Apparently I'm wrong about support for Ukraine. 69% of Americans want military support for Ukraine - per Gallop March 18, 46% want more American military support to Ukraine, 23% want to keep present levels, and only 30% want to decrease aid. Though in the details, it says Republicans feel differently, they don't support Ukraine, and Republicans run the government at the moment.

An interesting, and lengthy, article published a couple of days ago goes a long way to answer the big mystery about the Kursk offensive, what the fuck the fucking objective actually was.</p>

Released by "Lovely Lad" on Substack, it explains that the assault into Kursk was envisioned as the first part of a pincers movement to encircle and eliminate the Russian forces clustered around Kharkiv:</p>

"The Ukrainians hoped to breach the border defenses and then advance all the way to the R200 highway where they would rendezvous with a brigade sized formation from Hlukhiv. After that the 2nd pha/se would begin where the Ukrainian force would push into Belgorod oblast with the assumed Phase line being the Psel river, where a new supply route would be opened by a force crossing the border around Grayvoron and then rendezvousing with the main force. From there the Ukrainians would “destroy a large amount of Russian forces” and then cross back into Ukraine. The Ukrainians failed to reach phase 1 which warranted a change in the entire objectives of the operation into an operation to hold ground."</p>

This article details a series of set-piece battles aimed to quickly achieve initial objectives that ultimately bogged down by deteriorating communications and exposed flanks. I'm fascinated that Ukraine would attempt an ambitious plan like this, and moreso that the operation was changed on the fly to simply hold ground, remaining for seven months and withstanding four separate Russian counterattacks before finally withdrawing.</p>

A lot of us believed that the operation was political, perhaps a plan to acquire a "bargaining chip" to use when negotiating future territorial concessions, whereas in reality it appears that the intent was to inflict a severe ass-rape to Russia's Northern Military Group and either stabilize Kharkiv or fuck with Putin's stability.</p>

Why is Ukraine releasing drone footage of murdering unarmed conscripts who have given up?
First of all. It’s a waste of a drone. Secondly, it’s a first rate war crime.
The future is obviously drones, it’s quite amazing to see changes in tech and warfar in real time, like the airplane in ww1.
But it’s also opening a new door of war crimes.
It’s because Ukrainians and Russians harbor nothing but hate each other now. Of course they were never really friends before, but their war has been going since 2014 and since 2022 has become the worst conflict of the 21st century.
So many have died on both sides sides at this point, that we are now seeing these kinds of videos. Definitely a misstep by Ukraine in the moral high ground game, but it’s just more evidence of how war coarsens society and creates long-lasting damage between peoples.
Nothing like a war to bring back old memories and energize longstanding hatred’s between peoples.

Cono has brought up this misinformed talking point several times already in this thread because he consumes pro-Putin media. It's not a war crime because an enemy combatant cannot surrender to an aircraft except under certain limited circumstances. Think about it. If a soldier can simply temporarily lay down his weapon and feign surrender until the drone flies away or its battery dies then that soldier has not actually surrendered.
The only time it is legally effective for an individual to offer surrender is when it is feasible for Ukraine to reasonably accept that surrender. Otherwise, if the soldier is behind enemy lines, for example, then it's not reasonable to expect that aircrews are capable of taking them into custody.
From a legal standpoint, surrender of ground forces under Geneva Convention means taking control of the enemy. A drone cannot take control of a soldier. In contrast, there are many, many videos of Russians summarily executing Ukrainians who are in custody. Russians line up captured unarmed Ukrainians and then mow them down with automatic weapons. That's an actual war crime, not Cono's propagandized war crime in the post above
