Actually, lots of things. It's really not that special. When I was in college I worked as a programmer in one of the departments in the medical school. Lots of freezers. Lots of things degrade over time if not frozen. It could be as simple as a freshman lab does the same experiment every year and they want the kids to do it from the same stock.
