" ever be used to describe shooting anything .45 ?? :)

Bob, if you have any interest in a glock I have a full size 9mm I'd unload for cheap, 3 glocks is enough. Look at Springfields for 1911's.

edit: sorry, springfield is not in that price point and I have no experience with RIA.
