Atta boy!
Little Switz tonight. Seven inches have fallen since ten am but it’s nowhere to be found. Six bus loads of middle schoolers got here at four and tore it up like it was a scarecrow and they the flying monkeys. We’re still having fun.
I made so many laps on that damn tow rope in my youth
Just bought a couple pair of rope protectors last week for the kids. They were smoking through a couple pairs of leather choppers during a single season - and they're good about speed matching the rope too.... I can't get my younger one hardly out of the park this year - he spent a straight 4 hours last night on the rope at Wild.....
I really need to remember to take more pictures - help keep Harry alive during his sabattical. I feel like I've just spent the last three weeks slipping race courses, so I never think about it. Thing 1 had his first high school race on Tuesday though, 44th out of about 90ish boys in the varsity race - not too bad for an eighth grader. The extra gate time more than once a week is already cleaning up his course skiing - so I think he'll move up the list over the next 4 races. About the only thing I've got some pics of, but my phone didn't like the lighting, so the vid screenshot is a little blurred.

This needs some serious discussion.
Last year we did “Mag Takeover @Troll” on the same day as Demo Day. That worked well and I suggest that becomes an annual tradition. I have no idea what day that is this season, nothing is listed on their website.
I also like the idea of a Midwest Summit at Lutsen. Any day(s) work for me, as I am playing hooky for life. Preferably when I am healed up, but if not I will attend anyway. I just like being part of the ski scene.
Who is up for a Lutsen Summit ?

I am game. I like the idea of it taking place in March, but being a DUber (Dad Uber) for my daughter’s activities; my availability is all over the place.

Current roster for the Lutsen Summit:
1) mn_teleswede
2) Harry
3) skuff
Teleswede gets to set the dates(s) since this was his idea.

Edit: added skuff
Wheres the Mt. LaCrosse, Nordic (Mt. Morris) Mountain, Pine Mountain, MI love in this thread?
Thanks! No big deal, I just grew up skiing those places, as a matter of fact, the first place I "downhill" skied was at Nordic, attempted to ride the poma lift that used to go through the trees, but couldn't figure out how. Spent a lot of time at Pine Mountain in my friends' parents' Winnebago camper plugged in to the outlets in the parking lot and listening to my friends Dad complain about all the vagabonds skiing at Pine, then it was on to Mount LaCrosse for study breaks when I was in school there at UW.

bushman reappears after a multi year hiatus !
Next mystery; where is Bio Smear ? Wasn’t he living somewhere up north of Hibbing ?
We already had a Yooper sighting this season, all kinds of disappeared midwest maggots reappearing. Skiing is eternal.
HAPPY NEW YEAR !

they can practice their chainsaw safety.
fact.
Got out to Crystal Ridge (formerly the Rock, formerly the dump) for an hour before the Packer game. They do a good job with what they have.
Always nice to see a hill that’s getting better. Especially after New Year’s Day at Sundown, that places best days are long past.
COLD weekend here in MN. I'm fighting a bit of a something, so I opted out of skiing yesterday, and today isn't looking too great either. Selling some skis and gear though, which is good! Watching the greatest movie of all time though - POINT BREAK!!

UTAH! Get me TWO!!
I knew where this was in less than a second of seeing the pic. My head-- "Yup, that's where I grew up and learned to turn."
Never imagined then how much that training would aid to my ability to flow through JP forests 35 years later. Thanks for the nostalgia. Tell your kids my forests and your gates have more in common than they know. It's the same flow. I just don't shin gates anymore. lol. But the looking ahead, reading the line, reacting... all that nervous system training goes a long way.
I emailed Wild for a paper trail map that I could frame and mount on my wall in my office. They were like-- "We don't have paper trail maps anymore. You can download it, though."
I felt old.
I thought it would be a cool project to cover my wall in all of my "home mountains."
Also a funny anecdote-- There was a gorgeous blonde girl from Forest Lake HS that we used to race against. She was always decked out in Descente gear. We called her Descente girl. We all had a crush on her. And even today I have an affinity for the brand. Ha.
Also Reusch gloves. I see pics like this and suddenly get a waft of the smell of Reusch leather.
Does Wild still have the best fries in the known universe?
The fries are pretty solid when they don't undercook them, but the cheese curds are better imo.
Picked up some older minty FIS GS skis over the weekend for a song (~23m R ones) - fkna were those fun - been a while since I've been on full race-stock anything - surprisingly compliant to a bunch of different turn shapes but absolutely planted/stable through everything. Now, I'm thinking of getting a SL in the stable again.....
Something to be said about having a fully cambered ski still in the quiver. Took mine out for the first time in 2 years at Welch this past Sat. Fun times were had banging out high angle carves.

