Fore! Who's playing golf, yo-

Coal Creek is fuuuuuun. Played 14 then got pushed off by lightning but, through some little titch of awesomeness, recieved four rain checks for nine holes. Since the guys who played with us today won't be joining us on Friday, CC is going to let Guroo and I play 18; free golf is the best golf. Looking forward to getting back out there because 15-18 looks like some fun scoring opportunities and, even though I wasn't hitting the ball great, feel like I could have carded a respectable score; for me anyways.

Ended up shooting a 44 with 19 motherfucking putts and having to take a drop from a hazard. Three-FOUR-three putted one, two, and three. Needless to say, I was pissed (and a little embarrassed). Salvaged the front nine with three one-putts in the last four holes.

so i'm checking out used iron sets on ebay. i'm trying to find something comparable to what i'm playing here. -- cobra. i know they are steel shafts, but i haven't seen any marking as to reg or stiff flex. how much stiffer is stiff flex steel?

also, do the FP, CB, etc., denote something?

what is the purpose of oversized heads? a bigger sweet spot?

i've never purchased anything off ebay, so if anybody has any advice i'd appreciate it.

take a pic of the set and a close up of the label just below the grip on the shaft, and a close up of the back of one of the clubs. I'd bet we will have pretty good ID on them for you in minutes.

good idea, thanks. after commonlaw's comment a few pages back about not even picking up my old crappy no-name set when i get home, i'm committed to getting something better. i don't wsnt to get frustrated trying to make crappy flexy clubs work when i've finally developed a little consistency with something that isn't top of the line, but fundamentally better.

my old cobraII's just had an S in a weird little diamond pattern sticker, they were cobra-branded shafts made by TT probably - but that's pretty obvious, not sure what shafts they use now!?!

How much stiffer? Enough. Too stiff for your swing speed and your shots won't go as far and tend to slice. Get an R shaft.

FC, CB seem to denote head style for Cobra's.

Over sized = bigger sweet spot. I tried oversized and lost 10 yards per club so I had regular sized heads put on the shafts and was happy.

Buying off eBay? I haven't but I might if I knew exactly what I wanted. I've had a set of "new to me" irons twice in 30 years.

just judging from what i've seen on craigslist so far, ebay looks a lot cheaper, and with more selection. i'm not a gear junkie at all once i have something i'm happy with so i don't anticipate buying again any tme soon. plus, at my skill level, it would be stupid to buy something new or expensive.

All the major manufacturers will have similar offerings across their iron lines- blades (traditional), minimal cavity back (low handicap), bigger cavity or pocket cavity (higher handicap-me), or SGI, (super game improvement) which have hybrids in place of the long irons and larger faces and and even more perimeter weighting.
I like maximum pocket cavity for forgiveness, but they have to look blade-like at address. I cannot play an iron if I can see anything behind the top line.
I would say that at a minimum, you should know what your shaft flex should be (reg or stiff) and what your lie is. The pros at your club should be able to help you with this.
After that, you should go to a golf super store and see what iron fits your eye and by the comparable set on ebay.

Full disclosure, I play bogie golf and put it our there about 240-250 at sea level. I also don't go bigger than 5 feet when skiing.

oops. i forgot about the whole fitting thing again. i was thinking that everything i'm playing with here is standard and i'm able to adjust to it so i might be able to get away without getting fitted. although i am curious anyway.

i want to be a bogey golfer and 5 feet is pretty much my range while riding, too.

I got fitted for my last set. I'm 5'10. Size 9 ski glove. 33" inseam. The club fitter told me, "Just go take any club off the rack." Lucky I guess.

Struck the ball poorly but shot 80 yesterday. With a marginal round going I took a couple risks that cost me. two birdies though.. Putted well.

I have a knot in my back making me pretty sour overall.

I played so poorly yesterday I can't believe it. My 3 wood is my go to dead straight, 270 off the tee club. I bladed one, and popped one straight up with the tee pretty much all the way in the ground. Aside from the 5th hole, a par 5 that double dog legs, where I pured a driver, and hit a 3 wood right at the pin hugging a tree line, that unfortunately hit a blind bunker and just rolled out to the fringe, then hit a 30 ft putt dead online, leaving it 1 1/2 feet short, my favorite hole was the 14th where i pulled a 3 wood off the tee into the hazard, third shot hit a tree, 4th a bladed 3 wood to 80 yds, 5th a wedge to 15 feet and drained the putt. Then the lightning was striking all around us and we had to go in. It was scary as fuck.

Shot a 40 on the front with a double on 9. I think I hit 3 greens in regulation on the 14 holes. That 3 week break just murdered my game.

Here's mofo on the hardest hole, where he bladed his first off the tee, hit his second to 160, and proceeded to nearly knock in his third. Nice par kid.

Playing HMB Ocean Course today...heading back up to Truckee tomorrow for a lot of golf over the next two weeks.

Mrs. Cranked had a lesson with Keith @ Old Greenwood on Saturday...that guy is amazing. She is a different player after one lesson, amazing.

I only look like I have a slight case of Down Syndrome in that pic.

Yeah, my third shot into that green was on point. Starting to get a couple of those a round. I was VERY pleased with my bump and runs as well.

You make the tee time for Friday or should I give them a call?

I think you are talking about tempo, you want a smooth, controllable tempo which looks like a slower swing, but your clubhead speed actually increases when you make the proper sequenced movements.

anyway, the lightweight shaft *could* help with this - see the new TM drivers for an example of faster clubhead speeds due to lighter weight overall.

you don't have to swing as hard to get the same or greater CH speed.

Be *very* careful buying golf clubs on E-Bay. It's like mecca for Chinese knock off clubs that are total crap.

I was going to say this too. There's a difference between swinging fast and swinging too hard.

other clubs i'm using:

callaway 15* hybrid; shaft: graphite, s flex, 65g, torque 3.4, kickpt low, tip 350.

taylormade r5 dual, 9.5, head type d, flex s, MAS ^2, 5.55, mid torque, tip soft.

i was swinging way too hard. not allowing my hips to lead shoulders to lead arms. basically muscling it with arms and breaking the wrists (=casting?)