Yesterday my texts were blowing up from maggots at Welch Village. I can’t wait for my knee to heal up so I can ski with these idiots.
Today was fun at the “Epic & Classic” Welch. The new snow last night + wind depositing + flurries all afternoon= best conditions this month. Nice to see some new faces along with the usual suspects.Quote:

I still can’t ski, but it feels good to hang out with skiers.
Best event of the day was the table of Instagram influencers in leather ski pants who were striking poses with their selfie sticks. JFC.
Après-ski we hung out in the parking lot adjusting bindings for my eventual return to skiing. DIN is set real low.
Troll was not crowded at first.

Thanks for the weekend stoke! I was stuck inside at a swim meet the last few days, so it’s nice to see people out enjoying the snow.
Next weekend I’m headed to chestnut. It will be the first time on skis since tearing up my knee last winter. It’s feeling good so hopefully skiing is a success. If all goes well I will make a decision about heading north for the lutsen meetup. Has dates been set for that yet?
If anyone’s skiing chestnut next weekend hit me up I’ll be there. I would love to meet some more local Midwest mags.

Everybody who wants to attend the mini-summit at Lutsen send me a PM with your preferred dates.
So send me your PMs and I will see what everyone wants. I am super flexible.

Ah damn, I was down at Welch yesterday too (kids' races), but didn't ski since an $82 lift ticket is bananas when I'll be standing around most of the time waiting for their runs. About 25 of us took over the basement at King's for burgers after - love that place. They about choked when I told them how many we had coming but they got it done. Kids had a good time - got some racing in, got some park time, brought home some ribbons (1st and 3rd). The younger one that doesn't give two shits about racing of course won his age group..... Couple more practices Monday/Tuesday at Wild, then over to Troll on Thursday for a high school race. Likely be back at Troll on MLK if I can get the kids into the head-to-head slalom invite, if anyone wants to make some turns.

$82?!?!?
Man…glad Im a pass holder…
I have been up at the Nut so much lately, no time to post, even though I read this thread everyday. Unfortunately I have other ski plans this weekend (Park City>>>Crested Butte>>>Sundown race the following weekend). So I won't be up to Chestnut again till the following Tuesday. After that we have a break in races for a while and so I'll go back to being a weekend regular and will hopefully run into you or some other mags. Chestnut is skiing really, really well right now. The lastest snowmaking push has things in top shape, on winter snow. Hopefully the mini warm Thurs/Fri doesn't hurt it too much before the artic air returns, but it won't help.
This weekend was really cool for my daughter at the Chestnut WIJARA race (read please....this is not USSA...but with some good USSA racers in attendance). She came out of the gate strong and posted a time 2 seconds faster than the next nearest girl (all ages) on the first race of the morning combined GS run. After the second race her combined time was the 4th fastest on the hill - U14 -U20 Boys and Girls, 1st Girls U16, 1st girls U14-U20. Same story with the afternoon race, 3rd overall fastest time on the hill boys and girls, and .70 faster than the next fastest girl. About 200 ish racers on the big kids hill.
She showed glimpses of this kind of GS speed at the end of last year with an amazing result in one race, but she had a smooth reset course and was an early racer. This weekend she did it 4 times in a row on the longest steepest course on the circuit (once was a re-ride on a torn up course after the didn't get a time on her first afternoon run). Pretty cool. Being a ski dad who's identity has always been somewhat tied to skiing can be a very dangerous thing when you have children racing. I see it first hand in others and in myself, the good and the bad of a race dad or mom who never had their own shot at competing. Days like this Saturday, I just have to keep my head from exploding, but at the same time enjoy the moment and be proud of my daughter. It was really, really cool.
Sunday, as ski racing will always do, it was back down to earth for a 4th and a 5th in Slalom U16. This is a nice improvement for her year over year for the first race, U16 has the fastest girls this year, and her SL time held up against the pack nicely. She's working hard at figuring this slalom thing out. Time in gates.

Congrats to your daughter and to a supportive dad! Those are great pics. I love the first one with the shadows and the lifts in the background.
Have fun in park city. I found some fun stuff on the canyons side when I was there last season. Hopefully they will have some of it open by the time you get there.
Hopefully we can slide on snow together later in the season.

I’m also at Park City this weekend. I’m pretty familiar with the Canyons side. I'm hoping to show them around.
Hey ugly$- Congrats to your racer! Kicking ass and taking names
Safe travels, have fun out west
